The new Exorcist is supposed to be the start of a new trilogy and is also by the same people who did the recent Halloween trilogy.

I watched two movies today based on recommendation.

A Quiet Place, 2018 - Has somewhat silly moments, but can be quite tense. Doesn't overstay it's welcome, worth a watch if you have nothing better lined up. 7/10

Gerald's Game, 2017 - A somewhat creepy start quickly spirals into boring nonsense. A retarded ending is the cherry on this shit sundae. 2/10
 
I've seen ads for this movie and I have a couple of thoughts.


First off, having a tail end of summer release shows that the studio has no faith in it. Second, while it's a good premise for a horror movie, those who are familiar with the original novel know how it ends: the whole crew dies. But given how many books, movies, and TV shows featuring Dracula have deviated from the source material, I won't be surprised if the black and female character survive. There may also be a final scene of them meeting Van Helsing to tease a sequel that will never be made.

imo Jonathan Harker at the castle and the Demeter voyage are the most memorable parts of the novel and a lot of adaptations either sharply truncate or omit them. (Nosferatu gives both their due.) Renfield was pretty cool. What's the last decent movie or tv show that actually had "Dracula" in the title? Feels like that's been a touch of death for a while.

It's a decent premise for a Dracula movie and I like the look of the vampire here. But, like you said, we all know how this story ends. It did weirdly give me Alien 3 vibes -especially with the dog- so I think it could have worked had they loaded the film with more red shirts just to up the body count.
 
The 2020 Dracula TV series was actually not that bad. Actually I'm pretty sure one of the episodes was the voyage of the Demeter. It's only somewhat pozzed, with the annoying nigger woman only showing up in the last episode, and having much less of an impact than I expected (and Van Helsing turned into a woman, but the alternative would be super gay, so I'm actually ok with this...if they remade it now, Van Helsing would be a man, and it would be much much worse). Honestly, I don't remember too much about it, except that I was less annoyed than expected. So if "decent" is the bar we're going for, then 3 years. It's been 3 years since a decent TV show had Dracula in the title.

All I can say is that Universal and Blum will pull the plug on any future sequels in wake of the writers and actors strikes.

I'm still waiting for the boomer @Internet War Criminal to deliver his boomer-tier response with reaction memes of yesteryear but I suppose he's still catching on all the threads he missed in Beauty Parlor. 🙄

Also, Subspecies 5 popped up on Tubi. It sucks. The production values are slightly higher than modern Full Moon movies but that's not saying much. The Subspecies franchise ended with part 3 as far as I and the dozens of fans are concerned.

I just saw Color out of Space (2020), and it was a really great movie. I hope they do more nice Lovecraft adaptations in film. Nicholas Cage definitely stole the show for this one.
 
I hated it. And I mostly liked the director's other two films. Hardware was "okay" and Dust Devil was "pretty good" albeit overhyped as some kind of mastepiece which I didn't think it was. Color Out Of Space had everything going for it but missed the mark. It's even funnier that the director got #metoo'd later and that put the kibosh on his comeback. The director is an interesting dude and was Dario Argento's weed dealer whenever Argento came out to England/America for film festivals.

Honestly, the worst thing I can say about it is the ending and it was very disappointing. Still, it's a fun horror movie I personally loved and was one of the best movies of that year (aside from either I'm Thinking of Ending Things, The Gentlemen or SANIC).

The funniest thing about that movie was that Severin Films put out a cassette tape of Richard Stanley reading the story and then denounced and deleted it once he got metoo'd despite releasing Alejandro Jodorowsky, Roman Polanski and Franco Prosperi films.
