Won some tickets to an early screening of Evil Dead Rise, so I'll say if its shit or not when the movie starts in a week. If its the former, I hope its still good entertainment ala Demons/Demons 2. I can post spoilers here afterwards, I think.
Just saw it. Its no Evil Dead 1 or Evil Dead 2013. Its brutal, just not savage enough to be on par with them. Yes,
the kids do die via woodchipper. Its obvious the lady playing as Mom deadite was really having fun with her role. The cheesegrater scene was overhyped, I wish they explored more on the kitchen deadite (nigga just wants to eat), and this movie is one of the rare cases where the child actors weren't annoying. The short runtime also adds to the movie, so it introduces its characters for 10 mins then starts. Absolutely useless opening kill. Absolutely useless setting.
There are multiple deadites but only the main ones are the Mom and kids. The rest just kind of stand there in a hallway. So no balls-to-the-walls crazy like Demons.
Tree rape scene
changed to elevator wires wrapping the limbs of Mom. There's no rape here, they broke her bones instead.
Dialogue sucks: "I'm not a groupie!" and "I'm finally free of you titty-suckers!". Though there are some good ones like "Open the door like you open your legs!"
There are no memorable kills, and probably two things that will be talked about.
The Mom chewing a dude's eye out and spitting it in some other guy's mouth, making him choke to death. This one felt like Loony Toons gag from how the whole scene is shot. and (third act spoilers) the
Maruder deadite, deadite kids fused to Mom so its basically a blob of limbs and three heads poking out. Probably might be followed up when they were screaming in agony and for Mom when they got thrown into a woodchipper.
Ash
does not show up in person but he's a voice in the tapes. "You idiot! That's why its called Book of the Dead!" No aftercredits scene.
The ending is interesting,
MC forgot to actually kill the deadites for real, so they're free to infect people outside of the high rise and into the world.
Tldr: it's a good action horror movie but just not as a Evil Dead movie. If you're watching it as a ED movie, you will be heavily dissappointed. You can ask for spoilers if I missed anything.
If I had to put in a scale, very easily the weakest of the series.

MC was pregnant, and one of the book's pages showed a deadite baby bursting off of a woman's stomach. It never happened, but it did get a scene where "Mom" deadite went "I'll swallow your soul! .....Two souls?" and tried to literally claw MC's womb out before getting scissors up the nose. the same page also shows up in the credits, so it definitely felt like something got cut.
