Inspired by @Kujo Jotaro I've started the Saw movies again and... holy shit I forgot how hard the series goes at it, sometimes. 3 in particular, with the foot and the first victim. Holy shit I had forgotten all about that shit, and I legit squirmed twice. Takes a fucking lot for me to react that way anymore.
The dude in the crucifix esque trap towards the end of 3 really got me. I'd thought I was pretty desensitized having seen a fair share of gore from lurking pol years ago, I was wrong.

The Outwaters. It's on Amazon video right now. I waited for a theatrical release but it was playing nowhere near me so I grabbed an online copy. It's definitely long in the tooth. Editing this down would greatly streamline the whole thing. It's basically a Paranormal Activity style movie that goes apeshit in the 3rd act. Just like those shitty Paranormal Activity movies there's a LOT OF ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING HAPPENING. The entire 1st act - 25 minutes- could have been almost completely cut out. There's a lot of meandering and nothing until our main characters get to the desert. It does the Blair Witch thing too by claiming this is recovered footage.

Here's my advice: don't watch it in theaters, watch it online or download it, after the opening scene just skip right to the 25 minute mark. You don't miss a god damn thing. A fan-edit would be pointless because you just need to cut a good 20+ minute portion from the movie in one massive chunk and you're done.

Once the 2nd act begins it starts to get really good.

So do I recommend it? Yes but with an * to remind you to skip to 25 minutes in.

Some time ago I recommended the faux-documentary film Horror in the High Desert, which plays like, to quote one source, a really spooky episode of '48 Hours'. It was all about what happened to Gary Hinge, a hiker who went missing after setting off into the wilds of Nevada. Through interviews with friends and relatives, we learn that Hinge was a young man was obsessed with survivalism and had a popular hiking blog and uploaded videos of his exploits.

Since he didn't tell anyone where he was headed, the search for him by the authorities and the private investigator hired by his sister slammed into a wall. Then police find his truck with unidentifiable bare footprints alongside it, which was odd since he didn't drive to the places he hiked. But then his backpack surfaces, and so does a mysterious video.

The faux documentary style works, the low key acting, it's not so much a "slow burn" as it is the mystery and the unease being built up oveer what happened to this almost painfully earnest fellow to the found footage finale that's one of the more sadistic and unsettling stretches of film I'd seen in awhile.

Now, I see a trailer for the sequel has been announced for Monday.

I remember how disturbing the found footage clip was since the whole movie never gave an explanation of what was the cabin or who that deformed being was. I won't be surprised if the sequel takes away that mystery by giving a whole backstory.

I enjoyed this movie. I thought the woman playing the sister did a damned good job portraying her as sad, frustrated, and out of her depth.

Freeway 2 is getting a 4k blu ray, turns out the first also got a 4K Blu Ray last year

4k Blu Ray is doing good when it comes to horror, however it's mostly the smaller labels doing.

In other news, turns out Scream 6 has 3d showings

Guess they thought Avatar 2 would bring 3d back, which did over $1 billion from 3d tickets but doubt it's a sign 3d is back for other movies.

I finally watched Midsomner, whatever, gay name. Well, I put it off because its that new wave of ikea horror. Full of middle class aspirational symbolism, slow burners, dabbling into some vague allusion to a political or social struggle (not always, but it does happen), so the thought of watching another of these was a real turn off for me.

It was ok, like so many of its class. Few good ideas, still shooting everything like it was an advert for House of Fraiser. I did get a giggle with the relentless use of slow shots and slow motion turns, with a deep, low key on a bog standard synth pad preset on a VSTi that they fucking use to death. Please stop doing that. Please, I beg of you, I want the theme songs back!. They never even mix it up with some melody that can hint at a theme, nope, hit those fucking VSTi presets up for more low notes. Pads only baby, we only use those round these parts.

Critters is better than any A24 movie, and that's a fact.

I've been rewatching the Wrong Turn movies recently and this guy has really grown on me. He needs more screen time.

Wrong Turn 2 is a fucking treasure. I know I say it a lot, but Henry Rollins is always a treat and some of the gore in 2 is supreme. There's also a lot of good humor in two.
Unrelated, but Silent Rob, a personal cow of mine has some hot takes on the movie cocaine bear, he says he's gonna try to veer away from the "Silent Rob" persona.
