A book that once belonged to Adolf Hitler — and sheds light on the Nazis' plans for North America had the Second World War gone the other way — is now in the collection of Library and Archives Canada (LAC).

The book, entitled Statistik, Presse und Organisationen des Judentums in den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada (Statistics, Press, and Organizations of Jewry in the United States and Canada), is a detailed census of Jewish populations and organizations in North American cities.

"This information would have been the building blocks to rolling out the Final Solution in Canada," said LAC curator Michael Kent.

Major urban centres including Montreal and Toronto are on the list, but so are smaller communities such as Trois-Rivières, Que., which at the time had a Jewish population of just 52, according to the book.

The 137-page book was commissioned by the Nazis and was written by Heinz Kloss, a researcher who worked for organizations that supported the Third Reich.

Kloss was a linguist who lived in the United States in 1936-37, just prior to the war. He likely compiled the information through his connections with Nazi sympathizers and other researchers in North America.

"[Kloss] had a very good network and relationship with researchers around the world," Kent said.

"He's probably compiling from a range of secondary sources that he's getting from his contacts in North America," Kent said.

The book was published in 1944 and was likely stored in Hitler's alpine retreat near Berchtesgaden, Germany, according to Kent.

Inside the front cover is a bookplate inscribed with the Latin phrase "Ex Libris Adolf Hitler," a clue to its owner.

"The bookplate is the main giveaway — that was a plate he put on all his books that were in his residences," Kent said.

It's estimated Hitler amassed somewhere in between 6,000 and 16,000 books during his life.

This book was likely taken by allied troops as a souvenir before making its way to a collector in the United States from whom LAC purchased it for roughly $6,000, Kent said.

A 'creepy item'
When the book appeared on LAC's radar, Kent said curators struggled with the moral implications of purchasing it. Other institutions including the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum refuse to buy items owned by Nazis.

Ultimately, Kent said, LAC decided to purchase the book because of the prevalence of Holocaust denial and xenophobia.

"While this is certainly a creepy item, the decision to acquire it was simple," he said. "The chance to acquire an item like this reminds us of ... the role we play in ensuring the memory of the Holocaust is preserved."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies is supporting LAC's purchase.

Rather than being in the hands of groups like neo-Nazis, it is better the book is somewhere where it can be studied, said president and CEO Avi Benlolo.

"We didn't know this piece of history and now we do because the library bought it."

The book also brings that dark period home for Canadians, Kent said.

"While we talk about the Holocaust as a European event ... I think what this item does is reminds us as Canadians that conflicts and human tragedies that seem far away can actually come to Canada."

LAC actually purchased the book in June, but only unveiled it Wednesday after months of careful restoration.

LAC will host a International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration on Sunday, where the book will be displayed.

As guilty as the leafs feel, you'd think they were actually gassing Jews left and right.

Rake them without remorse, if you don't then they'll just rake themselves out of self-loathing.

Or maybe it was just the foundation for some silly "And this is why the US/Canada are our enemies" propaganda.
People love to declare that Hitler wanted to "take over the world" like he was some cartoon villain, when his original goal was just to cleave a nice big chunk out of Europe to built his giant German Empire with Germania in the centre.
I doubt there have been any serious plans to actually assault the US mainland and invading it, since that's a ridiculous plan, even for the toothbrush-moustached megalomaniac himself.

This is just silly.
What "moral implications"? Why wouldn't a holocaust memorial want something like that?
Are these morons so idelogically blinded that they think buying some object like this to display it in a museum means they endorse the contents or the creators?
I don't even.

Jews take donations, but they don't spend shekels on their own scam. Hitler memorabilia is to be donated never purchased, that's profit lost goy!

Yeah allow my inner history sperg to emerge for a second and immediately call bullshit on the whole "HITLER WAS PLANNING TO INVADE CANADA AND KILL ALL THE JEWS THERE!" thing.

First things first, the whole "if Hitler won the war he would order world conquest" thing is masturbatory horseshit that evolved from wartime propaganda and hyperbolic spin by post-war Nazi leaders* since even the most batshit crazy Nazis were well aware that there is a whole fucktunne of difference between "become the most powerful country on the planet" and "military invade and colonise every last corner of the planet" and even fully meth'd up Hitler never gave any serious consideration to theatres beyond Europe and north Africa aside from the barely funded plan for a transatlantic bomber that might mess with american war production.

Hell in his Mein Kampf and Mein Kampf 2: electric kill-a-jew books he explicitly stated that other than vague future wars against America and probably Japan in order to ensure the Third Reich's supremacy and security there was no real plan other than consolidating and perfecting the expanded German state in Europe. Nigga didn't even care much about recapturing Imperial Germany's old African colonies and only paid them lip-service to shut Ribbentrop up.

Secondly, the Holocaust was not a result of Hitler's long-term evil plan to murderfuck every jew on the planet because "mwahahahahahah im evil" or similar cartoon reasoning. The mass murder of Jews, Slavs, Roma and other untermensch was the direct result of Hitler realising the war was lost thanks to terminal lack of resources** and his fucktard generals ruining his last desperate gamble to take the caucus oil fields, and thus Hitler decided to apply his beloved Scorched Earth policy to all of the "enemy peoples" he could reach as the ultimate fuck-you to the Jewish/Bolshevik conspiracy he blamed for all Germany's ills. This is why the Holocaust was mostly limited to "kill teachers/leaders/intellectuals and force the rest into ghettos or slavery" before the fuckups of 1941, after which the Einsatzgruppen**** were given "go nuts" orders and the Death Camps started being created.

Had Germany actually won the war as it intended, there would likely have never been anything resembling the Holocaust that happened. Odds are a variant of the Madagascar plan would have been implemented with all Jews within the borders of the new Germany and its vassal states being shipped to an easily isolated corner of a wasteland either in central Asia or Africa and placed under German control as a disarmed third world shithole version of Israel. Meanwhile Slavs would have been hunger-planned into near extinction outside of carefully controlled slave populations and maybe a reservation or two in the far east of Germany's territory.

While this all would add up to a hell of a lot more death and suffering than happened IRL, this would pretty much be the end of it until the Reich inevitably fell apart due to the fact it was an economic train-wreck that made the latter day USSR economy look like a bastion of prosperity and sustainability. Hitler and his crew didn't give a shit about the untermensch active in other countries so long as they never posed any kind of threat to his vision, and he certainly wouldn't have wasted his time starting wars that could threaten his now fulfilled dream just to get at them.

Odds are this document was little more than a "look how degenerate this enemy country is" source for potential propaganda had Canada in and of itself ever been deemed necessary for a full Goebbels treatment rather than part of any grandiose war plan.

* Lookin at you Albert Speer you spineless faux-apologetic cunt
** ESPECIALLY oil since Britain cut them off via sea, and the USSR held the only oil they could access by land
*** Since they were too obsessed with fapping around outside Moscow in hopes of making the soviets decide to politely give up instead of actually following basic strategy
**** Whose policy until then in the Soviet Union was more "cull a fucktunne of them and enslave the rest, and if you want to kill more than fine by us" and the worst massacres beforehand had mostly been the result of their local commander ordering them in response to Soviet resistance or for their own gratification rather than due to orders from high command, though Himmler certainly was having ideas of taking things to the next level.

I don't even.

I remember people being very triggered by how a museum (can't remember where) had purchased a copy of Mein Kampf. It's like they want us to be constantly reminded of the Holocaust, but they don't want us to talk about the historical evidence... mmmm...

It's very odd how desperate they are to make Canadians feel guilty for something their country stopped. The government really likes to hammer the fact that the warehouses at Auschwitz were nicknamed "Canada" because of how full of stuff they were, as though that were something that would make Canadians feel guilty.

"While we talk about the Holocaust as a European event ... I think what this item does is reminds us as Canadians that conflicts and human tragedies that seem far away can actually come to Canada."

The Man in the High Castle was a work of fiction even if Britain lost I grantee Canada would declare Independence or get annexed by the US so we wouldn't have to worry about having an enemy directly bordering Us.

Yeah, there was never any serious consideration for invading Canada.

I am certain there was a war plan for it, but only because every country with a military creates a war plan for any even remotely possible situation, and the war plan probably was not revised in great detail. The USA had a war plan in case a hostile government took control of Canada, for example.

With how long we Americans have suffered beneath the snooty Canadian menace, please, let us have this little dream.

Let us have our vision of the Day of the Rake.

Even plans to invade Britain were only meant as a last resort if Germany could not force Britain into peace.
The precondition to enacting Operation Sea Lion was having complete superiority both in the water and the air over the English Channel and even then they didn't consider the chances of success to be very high.

In that light, the idea that Germany might have had any kind of genuine plan to invade the USA or Canada is just ludicrous and as you said, there might have been some vague draft for such a plan, but noone would have ever dreamed of actually enacting it.
At most, they might expect a possibility of waging war against the USA and Canada way after winning WW2 some time down the line, in case those nations tried to free Europe. But even so, the main strategy to deal with that would most likely be "Shittons of artillery batteries on the coastline".
I simply don't believe that Hitler would have even humored the thought of attacking and invading a place so far away, given how much manpower it would demand and the utter lack of trans-antlantic force projection.
