Discovered in the 1970s, Petosiris was a government official of the early Roman Empire buried in the middle nowhere in the western Egyptian desert, 150 miles away from the Nile. Despite his name being Egyptian in origin, his tomb marks him as someone of both Roman and native Egyptian heritage, shown by the artwork decorating the mausoleum.

Turkish General and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Kenan Evren at a press conference

The general is the leader of the 1980 Turkish coup d’etat. The coup was enacted in response to the political violence between radical left wing and right wing groups and the inability of the politicians to form a government. The military junta was in power for three years, an incredibly long time especially when compared to other military governments, before restoring civilian rule in 1983.

It was Turkey’s most brutal and far reaching coup to date. Half a million were detained, hundreds were killed either by execution or torture in prison and thousands lost their citizenship. Every major political party was shut down and their leaders were arrested and banned from politics (albeit temporarily).

Morning of the coup, Evren went on television to announce that the Turkish military had taken over the country. In case anyone wondered what he sounded like:

(Unfortunately I could not find a version with English subs)

It is a sad irony of Turkish politics that their civil governments are often so utterly atrociously bad that a military coup actually improves things.

The decade long conflict between radical socialist and nationalist groups claimed thousands of lives. It was basically a low level civil war. Imagine the Northern Irish “Troubles” but across the entire country. The politics were so fucked that the junta didn’t restore civilian rule for at least 3 years (they usually stay in power for a year and a half at most). It was extremely brutal but by the end life at least went back to normal and the average citizen could go about their day not worrying if some commie or Turanist is going to jump them.

Imagine Germany having had a powerful military junta, and instead of letting Hitler take over, they'd just said okay, you two batches of retards (meaning Nazis versus commies) need to knock this the fuck off, then rounding up bunches of both groups and giving them lead therapy, and restoring order.

Tell me that wouldn't have been better than what happened in reality.

An archivist found a long forgotten 8mm film reel in an old metal box, marked “Philipines 1942”. Thinking it was lost WWII footage, he sent it in to be restored/digitized. When he got the footage back, he found puppies instead.

In a history lesson in school we watched a old Soviet WW2 film that was fillmed on location of the Tractor Factory using POW German Soldiers captured in or around the battle and there is a shot of the factory where they put a camera on a crane and lifted it up while they where renacting the fight and it was mind blowing seeing how horrific that battle was even on a slow day it must have been a meat grinder.
