Tamils are mostly Hindu, the dominant Sinhalese are the Buddhists. There has been a great deal of violence from both sides against the other based on religion.

Modern suicide bombing where they strap a bomb vest to an ostensible civilian and send them to blow up civilian targets was probably invented by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, but the suicide vest was AFAIK invented by the Chinese during WWII (used against Japanese tanks in battle) and obviously suicide attacks have existed for a long, long time.

But Buddhism is by no means a religion of peace. Part of the reason (there were also other reasons) my mom's family moved to America was because of harassment that my grandfather faced from Buddhists in Taiwan for being a prominent atheist. Buddhists monks fight in the streets all the time and the Tokyo subway sarin attack was carried out by a Buddhist group. Shinto gets all the blame, but Zen Buddhism played a major role in Imperial Japan's cruelty. Still, if you asked me whether I'd rather import a million Buddhists or a thousand Muslims into the country I'd go with the former any day.
