What was Rune Factory about?
I was lead to believe it was like God of War but once you defeated an enemy you could put them on a farm. Like if you battled and defeated a Unicorn you could have unicorn in your stable but I think that was a bunch of 4th grade bull shit and wishful thinking of kids that didn't know what the fuck they were talking about.
I still don't know what Rune Factory is, I memory holed it along with River King

This has always stuck with me. "Push THE start".
I don't know why but it always cracked me up.

I tried the snes Harvest Moon once a long time ago. It seemed boring.
Oh yeah, anyone play Stardew Valley?
I also tried Stardew Valley relatively recently and it seemed boring.
Allegedly the playerbase is actually majority female with like a 60/40 split, but idk how true that is. It's absolutely a little fruity but very charming.
I don't know about Stardew Valley but the Harvest Moon series always gave me the impression it was made for girls. I don't mean that literally but when I was young the box art of the N64 Harvest Moon just made me think it was a girl's game for girls. I know it's not really but I wouldn't really be surprised if the majority of Stardew Valley players were women.

It's the template that Stardew Valley would later adopt. It's Harvest Moon with like, dungeon diving and fantasy elements. I've only played one or two of the games but I do remember you could domesticate the fantasy monsters as farm animals.

I think Stardew Valley is way closer to some of the earlier Rune Factory games than it is Harvest Moon.

I had forgotten Stardew Valley was that old.
Oh yeah, and the Harvest Moon series around the same time got somewhat confusing.

In Japan HM is called 牧場物語 (Bokujou Monogatari, which translates to "Farm Story"), and in English it was localized by Natsume as "Harvest Moon" (which they trademarked). Then Marvelous got the rights to localizing 牧場物語, but they could not call it "Harvest Moon" because of the Natsume trademark. So that's where the "Story of Seasons" name comes from. Meanwhile Natsume made at least one vidya that sorta imitated older HM: I recall it was not very well received among anons posting in the RF/HM general threads.

Harvest Moon: Winds of Anthos is pretty cool, even if the title does, unfortunately, make me think of this guy farting.

That's news to me, I don't think you can get married in STH, I know because I tried wooing Gwen way back in the day, but STH was another game that seemed pointless. After you saved the homeland, you just kinda farm forever with no real direction unless I missed something.
If I recall properly, the original game had various endings based on what you did to make the valley a protected area from being destroyed or something and then you could replay the game for another ending or do endless. Like I said I didn't actually play the PS2 ones too much so maybe I'm mixing something up somewhere.
The PSP version of whichever I'm remembering was a "Special Edition" which, going off memory I'm pretty sure added Marriage and a decent bit of story events before reaching the endless mode. I mostly remember that because Alice had a few hoops to jump through with the way you handled those story events. As far as I recall she either left the village or moved in based on that. I think you also could fuck up whether she stayed as a marriage candidate or stayed as only a resident too.
It's also possible I have the game wrong though. Leaf Valley or something I think?

I've only messed with Rune Factory 4 but it was definitely more RPG with farming stuff than farming with RPG if that makes sense. It's got some story going on, you run around and explore mostly simple dungeons with bosses and level ups. You actually have to domesticate the various animal monsters because that's how you get your cow, chicken, sheep, etc for produce products unless you're planning to only work with random drops from killing enemies or trying to buy them. It does help that at least some of them can do farm stuff for you. I've heard you can tame some bosses and stuff but can't confirm, I think it was extra stuff you can do after beating the game/story. Completely forget if there's any kind of mounting mechanic, I do know you could bring a monster along as a party member when leaving town. You could also bring along another town member after gaining some friendship with them.
Otherwise it's got the usual cooking, fishing, marriage things. Not sure if the whole series followed suit, but 4 had you able to make your own equipment and tools which also had stats and levels etc.

At first glance it does look incredibly boring but if you let it it'll get its hooks into you.

Interesting. I don't mind the fantasy fighting parts of it, I kinda dig having to fight off bats or flubber things going home at night.

Japan never cease to amaze me in their efficiency in creating the most autism driven things ever. I don't even mean that negatively. The Japanese know exactly what will sell and they will sell the same product for decades. I'm willing to bet if it weren't for the western market, their newest console would still be the wii and playstation 2 maybe 3. They evolve because they have to keep up.
Probably a hot take, but I respect Sony. I stuck with N64 until 2004 when I finally got a PS2 and that has to be the greatest system beyond all just based on the selection of games. Jet Li's Rise to Honor blew my fucking mind with the right analog stick being the attack.
I'll relent and say the 360 was leagues better than the PS3 though.

I've played the majority of them, they were great. I have a soft spot for HM64 especially because it's one of the few things me and my brother have in common - even though it's a buggy mess compared to the PS1 version that came out slightly later.

What was the Wii one, Friends of Mineral Town? What I played of it was good.

I finished the SNES one once. I remember making my farm thrive, and marrying the blonde barfly chick.

The GBA one, Friends of Mineral Town, seems interesting too with plenty of shit to do. Has anybody played it to say if it's worth sinking time into?

Loved harvest moon but Rune Factory 4 is where its at for me. 5 is cancer and 3 was fun for storyline but the back and forth was annoying.

Although an old boyfriend got me into harvest moon by setting up a linux PC and making me learn Ubuntu to play emulated versions years ago it'sa fond memory.

Can't say I particularly cared for mainline Harvest Moon, but I did play the everloving shit out of Rune Factory 4 towards the end of the 3DS's life cycle.

There's a bunch of Harvest Moon games on PS+. If I've never played one before which one should I look for?

I haven’t played any Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons in a while but they’re peak comfort games. My first was Friends of Mineral Town.

I’ve been meaning to get back to Stardew and Rune Factory though.
