Seasons 1 through 2 is the worst part of the GW2 story as you spend most of your time standing around talking to people or reading journals, but as you said the writers just aren't good for a novel plot. The story gets better from HoT through season 4 as is almost entirely a straight forward high fantasy action adventure romp where you spend most of your time careening through the jungle to kill the evil big bad dragon. Season 5/Icebrood Saga has a lot more talking again but this time it was overall decently executed (Charr PC acting OOC aside). EoD however is when they really fumbled and you are back to several hours of standing around and talking and listening to drama that is mediocrely written. I don't think any of the HoT writers were left by that point.

Played this game on and off for years and the story has definitely never been a big reason to play for me, although I do like some of the lore/worldbuilding the infantile reddit-writing and constant yapping dashes it and I spent much of the time just alt-tabbed out.

That said, the current story (VoE) is way better already as the cast is 90% men and not shrieking banshees who act like teenage brats (especially a certain bald rat goblin).

The problem is that WoW's main story rarely acknowledges the main character. The player was personally appointed by the High King and the Warchief as their general in WoD, but then come BFA you are treated as a footsoldier rather than assigned command over a front. In Legion you become Highlord of the Silver Hand, Archmage of the Kirin Tor, Deathlord of the Ebon Blade, etc. But then you aren't summoned to Dalaran along with the other Archmages in TWW, you don't command the Ebon Blade in Shadowlands, etc.
To be fair, what GW2 does is just blabber "commander!" at every turn. New expansion, new people; "ah, so youre the COMMANDER?". It gets equally dull after a while.

When all is said and done, only WoW got any meaningful lore punch to it. I liked the asura chick who died and still it was just sort of.. eh?

Except SoTo where they tried something different by having you join a new organisation.

They didn't fully commit to it though and what would have been a good idea got wasted on a plot that got nowhere. They clearly were top ambitious with SoTo and didn't have the ressources for it so everything was half-assed

I won't go on about janthir as I think story and lore-wise it was a downgrade... While the maps and events are an upgrade. (So at least they went the right way in that path)

I'm curious to see what happens with VoE as it has potential for a new good villain.

(I still think the peak of the story was HoT and living world season 4, especially the whole Joko arc)

Odds of another charismatic and fun villain who also has a point is low, he'll probably get turned into a comically evil cardboard cutout who is slaughtered and replaced by a "good" girlboss.

There is nothing about this post I don't love. Please cover every single LW episode you play just as extensively.
As much as I'd love to, I first have to skip to Heart of Thorns and skill up my elite specialization (daredevil) because at 80 and scaled down, the vanilla thief is just mediocre and boring. It's also surprising that, to the game's credit, they've managed to make the thief class something that's actually fun and involves hit and run tactics unlike WoW's consistently broken for over half a decade Rogue. Also it's going to cost money so I'm debating if I just want to do season 1 or if I should shell out the funds and it's not cheap.

Not for the thief's opponents in pvp, as far as I remember. Was probably the second most bullshit class to play against, after mesmer.
But I checked out when the first paid expansion got released, or somewhere around that time.
How's warrior doing, btw? I really liked the "class fantasy" (forgive me the gay term) of a completely non-magical slasher-smasher. Liked healing people and clearing their debuffs by yelling at them, too. Actually enjoyed the pve because of that - vanilla warrior had great dps, and the ability to spec myself into something capable of supporting the party in some way was cool, in a game with no real class roles or interactions where almost everybody else was just pouring damage into the target.
Also, greatsword sounded like you were hitting your enemies with a metal pipe and I used to find that completely hilarious.

I've been playing long enough to share some impressions.

TLDR; GW2 is worth checking out if someone wants to play casual mmo.

Here are my shitty opinions. Story in GW2 is atrocious. Most of it is gay, teenage fantasy fanfic. Unfortunately some chapters must be completed to unlock fun features and maps. I turn off character voices and do/watch something else until shitty dialogs end. WvW is fun, but thanks to outfits every zerg rush/battle looks like a gay parade. Glad my eyes can't get aids. PvP mode is great and can be played casually outside of organized events. I spend 90% of my time doing meta events, world bosses, chilling and roaming on maps I enjoy.
Crafting is nice and not very grindy besides ascended and legendary gear. Micropayments are not predatory or pay to win. Can be circumvented by farming gold. Player economy is done right. Market can be played for profit. On the other hand every map having its own token, currency, butt plug extravaganza is beyond retarded and forces use of wiki to figure out what the fuck is going on. Collecting all that shit creates illusion you're doing something while in reality it's a massive time sink. Hate it.
Classes are fun and thanks to elite specializations (unfortunately locked behind dlcs) don't feel stale. I like the fact all class elite specs can be unlocked on one character. Only the basic warrior falls flat next to other heavy armor options. Combat is dynamic and usually goes beyond autistic pressing same two buttons for 10 minutes. Community is mostly ok. Don't have to talk, can randomly join groups and people rezz you if you happen to die during events. Only half of faggots that unlocked dragon mount before SofO dlc should be gassed.

Edit: Wish I could edit all 'Commander' to 'Mein Führer'. Would be much funnier.

I quit when they released ascended-tier armor because of the sheer amount of cloth I had to grind. Every other resource you could collect enough of, but cloth was a mod drop that was a slow trickle at best. Made like half of a set, in the end.

Noted. What about the elite specs? One of them gets a torch offhand, which is gay (and made me reconsider dropping money on that whole add-on), I wanted an offhand pistol, damn it.

Yeah, ascended crafting is rough. Also time locked mats are a mistake.

There's a pretty funny elite spec for warriors - Bladesworn. You get a special pistol. Besides that you can use a sword-canon. This spec's main thing is blowing things up. First time I've tried him my cat almost killed itself in panic. We both weren't ready for the noise. Some people may cry and complain, cause Bladesworn seems to be less competitive. Personally I don't care - it was fun, like something from B action movies.

So, like every. single. fucking. expansion introduction? I look back at WoW: Holy shit those first easy 15 kill quests just to get gear that shits on the raid tier you're already using. Rushing in, blood pumping, you're lagging, you got to get up for school tomorrow. GW2? Here's 15 mins of ranting from an NPC.

The slow-talking bears in Janthir caused me physical pain. I bought VoE on release day but I don't have the energy to unlock the zone, even if the so-called best farm is in there. The elite specs are alright.

I hate how if I want, I can chill and go around farming metals or wood. But there's no similar recourse for cloth/leather. It's not optimal if you look at it in terms of gold/hour but sometimes I'd rather farm old school than circling the same metas every day.

That said, I should log in and orphan farm before the event ends.

I know, right? I understand in theory, but in reality... just, why? I guess it's autumn in Janthir... at least I think it is. Guess in the spring bears run around like crackheads. Janthir is worth unlocking, even if you must alt-tab everytime some bear starts talking. There are some cool features, like a fun world boss etc. Arena in the beartown (?) is ok. You can drop in for 20-30 minutes, defeat mini-bosses and call it a day. It's quick, without bothersome mechanics.

New dlc has two nice maps and seems pretty compact so far. There's just that one hero challenge with a gay pirate...

I guess some multiboxer is a fan/alog of Quartering.

Found the only thread that matters :)

I watched this thing which was pretty comfy. The whole art style of GW1 just reeks of non-western art direction? The first many iterations of GW1 looked like John MMORPG: The Foreman Grill Experience. Then they take a turn and it suddenly looks like korean slop with GW2. I remember finding the lead artist's portfolio and it's literally just his style replicated. Like Giger and the xenomorph.

Anyway: I really, really want to get into GW truly. Play GW1 during downtime, do some content in GW2 otherwise, but I just loathe the combat. I like that it's not as stiff and heavy as WoW, but things move so fucking fast. Hit 4 buttons, change weapon, hit 4 buttons, F1 F2 F3, hit more buttons, swap, dodge, 1 2 3, repeat. And then you're at the complete mercy of whether your spec does max damage with 5 buttons or bottom damage with 20.

I love necro and ritualist, always have. Now they're here in GW2 and ritualist is like a nuking gunslinger? And even if I somehow get into a class, you can't race change in case you get tired of being a slighty taller human. Oh and the horizontal makeup of the game.. You beat one expansion, get no new gear, then do another and you've no easier time doing any of that cause it's a horizontal progression system. "Welcome to the flying expansion! Hope you did 80 hours of a previous expansion so you actually got a flying mount. :) ".

And yet, the simple fact both games are on Steam and not some retarded launcher makes it much easier to dip back into now and then.

I can't wait for more of VoE's maps. I'm going through the story because I must, but 'damn, that map nice'. I've started fishing there mainly for the view (it sucks ass when it comes to profit).
