Why is Greta Thunberg so triggering? How can a 16-year-old girl in plaits, who has dedicated herself to the not-exactly sinister, authoritarian plot of trying to save the planet from extinction, inspire such incandescent rage?

Last week, she tweeted that she had arrived into New York after her two week transatlantic voyage: “Finally here. Thank you everyone who came to see me off in Plymouth, and everyone who welcomed me in New York! Now I’m going to rest for a few days, and on Friday I’m going to participate in the strike outside the UN”, before promptly giving a press conference in English. Yes, her second language.

Her remarks were immediately greeted with a barrage of jibes about virtue signalling, and snide remarks about the three crew members who will have to fly out to take the yacht home.

This shouldn’t need to be spelled out, but as some people don’t seem to have grasped it yet, we’ll give it a lash: Thunberg’s trip was an act of protest, not a sacred commandment or an instruction manual for the rest of us. Like all acts of protest, it was designed to be symbolic and provocative. For those who missed the point – and oh, how they missed the point – she retweeted someone else’s “friendly reminder” that: “You don’t need to spend two weeks on a boat to do your part to avert our climate emergency. You just need to do everything you can, with everyone you can, to change everything you can.”

Part of the reason she inspires such rage, of course, is blindingly obvious. Climate change is terrifying. The Amazon is burning. So too is the Savannah. Parts of the Arctic are on fire. Sea levels are rising. There are more vicious storms and wildfires and droughts and floods. Denial is easier than confronting the terrifying truth.

Then there’s the fact that we don’t like being made to feel bad about our life choices. That’s human nature. It’s why we sneer at vegans. It’s why we’re suspicious of sober people at parties. And if anything is likely to make you feel bad about your life choices -- as you jet back home after your third Ryanair European minibreak this season – it’ll be the sight of small-boned child subjecting herself to a fortnight being tossed about on the Atlantic, with only a bucket bearing a “Poo Only Please” sign by way of luxury, in order to make a point about climate change.

But that’s not virtue signalling, which anyone can indulge in. As Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and their-four-private-jets-in-11-days found recently, virtue practising is a lot harder.

Even for someone who spends a lot of time on Twitter, some of the criticism levelled at Thunberg is astonishing. It is, simultaneously, the most vicious and the most fatuous kind of playground bullying. The Australian conservative climate change denier Andrew Bolt called her “deeply disturbed” and “freakishly influential” (the use of “freakish”, we can assume, was not incidental.) The former UKIP funder, Arron Banks, tweeted “Freaking yacht accidents do happen in August” (as above.) Brendan O’Neill of Spiked called her a “millenarian weirdo” (nope, still not incidental) in a piece that referred nastily to her “monotone voice” and “the look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes”.

But who’s the real freak – the activist whose determination has single-handedly started a powerful global movement for change, or the middle-aged man taunting a child with Asperger syndrome from behind the safety of their computer screens?

And that, of course, is the real reason why Greta Thunberg is so triggering. They can’t admit it even to themselves, so they ridicule her instead. But the truth is that they’re afraid of her. The poor dears are terrified of her as an individual, and of what she stands for – youth, determination, change.

She is part of a generation who won’t be cowed. She isn’t about to be shamed into submission by trolls. That’s not actually a look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes. It’s a look that says “you’re not relevant”.

The reason they taunt her with childish insults is because that’s all they’ve got. They’re out of ideas. They can’t dismantle her arguments, because she has science – and David Attenborough – on her side. They can’t win the debate with the persuasive force of their arguments, because these bargain bin cranks trade in jaded cynicism, not youthful passion. They can harangue her with snide tweets and hot take blogposts, but they won’t get a reaction because, frankly, she has bigger worries on her mind.

That’s not to say that we should accept everything Thunberg says without question. She is an idealist who is young enough to see the world in black and white. We need voices like hers. We should listen to what she has to say, without tuning the more moderate voices of dissent out.

Why is Greta Thunberg so triggering? Because of what she represents. In an age when democracy is under assault, she hints at the emergency of new kind of power, a convergence of youth, popular protest and irrefutable science. And for her loudest detractors, she also represents something else: the sight of their impending obsolescence hurtling towards them.

Found this thought-provoking indeed.

The 'joke' is that people, and presumably men in particular, will start to care about climate change only now that it's affecting the size of their penises. Because patriarchy/muh dik/men so fragile.
Unless size doesn’t matter pride type or whatever they call themselves speak up and say size doesn’t matter or small positivity or something

So, some shit for brains winchester university spent $32,000 to have a lifesize statue of greta built

I can just imagine the austistic screeching that will ensue if somebody smashes it up one night or cuts the head off

Still trying to deny she's not a kid anymore it seems with a statue like that. Oi dumbasses, the kid defense don't work against pointing out bullshit when she's of age. It also should never work because in cases like that it's the people using her as a mouthpiece that should be laughed at off stage.
I honestly feel a little sad for her. The best thing for her mental health issues would be for her to socialize with normal people, go to a regular school, get a job, etc. But now she is a public figure and always being put on display and criticized and so on. That's stressful on normal people, I can't imagine someone with her mental problems coping very well with all of it.
She's almost certainly miserable. But you can thank her narcissistic handler parents for her fate. It's why I focus almost solely on them, since it's mainly daddy and his creepy Indian Friend who feed her her lines, and her mom is almost certainly culpable in some way too.
Even though Greta's offered good advice like using less plastics and buying used things, ultimately she should be encouraged to finish school, make a few friends, go into higher education and study sciences related to climate change and pollution where she'll make an even bigger impact and breakthrough one day.
Ain't happening until her douchebag parents realize that they can't squeeze money out of her forced celebrity.

Comedian Lee Hurst has been banned from Twitter, and had his upcoming comedy tour cancelled, for taking a shot at Greta..... It's strange because I thought he'd stole the joke, but it's apparently his own work.

I have heard Lee Hurst make dozens of insinuations that David Gower is routinely sexually serviced by a male love slave on television. While sat next to David.
So presumably the issue is Greta is being treated the same as Lee did a wealthy white British man a couple of decades ago? How unreasonable.

Edit: here we are. At 35 seconds for the David Gower having sex with men;

Rate me as 🧩, but I think I'm missing the joke in this tweet. Is she saying the user account of Sky News has a small dick -- or is she implying she's a size queen who's protesting climate change because she wants to ride a fat hog? Either way it's disturbing.
Yeah, the joke went over my head too. I assumed she was implying SkyNews subscribers have tiny penises because it's a right wing news site.

I'm not religious in the slightest but this is some "false idol" shit right here.
But this is not a cult, no sir!:story:

So do I. But did she ever have a shot at a real job? She went to super sped school iirc, and often even couldn't handle that and stayed home. Not the type to successfully finish college.
Both she and her mother have said the whole climate activism thing made Greta happier than ever before. Greta said she made friends for the first time and her mother says Greta is happier than ever in this article (it is just a shortened, slightly more coherent version of her book). Lets see what happens if the whole thing starts crashing down (it already started. Nobody gave a shit about the last "international climate strike". Even the media who used to call Greta stunning and brave at every opportunity didn't even bother with a headline.
It's funny, they've clearly tried to make her look less retarded than she does IRL but also given her a freakishly bulbous forehead that makes her look like an alien.
It might be my eyes fucking me over, but doesn't Greta herself have a weirdly small skull? It is like her hairline is almost the highest point of her head.

I'm calling bullshit to some degree on every thing that the Thunbergs say. All this does to me is explain what the mother's role is in the exploitation. Daddy worked with Creepy Indian Man to write her words for her and coach her into gurning them out in pre arranged meetings they set up as their human shield (mainly because of course they'd use a child as an excuse to censor rebuttals and hide from criticism). Mommy fed her the brainwashing at home, networked play dates for her to reaffirm the brainwashing, and probably fabricated excuses to keep her out of school alongside daddy.

That she may or may not have caused her clear deformities by partaking the wine is also a bullet against any of this being done for her rather than "for them".

I do think that her autistic obsession and screeching did lead her parents to embrace the whole ecowarrior thing (fits well with mommy superwoke). As I mantioned before, I did see her at a conference (before she took off and became the worldwide icon for brave looking slacktivism) from a distance. It honestly was weird. One the one hand, she seemed shy and like she hated to be on stage, so that is supporting what you are saying. On the other, she was an outright brat to her father. You can even see it in the trailer where she tells him to be quiet and he immediately backs away. I am convinced, the girls are running the show at home.

I did notice that her mother conveniently left out that they tried to shill Greta's story to swedish television years before her oh so brave climate strike. She also twists the whole documentary crew thing. She said in the article linked above that they just showed up, yet we know now they hired him. There is literal footage of her setting up her sign in the movie. Same with the dude who took a photo for social media (Ingmar Rentzhog). Plus there is the younger one riding on her sisters coattails and building her singing career on the sudden fame.
We also know for a fact that Greta isn't running her own Facebook account. Why should Twitter be any different? I am torn on that one.

Tl;dr I think you are right and her parents pushed her into the limelight. But I think the climate angle was her idea if that makes sense.

I mean I'm not shocked Greta wants to do that over school and real people things, since hey no school. Also not surprising given she was a kid whose parents almost certainly tried regularly terrifying her with their millenarian religious fundamentalist take on climatology.

Winchester University's Student Union is not very happy with the statue.

I understand why some of them aren't exactly very pleased. This is during a time when students can't even go to classes in person and yet they're expected to learn and do assignments just from online even if the course is a predominately practical module while paying thousands of pounds for university services or accommodations they can't even use or live in.

Lmao they're building an idol, at huge expense, to erect a statue to worship some cunt on territory they're not even allowed to visit, despite paying huge amounts of money to attend said "university."

I would say that they're learning an invaluable life lesson, viz. to be suspicious of those who proclaim their virtue loudly, but tbh they're probably too fucking dumb to make the connection if they're students at Winchester 'University'.

To be honest, I can't wait for the statue to be vandalised in a creative way.

Like the dude that took the time to make a papier mache bull just so it could hump one of the concrete cows in Milton Keynes. Hell, anything that's been done to those cows was pretty good.

Greta liking dick is going to piss off her billionaire masters. Her job is to keep presenting as a child well into her 20s. Then she will be assigned a boyfriend of vague ethnicity but considers himself Jewish.
They've replaced her a few months ago when she reached 18. I think the new girl is from South America or something. They wanted a more "diverse" face.
