Gray Zone Warfare is a open world PvPvE tactical looter shooter. It has big Wildlands and Tarkov vibes.

The game's background is an island in SEA after an 'incident' caused the UN to evac everyone and declare a STALKER-style exclusion zone. 3 competing Private Military Contractors have been tasked by their clients to investigate the island. You or your team insert and extract via helicopter, loot stuff, shoot NPCs and players, and build up a Tarkov level gear stash.

The triangle sprayed on the "No Entry" sign reminded me of the Skaven symbol. It'd be pretty funny if it was a stealth Warhammer game, Tarkov vs. Ratmen.
Tried looking up to see if there was any story, but apparently they're going to reveal more of that sometime later in December. Them drawing attention to Roadside Picnic has me curious on how far they might lean into outlandish stuff.
Title feels kind of generic, to be honest, but maybe it'll catch on.

I'm not dis-interested, but I wonder how they plan to distinguish themselves from Tarkov or if this is just trend chasing.

I want to see Metro as an extraction shooter. It's slow and clunky like Hunt is and has monsters like Hunt.
Or go the extraction shooter direction with a Middle Eastern bombed out city type of environment.
Tacticool stuff is really boring. Looting-shooting is really boring.

Welp, 23 minutes of RAW UNEDITED EPIC BALL SQUEEZING GAMEPLAY ARE OUT.

And it looks like modded Arma 3 with even worse audio, animations and movement. I know, I know >pre-alpha, but they felt ready enough to show this off.

Idk. I didn't think it looked all that bad. But the devs did say that they were a bit worried about it showing it. I think they just wanted to show something to prove that the game is real, because there are so many people claiming it's a complete scam.

Imo I think it looks really promising for something so early in development... But I don't really care much about the graphics either. I'm more concerned about the gameplay itself, the systems, etc. I expect a lot of stuff to be placeholders, and if not, I don't even mind much. I'll have to put some headphones on later and listen to the video again w/ the audio in mind though.

Well, they already seem to be doing that. Open-world map instead of instanced/more realistic ballistics and health systems, less weapon types and more focus on weapon modding, static world w/ infil/exfil via helicopter (similar to DMZ). There are definite differences. But realistically they just have to improve on a few things that Tarkov has failed at to really have a shot at doing well imo.

Sure, Tarkov is the extraction shooter, but Tarkov is also pretty buggy, and is filled with cheaters. And it's been buggy and filled with cheaters for years now, with no change in sight really.
If, for instance, GZW manages to do the things Tarkov is trying and failing to do (have functioning positional audio/ have non-laggy magnified optics/ have a functioning anti-cheat system) while managing to be better at the things Tarkov already does well (more realistic ballistics/more realistic health system) and improving on things that it doesn't seem capable of doing, like making it open-world (which Tarkov was originally supposed to be) and optimizing the game better? Then Tarkov might have some competetion.

We'll have to see what happens.

Dont get me wrong, I'm rooting for them to succeed. If they can squash the bugs and keep the cheaters out they'll be ahead of Tarkov. I love a good open world game but finding one that's optimized and can be played casually is pretty rare.

Me too. I don't usually get overly excited about games, but the systems they're supposedly implementing are things I've wanted in tactical shooters for a while, so it's hard to not feel a little excited.

As for the bit about optimization, I'll admit I have no idea how that stuff works. But I think it's just really hard to make a casual-friendly extraction shooter, just in general. The very nature of the subgenre is anti-casual in a way. But I do think there are good design methods to help balance games so that new and casual players at least have a chance against people who invest a lot of time, and I'm hoping the GZW devs put some effort into that sort of stuff. In any PVP game that has progression systems and skill-based gameplay, there's only so much that can be done, but Tarkov (for instance) was so anti-casual that it actually put off a lot of people from playing. Not because it's systems are so complicated or realistic but because it was (and still is, despite BSG's efforts) a game that is very hostile and unforgiving toward new players.

Anybody else notice the copy of Roadside Picnic on the desk? 1710474762771.png
I forgot to post the terminal ballistics video when it came out 2 weeks ago

For reference, it was 38% positive, now climbing at 61% and above.

Surprise surprise, the game devs have faggy politics. At least they aren’t trannies.

He’s probably not even right lol. Pretty sure the review bombing was Tarkov washouts that were mad their new toy wasn’t perfect day 1, mixed with Tarkov loyalists buying and refunding so they could leave a bad review.

GZW is giving me mixed vibes to be honest. Releasing in an early state just to cash in on washed-out Tarkov fans is a short-sighted decision. Not to mention that retarded Standard Edition bullshit that comes with different flavors on how much you want to Jew your money away. Maybe I'm just burned out on always-online shit being this greedy and unpolished.

Then again, Tarkov guns always had this flavor that can't be replicated in other games, as I have mentioned before, both Squad and Insurgency Sandstorm really dropped the ball hard on gun animations.

GZW wasn't ready for a public beta let alone early access release.

The game itself looks fine, but I do have some issued with the devs political shit, like em proudly annoucing that money gained from Belarus and Russian players (and yes specifically mentioned those), will be used to donate to Ukraines military and also having an "reference" to the latest disaster that happened in Russia involving a flood of an area due to a damn nearly bursting.

The devs think they are smart when other companies like Wargaming does this without bragging about it. Makes you think huh.
