Yeah I can see what you mean. However to me, this is kind of the antithesis of what GTA is meant to be about. I play GTA to piss around in a sandbox where I can do anything I dream of. There's a reason why a broken swingset is a small but substantial memory for people who played IV. It's because you can fuck around with the world.

I do like IV, but I don't really consider it a GTA game. It's a good game, just not a good GTA game. TBOGT kind of makes up for it though.

I have to disagree, I think GTA IV feels more in line with the III, VC, and SA.
V is just too tongue in cheek. But as long as they don't go that over the top Saints Row route I'll be happy.

I do agree that IV is more in-line with III in a lot of ways, but there is no way it's similar to VC and SA. I dunno, being forced to walk around in a gimp suit or using a spotlight to put tits on a building to promote a porn star doesn't seem very serious to me. Maybe it's just the setting. I mean, Liberty City has almost always been a depressing setting in GTA games, while Vice City and Los Santos wasn't taken as seriously.

But yeah we can both agree on the fact that they probably shouldn't go too over the top. I think and hope that'll be left for GTA Online and the singleplayer story stays grounded.

Most of the guys you mentioned, while not outright insulting R*, have all been on record saying they never played the games or saw clips of themselves portraying their roles until very recently. R* was and is pissed they weren't taken seriously at the time like a hollywood major studio (and let's be real, the late-boomers and early Gen-X did not care about R* or "games as art" [eugh] the way millennials and early Gen-Z do; their fascination was still in film and/or TV). James Woods will fondly recall and recite lines from his role as Hades in Disney's Hercules to this day on his social media, but has not once uttered a reference or mention of Michael Toreno.
They were professional and did their jobs, but the Housers were expecting to them to be in awe and infatuated with working with the 'bad boys'/Scorcese-Spielberg hybrids of the industry.

The only "star power" they hired in IV was limited to radio stations; getting acts like Daddy Yankee who were white-hot in their target demographics to play hosts (which killed the old GTA style of making radio DJs characters in their own right like Fernando, Lazlow, Toni, Adam First, Sage, etc and replaced with glorified cameos. The only people in V who at least try to be a character are Bootsy Collins and Don Cheto).
Michael Hollick's tardrage at R* for no royalties and the fact R* can't even throw the guy a measly bonus check kinda signals their greed.

Unfortunately, I think that's going to happen regardless. I hope I'm wrong, but "current day"ism is going to effect GTA in one way or another, and I don't see them going to the route of lampooning it like they might have done 10-20 years ago.

Why would they need to cross promote with GTA Online when they can just make their OWN parodies of brands for events and such?

Yeah I'm aware of the shit flinging and diva shit Liotta and Reynolds got up to with VC but in SA they had James Woods, Samuel L Jackson, Faizon Love, MC Eiht, The Game, fucking Peter Fonda, Rockstar isn't shying away from having big stars. R* said they won't hire high profile actors/actresses as MAIN roles because of those prior experiences. It'd be cheaper for them too.

Cara Delevingne on Non-Stop Pop FM played a pretty decent character too, though Bootsy Collins was absolutely the best. Pam Grier on The Lowdown does a pretty good job coming close to the Bootsy levels of humour with Mama G, sometimes.

It is kind of sad to replace the uniqueness of the characters with a bunch of cameos. I do think cameos can be done in a good way, but only rarely will you get someone willing to lampoon themselves to produce the level of comedy you get with characters like Toni. If only more celebrities had a better sense of humour.

If you can, that could maybe explain the face changes in the trailer compared with the leaks. I really hope it's true, since the closest we got to that was GTA SA.

Excellent station, excellent game, excellent cameo. Lagerfeld was a hilarious personality and very iconic. TBoGT is rightfully loved and I kind of miss that era.

I must admit that despite loving Karl Lagerfeld I was never 100% sure it was actually him; this is a nice surprise.

It was an experiment in doing a super serious GTA and while a huge sales success, left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths and led to Saints Row stealing a decent chunk of the audience with SR 3-4, which was more silly in tone ala the PS2 era games.

As for a remake of GTA4; the only way I can see that happening is if it is exclusive to the Switch/Switch 2 since it might be easier to port it to the Switch than port GTA 6.

SR3 was the first game I ever pre-ordered. Imagine my disappointment when I was expecting something dark and gritty but also a bit jokey.
SR2 was the Slim Shady LP of video games and that's a compliment. It was fucked up and dark, ghetto and gritty, but it had funny shit sprinkled in. Many an angry white boy spent hours in SR2. Then SR3 when total reddit le randumb and they doubled down with 4. Tried and failed miserably with Agents of Mayhem, and as a Hail Mary they tried to reboot it and made SR3 and SR4 look like masterpieces in hindsight.

The vehicle customization in SR2 was fantastic. I made redneck trucks and I'd take gang members cars because those were the only ones with the certain decals and I made my character look like a Crip, it was the ultimate gang banger larp game.

It was the fault of video game reviewers hyping up Saint's Row because "it isn't grey, and it's quirky". SR3 was shit and SR4 wasn't even a GTA clone. Looking back at those times is like look at early signs of a tumour with hindsight. The post 2009 gaming sphere doomed gaming.
