Japanese version of San Andreas has some really pathetic censorship

Just imagine living there and getting not only an inferior, glitchy copy of the game, but only being able to play it 3 fucking years after release. All because the same puritans like we've had in the US ala Jack Thompson threw a fit AND Soyny had a stick up their ass and made R* go thru the entire game with a fine toothed comb. It was mainly Sony's fault. The only thing the puritans actually got was an 18+ rating that required ID to buy, similar to how the ESRB operates. However Sony threw a fit and forced Rockstar and Capcom to censor the game.

Hopefully most of the Japanese just modchipped their PS2s and imported or pirated the EU or US release. Or they imported the game for PC. I mean, did anyone actually give a shit after 3 years? IV was 1 year off from releasing dammit.

This also reminds me of TLAD: The entire point of that expansion was to be a flip on GTAs formula. You start off strong, but you lose everything by the end of it all.

I think that's the reason why IV is so polarising: it's a flipped take on GTA. Some people liked the difference. Others didn't.

It's really fucking strange to me that something like GTA SA is censored in Japan despite not having a whole lot of gore or anything, or even outright encouraging you to kill random civilians, yet porn games are a dime a dozen out there and nobody seems to care a whole lot. Like one that made waves early on even in the west was that fucking Japanese porn game where the goal was to rape women on the subway or some shit. Rapelay maybe? It must just be a cultural thing I guess.

My favorite thing about the Japanese version is that because they didn't want to show acts of violence towards civilians in missions, they made literally everyone a member of the Ballas, regardless of how little sense that makes.

The Japanese just really hate the Ballas because they can't pronounces the word.

I meant as in the Yakuza games there really isn't much blatant hypocrisy like there is in RDR games. While I admit the hypocrisy is probably written on purpose for RDR especially 2.
If the Yakuza games were more like what Yakuza IRL it wouldn't be as much fun or even allowed in Japan. Japan doesn't like it's media glorifying the Yakuza, it's not like in the US where gangster films are a beloved genre with films like Godfather, Goodfellas, etc. There are gangster films there but it's done very differently so Sega isn't going to go balls out depicting the really real Yakuza, but instead a more sugar coated version.
Also real life Yakuza members that have played the game have basically all been in agreement that if any Yakuza were like Kiryu, getting in fights literally every time he turns a corner he'd be ousted from any family and certainly not be any ranking member.
The Yakuza games on it's own is much like Japan's censorship of GTA where every enemy that needs to be killed is specifically said to be a bad guy, much like in Yakuza you can't go around hitting civilians so they load up the free roam with gangs of enemies to the point it's almost annoying

Yakuza hypocrisy is so overt that there isn't a lot of point talking about it. It's not like with AssCreed turning pirates into freedom fighters who never harm civilians, the Yakuza are still horrible on screen with murders, bullying and sexual exploitation (only not shown to directly engage in the more unspeakable crimes) but they still get the song and dance on being honorable. While RDR and GTA has somewhat more nuanced image of the world.

Like what bothers me with the comparison is that Yakuza, as much as I liked the game, doesn't even try to deal with its subject materials, sticking mainly to safe tropes and plot points.

Speaking of Yakuza, didn't one of the games glorify the weird idol culture they have, that includes an underage female character partaking in it? There is a lot of questionable things these games praise, so it's funny that they cross the line at hitting civvies and portraying Yakuza too accurately.
As for an open world crime simulator in Japan, I don't even know if there is a good alternative. GTA Vice City was originally going to take place in Tokyo, before being changed to Miami due to the similarities to GTA 3 and it's drab tone. There is Sleeping Dogs that takes the whole gangster culture aspect more seriously but that game takes place in Hong Kong.

(nvm, i am. it seems to just add way more stuff when it comes to the original gameplay) Redone police scanners is a game changer for me, changing it to something like F.E.A.R will probably bring way more dynamic police chases and stuff like that.

I'd say yes with hesitation. I don't see R* just shelving GTA Online after 6's online launch, that's ridiculous. But, because of the PS4/XB1, larger updates would reach an inevitable end because of hardware limitations. Now, I see why GTA Online are separate entities for the next gen consoles. So that updates could be allocated at an efficient rate.

Of course, their planned obsolescence would be to get players to the latest entry. Fortnite is able to continue updates despite being on older platforms.

For GTA Online on PS4/XB1, it would depend on their active user base and the technological limitations. I can SEE them doing exclusive next-gen content to incentive their players to migrate over. PS3/360 to PS4/XB1 was a big leap, especially since GTA V pushed those systems to their limits.
