Necro but Relink is out. I played the demo and it is....not what I thought? I was expecting something in vein of your regular JRPG where you talk to people and whatnot. But from what I've seen it comes off more Monster Hunter with a practically nonexistent story...?
It certainly looks and runs beautifully but...idk.
I understand the localization is trash and the English VA is cringe? But the localization seems on par with their gacha game, so I dunno.

They give you side stories and stuff but its just not what i was thinking. I was hoping for more because I thought it was gonna be a regular JRPG like Tales or Trails or even FF or DQ where you have people to talk to and whatnot. But it appears this isn't the case.
The stories are apparently shit. Supposedly you have to have played the mobile game AND seen the anime because it literally drops you off in the middle with no context. So dumb.

That's so stupid. Usually they'd give you a crash course or something to get you up to speed, that doesn't happen at all?

What the hell is Cygames smoking? First they keep the garbage localizers that ruined Versus and now this?

Someone said something along the lines of "its Platinum Games, expect it to be unfinished"

As far as I can remember, that's not an accurate description. Platinum Games originally worked on the combat, but they stopped developing it some 4 years ago and what was left was reworked by a newly-created team within Cygames.

The mobile game is 10 years old this year so there's a lot of lore dump for any catchup. I played the demo and enjoyed it, but I'll try the full game and see what it's like. Supposedly there's no passes of any kind and you can play offline, so we'll see if that means DLC packs or not (or if they're full of shit).

Basically though? Relink is Monster Hunter with characters instead of classes, it's their first real foray into video games (mobileshit doesn't count and Versus was essentially made by Arcsys), and English VAs is a pain you should never subject yourself to.

They apparently censored anyone wearing a skirt with spats and Nyara(?)'s side boob is covered up. Doesn't sound like they'll be offering alternative original costumes, either. So a bad localization, and they decided to break from what their mobile and fighting game has. The fighting game has the same rating as well, both in Japan and here so there's no real excuse not to offer the original costumes for the RPG.

Shame they have dubtitles. The subtitles are the same as the English VA work, so it's gonna be cringe either way. The same team behind Versus with that infamous line regarding how the girls are too white, when the original script compliments them for it. Others checked and it's definitely a reference to them needing more sun.

They really need a new one. They've put in memes before, and even though I don't know much moonspeak it's obvious they get "creative" and add lines and dialogue that aren't from translation.

[EDIT]: I doubt it's much different on Discord, but I think it's also worth mentioning Granblue's Reddit community:

Related to the gacha game mechanics they are very helpful, updating guides, answering questions and will generally give you your answer if you ask enough.

Related to characters, they have bottom-tier garbage tastes, are obsessed with tranny and lesbian ideologies, and will close ranks on dissenting opinion. However, I get the impression that's all of Reddit in a nutshell.

There are multiple 200+ page threads slamming the jewification of Relink on steam. Weebs rise up.

Reading through some of these threads seeing the people defending it is creepy. They all talk with the same hipster snark and use "weeb" as an insult in a forum dedicated to Granblue Fantasy.

"Creators like it when you add a little oomph" this is what localizers actually believe.

Relink itself is pretty fun, good PC port, no microtransactions, battlepasses or any of that shit either. I speak a teeny tiny bit of moonrune, and the localization is about as bad as it could be short of inserting dated political jokes. I'm not even joking when I say a solid 90% of the lines are just completely fucking different from what the JP voice actors are saying, and in the most retarded ways imaginable. Someone will call out a character's name, and the English subtitle is five words long. Someone says "I'm alright, don't worry about me" and the subtitles say something along the lines of "Fight for everyone, captain". The localizers are also really obsessed with jamming the word "link" everywhere and anywhere, even though it's mentioned like once and a half in Japanese, because le ebin it's the title of the game.

Variety is not a bad thing, but changing the nature and dynamic of what is said can be damaging in the long term. Unfortunately, you'll get enhancements like changing, "I see" to, " Wow, I didn't know that before but I finally get it. I feel like such an idiot haha!", and those who can't see why it is bad shouldn't be involved in its localisation.

The other censorship is that some characters who wore underpants got changed to shorts, and there's less sideboob. Not the worst changes, but "give an inch" and all that, and I'm tired of being told that my oh-so-susceptible adult brain can't handle a little flesh in videogames.

Like that image shows, one of the lines they changed was "Let's go" to "Are ya ready for some ghost huntin'?"
What the fuck? Does this character have an accent? Are they mildly retarded? Who talks like this? It's cringe and dorky and feels like it belongs in Adventure Time. What is with geek culture millenials writing all their dialogue like it's coming from Bart Simpson? It sounds like a 38 year old hipster who researched how teens talk by watching toy commercials.

Remember, though, it's all done "in-house" so it's okay!

They seriously think Cygames has the energy to wrangle their localization department while working like crazy to keep the lights on or that they think it's a bunch of bilingual japs and not just - as I like to call them - convisadors, basically work visas that take over a company's culture. The only saving grace is this shit is just default retarded and not political so far. Not overtly, anyways. Hopefully @Scarlett Johansson is right that there's no real story, because fuck me... imagine keeping these retards. Gacha gamers probably don't care as much for story or this bullshit in general - I've seen so much cope across so many titles - but actual console or PC gamers will and this is your first impression with them. You ain't gonna get more gacha enthusiasts from this side of the hemisphere this way from those markets. I know it's probably like a beloved pet retard to Cygames for how long they've had this department, but you gotta put it out of its misery... before it bites a neighbor.

Was kind of interested but this kills a lot of potential appeal.

Unless you tell me it plays equal or better than Monster Hunter since I've been in a huge MonHun kick for a while now, it's definitely falling off the radar.

Localization pisses me of and just makes me more inclined to play in moon runes if story is so bare anyway.

I'll be giving it a rare TRUE and HONEST review depending on how lazy I feel after picking it up. I'll be assessing its story primarily on whether a new person can pick it up and understand it, and whether it's just bad and/or revised slop since I have some knowledge of Granblue.

I'll be keeping most game comparisons to Monster Hunter World since that's the one I have the most experience in and is mechanically a direct competitor.

It pains me to see that the localizers took "creative liberties" of such an anticipated title. Hopefully AI translation hits market soon.

Gacha gamers care more about the story than most, because niggas will unironically put up with Chinkglish walls of text that's 90% filler and easily avoided melodrama and then pretend it's God's gift to man. I'd know, I used to play Arknights. I also play mobile Granblue occasionally, but I still found it kinda hard to give a shit about the story in Relink, other than seeing it as a vehicle to get fun setpieces going, at which I'd say it succeeds, and doesn't drag on, thank God.

Not the circles I've witnessed, but I guess it varies. It's funny you mention Arknights because I know a lot of people that just skip the story now because it drags on way too long for each cutscene, they just get a synopsis later on.

Well, I eventually got my copy of it. Progress might be a little slow before final review because I've got responsibilities in life.

I will say that in the 30 odd minutes I got to play, the localisation is definitely a problem. I haven't heard it against the cursed dub version, but it's very obviously not a 1:1 translation.

Case in point: A crewmember - Rackam - is talking to a dock worker about parking the ship nearby. Lyria suddenly interjects upon approach. The sub says, "Rackam! Hi!" when the VA says, "Rackam-san! Ano...", indicating she actually didn't know what to say next after realising the interruption and felt awkward.

There's actually quite a lot of this, albeit subtle. In the same conversation, Rackam has things written like, "There's that smile!" when it's probably closer to an expression like, "Yes, yes!". Likewise, Lyria's VA simply says, "Thank you very much" where the sub reads, "Thanks for making me feel better".

Some of it might seem nitpicky, but multiple small changes like that can have a snowballing effect. The sub is still useful for giving the non-moonspeakers like me an idea of what's being talked about, but I wouldn't trust the specific context.

The average gachafag is a subhuman who calls themselves a gamer, when all they are playing is a glorified visual novel with "words words words" as a story. Their standards are super fucking low that they will accept anything, criticism be damned.
