Here's the news of the Government Shutdown as of 1/22/19

It's been a month now since this shutdown started which started back in December and no deal seems to be coming.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...day-32-as-democrats-vow-to-reject-trump-offer

"The longest government shutdown in U.S. history entered its 32nd day on Tuesday with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expected to call up legislation to advance a proposal from President Donald Trump, which Democrats have already said they’ll reject.

The president said in a Jan. 19 speech he would support a mix of immigration-related proposals in exchange for $5.7 billion to build a wall or other barriers along the border. Trump’s supporters, including Vice President Mike Pence, pointed to the offer as evidence of the president’s willingness to strike a compromise with Democrats.

Pelosi’s Democrats, meanwhile, plan more votes of their own in the House to reopen the government, with a new offer of $1 billion for border upgrades -- but not a wall -- on tap this week.

I've always wondered what sane people who are against the wall think we should do about the flood of illegals. It's not like I haven't asked either, but every time the response I get is some open borders goodbye sovereignty refugees welcome insanity, or a "well I agree something has to be done but the wall is dumb and pointless and won't help and people will tunnel under it and swim around it and pole jump it and and and" cop out.
Regardless of whether you think a wall is an effective barrier or not, (in which case I'm sorry you live in a tent city) it was the cornerstone of his campaign, he has to get it done, otherwise in a year or so the Democrats will point to it and say he's a liar, he can't do shit. So he has to do it.

And the Democrats desperately want no wall, not out of brick, or wood, or straw, because it will be likely one of the major points of attack against his campaign next run.

Considering all the other shit Trump has straight up lied about, why should this be the straw that breaks the camel's back?

Can somebody explain why adults who work for the government and receive all sorts of other cushy benefits have to wait in soup lines? Money management 101: have a few months worth of expenses in liquid cash and invest the rest because you never know when you might have an emergency. Plus light googling of pics, everybody in the food lines seems to be schlubby white guys in DC.

Anecdotal but I talked with a guy who has been out of work because of the shutdown. He can’t buy a new TV for the super bowl but he’s been spending more time with his kids.

They're probably mortgaged and leveraged to the hilt, sure in the knowledge their job.gov will never go away and they are nigh unfireable.

But they never foresaw...

:trump:

As opposed to the fair and balanced coverage Trump has gotten not declaring the emergency? And ultimately, the end result is the same. If he can't get it done, he can't get it done. How can he survive the debates for his reelection? "I will build the wall... this time for sure guys!" And all Democrats need to respond with, and they will is "Remember when you caved like a loser to us during the shutdown? We will never let the wall happen!"

I thought the Democrats were pushing the "those poor people on food stamps and government workers, so mean Trump" now it's "ha Trump is a pussy!". The only thing it makes them look like is opportunistic backstabbers who use whatever group they need as a political tool.

Considering all the other shit Trump has straight up lied about, why should this be the straw that breaks the camel's back?

I don't really follow, I keep having the media tell me that he's this massive liar, but then I go to investigate and it's found the media have been the liars.

Cause the media is showing you the worst cases in the country to get you to jump on the "orange man bad" train.

Certain people in this thread are trying really hard to pretend that this is a disaster for Trump politically.

Last time I checked, this cease to the government shutdown was temporary, only lasting three weeks, and if negotiations aren't settled (presumably for the wall), then it's government shutdown time again, with an added bonus of state of emergency.

The wall is coming, come hell or high water. It's just a matter of time.

I bet that people who are intelligent enough to know how to effectively save enough money to go without work for a quarter generally don't end up working in the types of positions that would be affected by this.

I look at this, and I just say: Fuck it. I give up. The rest of the country's given up on life, we're that old sick dog that doesn't even resist when the needle goes in our neck, might as well just accept death through our clouded, cataract filled eyes.

Uh, at the moment there is no wall, just a bunch of Democrats crowing. Sure, they can shutdown again in three weeks, but for the time being the Democrats have won the battle .

If and when Trump gets his wall, he will have won the war. But for the time being he has got shit, and no guarantees about the futuef

America would be better off if there was a vote of no confidence model with the congress.

It would give more power to the presidency but thats a good thing.

The media sure has disgraced itself as of late.

It's the same problem teachers have. With techers, they start in school, spend 12 years there, then four years in school at university, then the rest of their career in a school, where they are (or rather should be) the smartest person in the room. It's a career trajectory which basically comes with built in intellectual and self-sufficiency blinders. Same with a lot of government jobs.

I'd argue that the losses dems suffered from publicly throwing tantrums and being unwilling to negotiate the budget over just $5bn can and will be harmful to them in the next election cycle. By pushing Republicans further and further away like this I can definitely see a pendulum shift to the right coming soon.

And the way they sob endlessly over furloughed employees while at the same time scoffing at the working class in so called "flyover states" for not "moving where the work is" won't help win votes, either. Like playing chess with a pigeon...

When Trump finally leaves office to be replaced by whichever Dem Turbosped had enough oppression points, should I start drinking heavily again or should I just skip straight to heroin or meth?
