Latency will always be a problem. The only solution is to have a 100% fiber-optic structure in the whole world and servers in every city, even in bumfuck nowhere.

Sure, it is going to be a reality in 2100 or so, but until there streaming for gaming is useless.

So does anyone else get the feeling that all these new "cloud gaming" services being announced is less about competing with Stadia and more about pushing a new standard that gives corporations more money and us less control?

Same reason why downloads were pushed so hard in the 7th gen, though there was enough pushback that, today, it's actually possible to find hard copies of indie games. Not that it's a perfect fix, when there are plenty of games out there like Tony Hawk 5 that ship incomplete on-disc. But at least you get to keep your consumer rights to resell the game.

A cloud gaming exclusive means there'll be no piracy, no hacking, no modding, no resale, and no guarantee that your game will stay available, even if you paid full price and bought all the DLC. It's such a dismal concept.

The internet just keeps getting faster man. This commercial seemed absurd 20 years ago

"Our rooms have every movie ever made in every language, any time, day or night."

"How is that possible?"

"We have a hookup to a giant Plex server full of bootlegs located in Panama, because there's no way to get every studio to agree on streaming all of their media under one service."

Not to mention it makes game archival basically impossible unless you’re the developer or the owner of the service.

Yup, the future of vidya sure is looking bright...(:_(

Oh my god when you put it like that streaming games will fucking suck.

I really do think the high latency and inaccessibility to anyone without a fast connection will kill it. I was getting antcy about the future of video games back in '09. Think about that era: Microsoft pushing Kinect motion cameras, with the marketing saying controllers were obsolete. Soybloggers saying portables were dead, with the future of portable gaming being all on smartphones. The runaway success of the Wii. Even Playstation pushing the Move, which just kinda dwindled and disappeared. Then, as it turned out, the most exciting thing to come out of gaming this entire decade was the Nintendo Switch: a portable with traditional controls that uses game cartridges. Kinect is long-since dead and flat-out officially abandoned, Playstation used Move as a part of PSVR, which is muddling along (though closer to dead than not), and Nintendo only uses motion controls when they're absolutely necessary.

Think about how restrictive internet access is in any kind of living situation with many people, like college dorms or military barracks. Heavily firewalled, slow wifi that's rarely updated, shared among tons of people. Shit like that. Yeah, you'll get your 4k 60fps if you live alone in a suburb in a metropolis, but it's just one of those things where there are way too many situations where the whole thing will just break down.

PC's the only platform that's ever successfully gone all-digital, but PC also, still to this day, does require a bit of computer savviness to use. It might sound strange to someone whose online enough to read this, but it really is a bizarre thought to the layman that a $400 laptop at Walmart can't play GTA5 at all, while a $200 PS4 can - let alone, how a $2000 Macbook Pro might not be able to play GTA5 either. One day, Trent tried to install GTA5 onto his laptop, only to find that he didn't have the right computer to play it. He asked online about what kind of computer could play GTA5, and someone offered to meet him at the mall to sell him a rig with a Titan GPU in exchange for anus. Trent agreed and met him at the mall, and the man SLAMMED his PENIS inside of Trent's ANUS. He did this in the middle of the mall where all could see, and a security guard tried to stop him. "Stop! You've violated the law!" said the security guard. "Anus?" Trent asked the security guard. The security guard's face turned bright red and knew he couldn't resist Trent's anus, and SLAMMED his PENIS inside of trent's ANUS. Trent went home and installed GTA5 and played it. the end

Ahh, I had this exact experience when I first tried to play Team Fortress 2 on an old desktop computer, and was slapped in the face with 2 fps gameplay. That was the day I started doing research on gamer pcs and learned just how important it is to have the right PC parts.

A number of legacy titles that were previously promised as part of the Stadia "launch window" are currently not included in Google's list of 2019 Stadia releases. Those include:
  • The Crew 2
  • Destroy All Humans
  • Doom (2016)
  • The Elder Scrolls Online
  • Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid
  • Superhot
  • Windjammers 2
A handful of other unreleased titles that were promised for the Stadia launch window have simply been delayed into 2020. Those include:

  • Orcs Must Die 3 (timed Stadia exclusive)

Stadia did a reddit AMA, feels lie it's mostly shills.

Kotaku collated some missing features info from the AMA
  • Stream Connect, State Share, and Crowd Play, the main features that allow players to join in one another’s games and make Stadia more than just glorified remote play. “I expect the first game with Stream Connect to launch by the end of the year,” said Andrey Doronichev, Stadia’s director of product. “The games that support State Share and Crowd Play will be released next year.”
  • Stadia’s achievement system. The service will still record when you hit various milestones in games, but you won’t actually get notifications for them or see them displayed anywhere until “shortly after launch.”
  • The ability to use existing Chromecast Ultras to play games. At launch, only the Chromecast Ultras that ship with Stadia controllers will have the updated firmware required to stream games. “We will be updating the existing CC Ultra’s over the air soon after launch,” Doronichev said.
  • Family sharing. While parents will be able to control what their kids can access on their accounts, multiple people in the same house won’t be able to share games on the service until later on. “But it’s a high priority feature, we’re planning to launch early next year,” Doronichev said.
  • Buddy Passes. Founders Editions of Stadia are supposed to come with “buddy passes” so that people can give a friend a three-month Stadia subscription to play games with them, but those passes won’t actually be sent out until weeks after launch. “You’ll get your Buddy Pass about two weeks after you receive your bundle, barring some unknown unknowns popping up (never happens ????),’ said Beri Lee who works on Stadia’s game publishing side.
  • The Stadia controller, at least for some people. Everyone who pre-ordered Stadia will get their codes to sign onto the service starting November 19 and will be able to play on their phones or Chrome desktop browser with a keyboard and mouse. However, the packages containing the controllers and Chromecasts will have staggered shipping, sent out in the order pre-orders were received. “I ordered my Stadia Founder’s Edition in June and my delivery date says November 20-21,” Lee said, offering an example. Another person commenting on the AMA said they currently had an estimated ship date of late November, early December. “[M]oving atoms is a bit more complicated and less predictable than moving bits,’ Doronichev said. “So the actual delivery date will depend on the mail truck, traffic lights, etc.”

Actually there is a demographic that would benefit from streaming: Third world countries like Brazil.

Their import taxes make consoles so ridiculously expensive the Sega Genesis is still popular there (they are still made inside the country).

Given gamers there often being screwed by taxes, crime, and lack of customer support, realistically many only have access to cheap android phones. Sony has been making consoles inside that ountry as a loophole, however.

So, Stadia, and xcloud, could be the only way they would be able to afford to play console exclusive games without getting screwed by taxes.

...Yet Google ignored all of those and started with rich countries that, as everyone has already said, already have much better alternatives like Pc gaming and literally all consoles like the switch. So they have already missed the market that would actually kill to have access to cloud gaming.

Holy shit, there are launching with only 12 games and three of them are Tomb Raider (+Just Dance 2020, lmao). They're missing a bunch of firmware and features too? They need to delay this, badly.

Microsoft is going to eat Google's lunch if they don't - Gamepass has a much bigger library and a much bigger feature list at a much lower price.

I deleted my other post as I think I didn't explain my self well, but I think there's actually a market where cloud gaming makes a lot of sense, that being third world countries.

Realistically in many of those, many people only have access to cheap Chinese phones and old laptops for gaming. It's mostly those import taxes that screw them and make consoles and games even more expensive. Say Brazilians, who still play the sega Genesis, and have had companies make consoles inside the country as a loophole.

As of 2015, the ps4 had a $1500 price tag. And Nintendo just said "screw it" and decided not to bother and sell them consoles.

So I can see them wanting cloud gaming, but Google just ignored them given they are just trying to appeal to rich countries where people actually have much better options for portability including using a Nintendo Switch.

You know what the Google Stadia needs to be a winner? GENDER NEUTRAL CONTROLLERS. OF COURSE.

Google is selling 'gender-neutral' controllers to appeal to women

5:58 p.m.

Google hopes to get a competitive edge in the gaming industry by appealing to women with its new game service, Stadia.

"Some of our historical competitors in the console space have been a bit more masculine and a bit more mechanical in their approach," Phil Harrison, Google VP and head of Stadia, said in an interview with CNN Business. In designing new hardware, Google is trying to go "gender-neutral" by selling controllers in three colors: white, black or "Wasabi green," reports CNN. Director of design, Isabelle Olsson explained to CNN that the green color was particularly chosen because "both men and women gravitated towards this color."

CNN notes that the strategy is different compared to other gaming services such as Microsoft's Xbox controller "which comes in colors like electric blue or firetruck red," but also mentions that Google isn't the first to take a gender-neutral approach as Nintendo previously made the Switch Lite in bright colors like turquoise and yellow to appeal to all genders as well.

But color isn't the only design choice meant to appeal to women. In a behind-the-scenes video, Google industrial designer Jason Pi said the controllers will also be designed especially "for small and large hands so it's super usable for a large segment of gamers that aren't always appreciated." Stadia is set to release on November 19 to gamers of all gender. Ramisa Rob

How fucking high do you have to be to even go as far as to do something like twist game controller color options into a fucking gender equality statement? Do they really think customers go "God i sure do love that instead of just masculine colors like red or blue we got the gender neutral green controller." ? The whole point of having controller color options is just to have aesthetic variety without having to resort to painting the damn things, isn't it? I have too many fucking questions here.

It doesn't work. You have to buy games on Stadia.

Brazil is no different than Russia or eastern Europe. You have two options: piracy or steam sale.

And I'm not even going to talk about internet infrastructure, this shit is slow here, bro.

Fun fact: this tarriff dates back to the '80s when the Brazilian givernment thought that they qould be able to develop a strong domestic microcomputer computer industry. Of course, with technology of that era, being a Portugese speaking country is a pretty big disadvantage, but that didn't stop them.

You know what the Google Stadia needs to be a winner? GENDER NEUTRAL CONTROLLERS. OF COURSE.

These are the same colours as every Pixel phone generation: black, white, random pastel colour. There was even rumour of the Pixel 4 having a mint green option.

The Pixel's colours were always a more masculine choice compared to Apple's silver, white, and (rose) gold.

So when the designers say the Stadia's colours are gender neutral they probably don't mean in the way this journalist thinks.

Similarly on the big/small hands debate isn't the criticism of the Playstation controllers often that they're too small? It's not women complaining about big controllers.

Xbox has a thing where you can pay extra money and order a controller with whatever color/design combinations you want, but you'll only see black/white/red/blue controllers if you look at the first page of Best Buy's selection of Xbox controllers.

And Google has... green. They're trying to wrap up the lack of color choices as a good thing by saying it's gender inclusive. lolwut. So it's a stealth Stadia advertisement. CNN is fake news.

Oh good, a console made by the gender communists.

Yeah, that'll move numbers. Towards its competitors.

And going by how well Stadia looks to do and how well the XBone did last gen, no consumerbase.

Because not even the mouth-breathing fucktards who will mindlessly consume product can't see how hard they're getting fucked on this.

Is this thing still coming out? Since none of the ads have even stated an actual release date.

No it’s still coming out. It releases tomorrow! Are you ready for stadia? It’s the future! Probably. Maybe. I dunno.
