"Oh boy, a defense section, hopefully my pyro/anemo team doesn't have trouble with the enemies that generate a lot of dendro immediately around the defense point, and burn it to death."
I was so happy to have pulled Venti from the character pool immediately before that stage, mostly because it really annoyed the other people in my group also trying Imaginarium.
Wuthering Waves has a similar game mode, and despite it also being pretty janky, it works way better. Mihoyo should have just returned the favor and stolen wholesale from them.
I am honestly disappointed they didn't bring that back for the current patch as that was pretty neat despite the oddities and the rush to level a character to the point where you could use them without getting oneshot. Hopefully we'll see it return soonish as WW needs anything to keep it from getting smothered by the competition in the immediate future.

Does anyone here plan to check Zenless zone zero too when it release July 4? It's a hoyo game but it reminds me of Honkai impact 3 which i did not like for many reasons.

There are also leaks and the cast is looking like 1/10 human male to female ratio with coomer designs that i have near zero interest in.

I've already got it preloaded; I feel like I should at least take a look and see what it's like. I couldn't stand Honkai Impact 3 at all as it was way too mobile game for my tastes so I see myself quickly bailing if ZZZ is more of the same. Going in nearly blind since I haven't looked at any of the promotional material/advertisements/clips/footage or anything.

Today was spent seeing what changed in The First Descendant since the technical test last year, which is basically Destiny mixed with a lot of Warframe. As it's mostly a shooter it's not really a competitor for WW/Genshin/ZZZ and such, but it is something else drawing attention at least for the moment.

I'll give ZZZ a look, but probably won't play it much beyond checking out the story. Genshin and HSR already eat up too much of my time as it is.

I will give it a shot since they are giving a shit ton of free pulls for pre-registering. WuWa has kind of lost it's luster but seems to have similar gameplay (The whole switch in/out mechanic)

Few characters look cool enough for me wanna to try out, Belobog and Victorian House.
I guess may as well posting these for some resource, currency and terminology comparison. Or at least not feeling too weird in menu navigation. Prydwen has more information on fighting styles, specialties and element effects.

The new area is kinda neat, but I agree. I'm spending less time on it. I did get the new character and her weapon in under 40 pulls, which was great. I've never had that good luck before.

I played ZZZ up to level 5 account, i really didnt like it. It feels like the game is pure raw button mashing and even if i can see the strats being developed i dont like it. I think the "optimal play" will always be the same exact mash with stunner -> switch to support -> switch to attacker -> reset and parry/dodge when the enemy attacks.

It also runs bad on my pc even with all graphics on low.

I'm a bit glad tho, i already play Star rail and snowbreak so i really rather not play a third gacha.

Is HSR worth playing as a “normal” game to consoom the story? I have no intention of playing it seriously e.g. logging in every day and aiming for endgame content but the premise kind of tickles my interest. Is it easy to get situated and play through the story hyper-casually or should I just stick to watching lore videos on YouTube?

ZZZ is alright and runs surprising well with the best description I can think of how to describe the overall feel is "smooth". That said it has a much lower focus on time spent in combat compared to what I normally play. I might play it a bit on the side, maybe 5-10 minutes a day but I don't see it becoming something I sit down and play for an hour or two and the apparent lack of co-op disappoints me. The in-engine cinematics are pretty neat and I like the comic book style of storytelling but it's much more a mobile game than Genshin is with non-story missions being in and out rather quickly.

Also, it looks like WW brought back the rougelite event with adjusted difficulty levels so hopefully that'll be fun to play through again.

You can play it as a single player jrpg and ignore the hardcore endgame like my brother does, at most you need to spend a few days auto battling resource mines to level up your people and farm at least passable gear to clear the story. It's very high budget, extremely deep for a "two button game", soundtrack is godtier and has a lot of content if you play it as a "free game".

The real trick is that the game is just FUN so you want to have more characters for FUN and variety and that's when the gacha/FOMO becomes hard to ignore.

Oh you liked Aventurine at the story? He is a strong unit and a fun character that enables more team comps. Well i bet you want to roll for him now dont you? But for that you need premium currency. To get premium currency and for that i need to log daily and do events. And then if you want to use him you need to farm some decent gear for him. And then you liked this new character. Now you have to do all that again...

You see how things snowball right? Dont play this if you can't control your wallet lol.

It came back today, with new mechanics and changes.

Tried ZZZ for the afternoon, it just didn't grab me. Comic cutscenes are pretty cool, some of the character designs are good. I'm a simple man. I like battle maids, and I like talking bears. Combat just feels bad to me. Feels like there's no weight to it. I mash X a million times, do a parry-swap when prompted, some flashy cut-in animations try to give me epilepsy, and the enemies barely react. I hate the UI. It feels like it's trying to out-Persona the Persona games. It took me a stupidly long time to find anything in the menu, including the option to log out. I'll just stick to Genshin, that's enough of a time sink for me already.

ZZZ so far, it's okay, but I may have to give it more time, at least getting higher world (Inter-Knot) level. I'm at World level 21 so far. Need World level 30 to unlock Shiyu Defense aka Spiral Abyss, MoC equivalent. I haven't got Weekly boss equivalent either.

Inconclusive opinions:
Currently, I have Soldier 11, she requires you to more timely input rather than smashing to get 100% uptime basic attack imbued with Fire. Or Anby uses special attack or hold attack after 3rd basic attack in a combo. A bit potential for character gameplay expression or feeling.
Game is still easy for now, so I can't really feel the "mandatory" requirement for elements and team comp yet. At least, not actually needing daze unit, all perfect dodge and assist attack-defensive build Daze gauge a lot.
Definitely needing DPS char to at least have same elemental type with another unit, support or whatever. Because elemental (anomaly) effect gauge resets to zero every time another element applies.
No artifact or relic leveling yet, it's hard to judge how effective characters are in long run.

Hollow Zone is basically Simulated Universe in HSR, pluses TV screen navigation from Combat and Exploration missions. But every unexplored TV screen you move into, you gain Pressure. Fill up a Pressure bar means a Corruption added, random debuffs to your entire team.
Hollow Zone1.png Hollow Zone2.png
The first stage, Edge. Final monster has invisibility and arena is a bit larger than usual. So your character will just lose lock on that monster every time it goes invisible. Or sometimes, like why even I bother perfect dodging or swapping assist when it's so far away from me. The final monster hurts you quite a bit, it isn't hard, it's just feel weird to fight him.

Daily stamina consumption, 240 max. I can't bother do grinding math comparison.
One coffee can be consumed per day to refill 60, may even have an additional effect, bonus leveling up material drop. Technically should be 5 times grind per day.
Coffee daily.png

VR centre, where you farm leveling up material. All in one place, so more convenient, less travelling around. If new enemy for new materials in future, should be this same place.
Leveling up.png Character Class type.png
One enemy card consume 20 stamina. Another thing I see, at least the enemy they put in specific Domain/Calyx farm have weaknesses to that specific Character Attack and Element type. Wanna farm Fire element skill points? Enemies have fire weakness. This is where I feel a lot nicer than Genshin.

VR training.png
VR training is somewhat neat. I don't know how game deciding which character Agent Academy I can pick. I don't have Ben, I can't test him yet I can test Ellen, Rina, Sousaku. Lycaon, Nekomata.
Free training, lets you just test any characters you own with a training dummy. Options like picking dummy levels, infinite energy for you, no weakened state, etc...

Criticism: Mostly on visual aspect of the game, like what Shart Attack said, it "tries hard" to be stylish. Beside menu navigation, the TV mode navigating around as going through "tile-set" dungeon-ish feels weird. It's a bit jarring transitioning between TV screens and combat gameplay, or background feels strangely numb yet annoyed.
I don't like perfect dodge and assist sometimes because of how lock on work. If some enemies come behind or ranged attack, I perfect dodge just put me far away from original target, then can even outright swapping to different target with follow up attack.
I don't think I find actual "Exit" button for the game beside Alt+F4 or "X" on window mode.
Character specific special effect, maybe it's a bit much in some cases like Anby special EX energy attack or Soldier 11 fire basic attack. I notice I miss Dodge/Assist window many times because special effect obscures flashing on enemy.

Character menu
Pic on the left, you don't see option to see character Constellation or Eidolon. For some reason, character "Story, detail" is on bottom left if you have unlocked it that is. The giant yellow-brown "Select" button on right side of the screen, have to click on it to confirm adding character to a team during mission. Clicking or double click on character rectangle slot does nothing. That "Select" button will also change colour based on character main colour theme.

Pic on the right, there it is, the Constellation or Eidolons now is on bottom left. But the good thing here is you can even checking out Un-owned characters stat and skill easily without having to go to like "Character Archive" whatever to see.
Character menu1.png Character menu2.png

Last one, not on visual. Sometimes when there are like two NPCs standing near each other. Game can kinda have a hard time for you deciding which one you wanna talk to. There can be also a bit delay (dialogue box) after pressing interact with world named NPC.

It was apparently worse originally and this is post beta feedback somehow. I remember the blog board used to be worse and there was no way to tell what blogs were actual missions, now they are blue. I dont understand how the menu is 95% of the screen of your character posing watching their phone instead of useful info. The character menu is bad too.

Now look at how much more convenient and clean the Star rail UI is. It tells ou all you need to know.

1720159695165.png
1720159382356.png (You can see stats, skills and weapon on the same screen unlike zzz)

But in ZZZ it's like trying to hard to be persona nonsense.

-You can't fucking switch between one chosen character to another, you have to return to the list.
-You can't hover a character or switch tabs without them going "FUCK YEA ITS ME!" and doing a bunch of spins and flips, like the player is a child with low atenttion span.
-There is no "Level up button". You have to be told about the green arrow and i forgot.
-"Skills" is actually the place where constelations/eidolons are, i thought they were skill trees.
-Weapon is just terrible to navigate cause they're all randomass coloured balls.

People will get used to it eventually but weird that hoyo, who has proven to make great UI already, are putting presentation over clarity.

ZZZ UI is genuinely horrible, so much visual clutter with out actually saying anything, it's just busy, for no reason.

The overworld is really quite nice. Liking that.

TV mode between active battle sequences has got to be one of the worst things I've experienced in gaming recently, truly terrible.

Combat I'm still to pass judgement on, I'm doing story still and I know Hoyo caters to toddlers in that regard.

Currency is scummy even by Hoyo standards. This is a wait and see for me. Visually, amazing though.

I do think this game would be getting absolutely booty blasted by negative reviews in the Gacha community if it did not have Hoyo shield. Very disappointed by this one. (For what it's worth I like Genshin and HSR quite a lot, so it's not like I hate the company.)
