I didn't manage to get a new sword for Ayaka, but I did get Shenhe's spear, so I'll probably start using her. My current big damage team is Kokomi/Yelan/Ayaka/Eula and Eula is not really useful there apart from providing second Cryo for resonance. Shenhe would work better there, but first I need to go back to the artifact grind.

For some reason I've been thinking about giving this game a try. A few questions:

So luckily, I just (basically) started this game recently and can provide some perspective as a new-ish player

General estimate, how long does it take to get from the very beginning to end of current content?
I've been playing a few hours a day every day for about 3 weeks now and I'm only just getting to the 'current' area of the game in the story. Now I don't advance my story quests every day but I do usually log in, do my dailies, and spend my resin (capped daily currency) on ascension materials to keep my characters leveled up. So YMMV. Keep in mind that a lot of content is gated by account level and the most efficient way to increase your account level is to spend time doing quests (both daily and otherwise) so my timetable is probably not too far from where it would actually take as a player starting now to reach current content.

Is this believed to be like tiktok? I.e. spyware for china and a notable security risk?
The game's anticheat is absurdly strong and has ring 0 access on your PC (equivalent to a device driver or your firewall). I would not recommend putting this on a PC you do actual sensitive work on at all. I don't particularly think mihoyo is a malicious actor but who knows what kind of third-party shit might exploit the Genshin anticheat.

If you have a PS4/PS5, I'd say play it on that (I play it on PS5 and it looks incredible). If you must play on PC, then just be aware of what's happening. AFAIK the anticheat doesn't run while the game isn't running but who knows.

I've heard that characters are sometimes available and sometimes not. Can they be permanently missed, or can you 'get everyone' if you hang around long enough?
There's a roster of characters that are always available on the general banner, but most characters only become available when their time-limited banner is running. Theoretically you can be locked out of a certain character forever but pretty much all of them (except Aloy from the SNOY tie-in) have reruns roughly once per year. I would definitely not recommend going into Genshin with the idea of collecting all the characters because that's a good way to make yourself broke. Find characters you like, save your gachabux for them, and whale hard when they appear.

About how much real life cash do you have to drop to get a relatively normal experience from the game?
Zero dollars. You can entirely F2P and it's not even particularly difficult to do so. Money can make certain things a little bit faster, give you access to more characters, and can buy you the BiS weapons for characters (don't do this last bit it's a scam), but all of the content in the game is easily completeable without spending a dime. Money also won't really buy you power - there's certain things you'll have to grind by playing the game to make your characters not shit regardless of how much you spend.

Does this follow the mmo paradigm where 'past' content is relatively easy to go back and complete/obtain with current stuff?
Not really. Your character level cap, weapon level cap, and available content is tied to your account level and your account level affects your 'world level.' World level governs how strong shit is in the overworld in pretty much all of the areas. So as you advance, the enemies gain more stats and levels with you. The major difference is that if you build your characters as you progress, you'll have way more options and so the game will 'feel' easier because you'll be doing bursts more often, critting more often, etc.

How strict is the meta/learning curve, specifically while progressing through the game(as opposed to an endgame meta)? Can you just play with the characters you like or do you need to look up a min/max setup to not have bad time?
The basic rule while progressing is to find a main DPS you like, get them an alright 3* weapon (a 4* weapon would be ideal) that works for them, and funnel all your resources into that character and weapon. For the rest of your team, fill it with supports and level them up as you can (keeping them around 10 levels behind your current level cap is fine while you're initially progressing). Don't build more than one DPS and don't try to min/max - the game will fuck you up.

If you get enough currency, the upcoming banner has a pretty good support to wish on (Nahida) and there's a high probability you'll get some other characters while wishing for her. Also the game will give you free characters from the story as well as just by hitting certain milestones and I recommend picking all of them up (especially Xiangling who is a fantastic off-field character).

In terms of difficulty - if you focus-build a main DPS to carry you and a support or two to complement them, then the game is actually pretty easy to progress through. You can unga-bunga a lot of content. Personally, I've been following the shark man's guide to progression, and it's gotten me where I need to be to completely destroy the content.

Descriptions for Kirara's skills/passives/constellations were leaked. Can't share because this phone hates me, but just from the descriptions given, she sounds fun to play and I want her.

kirara looks very cute! also, i've read that she's supposed to be an expy of pardofidelis (sp?) from honkai, interesting.

welp, literally got Nahida on my first 10-pull

Maybe I could pull for constellations?

EDIT: Decided to go for broke - no nahida constellations, but C3 Layla, a sacrificial sword, another widsith, and a stringless are all really solid things to add to my account so I can't be too upset.

As for now the game has reached Sumeru content, so you'll have a lot things to do for months, if not a year or two.

Unfortunately, yes.
I've heard that characters are sometimes available and sometimes not. Can they be permanently missed, or can you 'get everyone' if you hang around long enough?
FUMO is always expected on Gacha games. So only get specific characters you really want to get to beat the games easier. Help yourself with https://genshin.gg/ and try look other guides for collectibles, route for daily artifacts farming, etc.

The purchase on monthly subscription for daily paid in-game currency is highly recommended to secure ultimate items / characters better. Paying basic battle pass to get better weapon is optional but still helpful to gather more level up materials, but only buy it once you have maxed the battle pass tier progress. If you still wanna go F2P method, it could take months if not a year or two to get most stuff the game has to offer. This includes to catch up with new contents in the future.

Back in old days of Honkai Gakuen and Honkai Impact, MiHoYo used to be very generous at giving free stuff, the grinds in general, and the gacha was a lot more forgiving. Sadly, the MiHoYo today is the opposite I've mentioned. So be ready to be disappointed a lot often in case they're about to do more fuck ups (Recycled or filler events, "No fun allowed" nerfs, petty giveaways during another anniversary or seasonal events, and so on).

MiHoYo had bad history for not bother to fix bugs as the game gets more patches to the point the game becomes completely unplayable on actual devices. When this happens, you have to play it on emulator to fix it, at least for my experience with Honkai Gakuen.

Kirara's main deal is that her hold skill will literally morph her into a "box cat" that you can control to jump and run on walls lol

Her tap skill is a decent 12s dendro shield and her burst is a bomb that leaves dendro mines. She's unlikely to be op or anything since her dendro application looks low but she seems fun for exploring. Her personal passive is the same as aloy so you can farm meat easily with her too.

Holy shit, Nahida is broken as fuck. I don't even have her leveled and the dendro application alone is allowing Keqing to absolutely annihilate enemies.

She's mostly "broken" because every other dendro unit has glaring issues, especially 4*s

Collei: long skill animation, bad energy generation, 60 cost small burst circle, gimped ICD
Traveler: deceptively short range skill, bad energy, 80 cost burst that removes itself if pyro, gimped icd
yaoyao: has to choose between healing or application, long skill cd, 80 cost burst requires field time and moving (cant attack for xinqiu)

Even kirara will only apply dendro on her box form by touching enemies and the burst mines meaning kirara cannot use xinqiu or yelan to play hyperbloom.

Playing any dendro comp with Nahida is just EASY MODE compared to everyone else, you just press E and leave or stay attacking. While alhaitham is technically stronger nahida is simply more convenient and ALSO the best dendro support.

Now imagine her C2 when she can crit on those reactions

Note that the crit is technically a fixed ratio of 20% chance to deal double damage (+100%) which on average is 20% more dps, wuile quicken reduces 30% defense. It's an extremely strong con sure but its not a normal crititical hit that scales with her own stats. There is no c2 in the game that improves the WHOLE TEAM dps like this but nahida is so strong by default that this clearly exists to be bait like Raiden's c2.

I've been thinking on returning to the game, last I played I mainly used Keqing, Hu Tao, Noelle and Xingqiu (not that I lack other characters). So what's new with the meta? Is the current banner any good? I'm more in need of a good supporter after never investing in the 5 star ameno characters.

Nahida is probably one of the best units in the game right now. Dendro reactions are overpowered to hell and she is the queen of them.
Nilou is a niche unit, she makes dendro cores explode bigger and better, but they hurt you as well.

The next banner has Baizou (finally) and a Ganyu rerun

Of the 4*'s, Kuki is an electro healer that makes hyperbloom (Dendro + Hydro + Electro) very easy and very tasty.
Layla is a cryo shielder that people say is good, I've just never used her.
Dori is the other elecro healer that no one uses because she isn't kuki.

I got Tighnari at the coin toss (I'll never get Jean ): ). Now I'm not sure if to go again for Nahida or wait to Ganyu. Is Tighnari good against bosses like the sky dragon? Because I mainly want Ganyu against it.

Get Nahida. If you are still early enough that Stormterror is a concern, Primo's will be flowing like a river by just doing quests and world exploration. As more characters are added, the longer the time between their reruns are, so she may not come back for a long time. She really is that good.

Tig is the Dendro Ganyu, I personally find him fun to play. (Though being a Ganyu main my first year and a half of the game may color my opinion a bit)

The big problem for early game players like yourself is leveling/ascending characters. Every character this banner requires Sumeru/Inuzuma materials to ascend, which won't happen for you for a good bit.

Tighnari is surprisingly good to the point i'd argue he's the "strongest" standard character (sorry diluc) but he's a one trick pony that only excels at quick spread dmg so he's not a universal dendro enabler like nahida so you should get her.

Tighnari is still great at ranged flying bosses provided you apply electro on them too. I just tested right now with tigh/nahida/raiden/zhongli against Dvalin and i killed it in less than 30 seconds the moment it touches the ground but that's an easy boss anyway. Against Electronid Bat and geo wold i can also confirm he's great.

I'll just make it clear that tighnari is defnitely not "Dendro Ganyu" and it's worth having both too. Tighnari's skill dizzies enemies and makes his charges faster so he requires minimal setup and opportunity, while ganyu is only charging against slow bosses and CC'd enemies.

tl;dr: Train tighnari and get nahida, if you can spare gems and have no cryo 5* get ganyu too.

Just finished Sumeru act II and all I have to say is...

Wow, I didn't know the Genshin devs were such big fans of Haruhi. They even included a homage to Endless Eight. Seriously though, shit has been pretty bonkers. This is probably the first time I've found the archon-related parts of the archon quest more interesting than Khaenri'ah kino with Dain.

Overall, the Sumeru plot seems better written overall with fewer weakpoints. Hell, the Golden Slumber questline with Jeht is legit pretty good. It's nice seeing them try to improve the story writing.
