Can you play it without paying for anything?
You absolutely can, easily. You're just at the mercy of luck and limited resources as far as unlocking characters.

Speaking of which, usually F2P players will save all their gacha currency they earn from game rewards for months on end just to try and get their favorite waifus. Only to not get them when they come out and throw a crybaby fit on twitter over it.

Search "Ayaka" on twitter over the next few days when you get a chance if you want to see this in action. I highly recommend it.

Either this chick is trolling or she's really that brazen about sharing her weeb delusions with the world. Holy shit.
I hope her mother isn't seeing what that ring is being used for. Engagement rings passed down are really special and for it to be wasted? My heart breaks.

Yeah you really don’t have to pay for anything in this game, they give you fairly good characters for free (Barbara, Kaeya, Lisa, Xiangling, Amber, geo/anemo traveler) and you get 4 star characters pretty regularly from the rolls you can do with the primos you earn being f2p. The only thing you have to theoretically pay for is if you’re wanting multiples of a 5 star, or if you just have shit luck rolling for the 5 star waifu you want. It’s completely possible to enjoy the game and have a cracked team completely free to play. What people pay for is 90% guaranteeing they get their waifu/husbando and 10% people paying for a cracked weapon.
Yeah pretty much. The only characters I really wanted were Diluc and Childe. I did the early reroll thing to end up with Diluc and Keqing, and then saved up and got Childe with free pulls so it all works out. Though, it is rather annoying that some of the bonuses you get from multiples make characters ABSURDLY stronger. If I had gotten like 2 more Dilucs he would've been highest tier DPS in the game but because that is a pipe dream for f2p, he was just pretty good. But, again, all content and all so not that big a deal.

Hopefully they haven't added any paywalls or whatever since I stopped playing. Think I stopped shortly after the uh, ice mountain came out.

I don't get this part. The game's gacha system will eventually relent the desired gold painted 5* after one flings enough rolls (160-180max) at it. Are you saying there are people are dumber than DSP when it comes to gacha games ?

Saving up is hard for them when new banners come out every month and the fandom likes to hype up every single new character as being the bestest ever. Saw someone spend all of their primos they’d saved up for months trying to get Zhongli and they didn’t get them even in the 130 rolls they did.

180 rolls is also a lot for this game; the gacha currency is extremely expensive and time consuming to farm.

To also kind of put into perspective how expensive it is and how much money people sink into this game, spending $100 nets you 50 rolls. It takes roughly 90 rolls at max to guarantee a 5* character dropping. So that's a little under $200 if you're really unlucky.

The kicker though is that on limited time banners, you're not guaranteed to even get the featured character and may get someone from the main pool instead. The next time a 5* character is pulled after this, then you're guaranteed whoever is featured.

If you're really unlucky, that's up to $400 down the drain just to get your anime waifu once.

Not only that, but you're encouraged to pull characters multiple times. Each duplicate pull grants the character an extra bonus, and this happens up to 6 times. Do the math for the rest.

And people do actually spend that much, just in case you were wondering.

So F2P have to learn to save and spend wisely, and even after all that saving there's still a chance they can lose their chance for good if their luck is garbage.

As far as I’m concerned just playing a gacha to begin with - as a f2p or as a whale - is instant lolcow status. There is no game on Earth that is so fun that you can justify spending money ON THE CHANCE to get a new character or, Allah forbid, a skin.

True, but this sort of thing has been happening for a lot longer than people think. People have been having crushes on fictional characters since the beginning of time, really. The only difference is that people nowadays have a place to broadcast it to the entire world.
Honestly almost every problem with how people act like weirdos on the internet has been an issue since the beginning of time. Internet just made it more visible to the world.

Like cringy autistic fandoms were a thing back then too like the Sherlock Holmes fandom who famously believed Sherlock was real while also sending death threats to the author to bring him back.

I'm afraid gachas are unavoidable now if you wish to play almost any big game these days. If I remember right it all started with Team Fortress 2. Then CS:GO and Dota 2. Then everything else from EA and Co, but without a way to trade your shit with other players now. Genshin is preety good for a traditional gacha, because it actually have gameplay. Also you can just fuck around locations, pimp-slap some bitch-ass mobs. Initially I've looked into gacha games when those started to become popular, but found zero to no gameplay(with a mandatory autobattle option) and jpegs wiggling around the screen, which is supposed to represent plot scenes. The only way to escape is to play old games and indies.
Since I'm already on the topic, I consider people who alays fanatically buy the latest hardware as even bigger cows. They buy all that in order to buy a game for 60+ bux, and for what? To look at Abby in 4k HD? No, thanks.

Yeah all this gacha started with EA and FIFA 09 Ultimate team back in 2009 which the current CE0 of EA (executive producer at the time) greenlit the P2P lootbox inclusion in it which made shit ton of money and constantly grows every year . For example FIFA 2020 made $993 million from microtransactions alone while FIFA 09 made $650 million all-together. Through out the years it would be implemented to every EA sports game and other EA ips they own. Games companies being companies followed suit and implemented this as well in their own way like Valve gacha shit is all cosmetic but there was a small experiment , if you own all items in the collection it will give you a buff but got thrown out after 4 months .

interestingly valve were the first to put the hats and lootbox stuff in their games, but they also have kept a strict cosmetics-only policy so the actual gameplay is completely unaffected, and this holds true even today

I'm not gonna read all 7 pages, but I have been playing this game since October of 2020 and have a few things to add. Twitter is just fucking retarded thirsty rule34, and no one takes them seriously. There has been a huge issue with Western twitter calling Asian twitter artists "racists" for drawing Asian characters pale lol, and Asia is fed up with them. To the point many of them quit the site and now live behind paywalls. Imagine arguing over fictional characters who don't even belong to you.

The whole racist thing in Genshin, is really dumb. Because Western twitter is completely ignorant that dark skin Asians exist, and they auto self-insert them as "Black". Xinyan, and Kaeya are Asian, they are not black. Kaeya, is from the same tribe of people that the Hillichurls are (and used to be a spy), because it's lowkey confirmed that the Hillichurls are the cursed people of Khaenri'ah (They flew too close to the sun, so Celestia sent the Archons to nuke their advanced civilization). Him remaining human, probably has something to do with the eyepatch. Because Dainsleif, who is also from Khaenri'ah possesses one too (Khaenri'ah also is connected to the Abyss). Its also the reason in the Windblume festival, that Kaeya submitted his poetry in Hillichurlian.

Also, yeah they got loli characters. But like, they are not sexualized, its pedos out there sexualizing them. They have some of the most bland stories and or really boring characters. It's no different than watching a slice of life anime. Mihoyo also does to their character designs what literally any other gaming company does when they create minor characters.

Anyways, if there is one thing Genshin could do better in Gacha mechanics, is not have limited characters and just have a rate up. I've played other Gacha before, where you can get all the characters all the time. They just had banners where you are more likely to get the new one.

I dunno what kind of slice of life stuff you've been reading but last I checked the stories for at least 2 of the child characters are some wild ass backstories. One of them is a registered knight solely because they want to keep track of the kid and make sure she doesn't go blowing up another mountain after her mom taught her how to not only do that but also how to make bombs and fucked off to go exploring some foreign nation. Another one is a freak accident zombie kid thats not a mindless inhuman monster because people make sure she's getting reminded who she is and what her job is. of course, neither of these make any difference to gachafags or twitter/reddit types that seem to flock to this fucking game.

I think Diona’s backstory is funny as fuck too, a kid bartender who wants to take down the wine industry. I don’t have any issues with the backstories for any of the characters, I personally think they did a good job fleshing them all out and making them lovable.

I was mostly referring to the reaction to the characters, not specifically their backgrounds. They do have wild backstories though. In terms of anime, I find them more on the normal side, and they fit into the world just fine.

I say let people enjoy what they enjoy. I never understood people who get irritated at someone enjoying something they themselves cannot.

There is only one reason these "characters" are loved: anime. And as mentioned before, sex sells.
