Sounds like someone coming up with an excuse to purge NXT.
It's more for their Next In Line initiative. They're hiring heavily on the corporate site for coordinators and personal trainers currently, so they're definitely moving forward with this.

The most reasonable and likely scenario is they want a probationary period policy in place prior to signing any new athletes in order to save money on the front end while they're in training and to create a clause to easily release those not measuring up to the job.

For what it's worth (and it ain't much) Ciampa is on Raw and probably either got the "Theory's mercenary" gimmick you mentioned or someone let him have the Sicillian Psycho aspect back, since he attacked Mustafa Ali for no apparent reason last Monday. We'll see if they explain tonight.
To be fair, it's Mustafa Ali. One of the most annoying wrestlers on the main roster these days.

that makes sense as NXT shifts from the "don't let AEW etc hire them" Zone to an actual developmental again

Wrestling school from my understanding generally lasts 13 weeks. No disrespect to the trainees, but if you haven't even made NXT in a year, you should be cut. If for no other reason than WWE dropped the ball and genuinely has no idea what to do with you, so you should get a chance at a fresh start.

I'm all for people getting easy paychecks, but the trainees can't be getting that much, and there should be no reason to linger in developmental for 5+ years.

To be completely fair, wrestling school is just part of it. Read through Bret Hart's or Jericho's biographies and you get a sense of what they had to do to get to where they are. Even guys like Bret had to be 'Cowboy' Bret Hart and go through dumb gimmicks or make mistakes.

It's a weird dichotomy, because unlike those dudes, all of those growing pains are seen by everyone. But they kinda sorta have to start getting TV experience ASAP given how much the business has changed since Jericho and Hart were cutting their teeth.

And yeah, 5+ years is ridiculous. You look back in time to guys like Tom Magee and how they washed out more or less overnight compared to now.

Plus it also helps prevent bad PR by preventing the new signees from drawing leases to fucking houses in Florida like what happened with a few previous releases.

Probation means less of a paycheck!

The average salary for an NXT contract is roughly $80k per year. Fuck me running that's a little less than my salary.
Still better than what most people get in AEW.
If you want to split hairs here...AEW hired a 16 year old.
Negative One is also under contract. I think these are similar to what Will Ospreay and Wrestletalk did for a UK talent. Just pay for their training and stuff.

Seems like Stu Grayson has been removed from the AEW roster. There was an interview floating around last year that he had yet to sign a new contract. Shame really, the guy could go in the ring. But I've also heard he has a pretty decent business in a trade in French Canada, so if that's the case, he'll be fine.

afaik $80k a year is pretty fucking great for wrasslin
They rarely ever have to travel too so that doesn't cut into it. AEW pays for travel expenses so at least you don't have to worry about that. However you're still making less than NZT. AEW if you have a three year contract and you're mid card you're making low $100k over the course of three years.

Their roster page and even their rankings page is going through shit. Sammy is still listed as the TNT champ for instance.

I find it interesting that the made up characters in the WWE video game story modes are typically better than a lot of actual wrestlers these days.

Cole Quinn.
“Paragon” Jay Pierce.
Hector Flores.
Chase.
All of them are better than people like Dante Martin, Dominick Mysterio, Scorpio Sky, etc.

I’d honestly love to see a wrestling game like 2k22 but with all made up wrestlers. Complete with a Storyline where you can heel turn and all that and it’s not the phoned in voiceover that the real life wrestlers do where it’s stiff.
Some of the best parts of 2k22 is when you’re interacting with the made up wrestlers.
you missed the all important trend setter:

On one hand, I’m gonna miss Grayson - guy was arguably the most underrated member of the Dark Order, and whenever he got a chance in a match he was always impressive.

On the other hand, I wonder what this means for the rest of the Dark Order - my jokes about it being a Brodie Lee Memorial aside, the only ones that might be fine are John Silver and Preston Vance (both arguably the highlights of the group anyway) if all their deals run up. It’s not like AEW’s really done much with the Dark Order since aligning them with Hangman, that’s 7ish people that are basically there for BTE more than anything…

Considering Vance is a big guy and he was VERY tight with Cody, I'd not be shocked if he makes the jump to WWE. Fact AEW is still hiding his handsome face under that mask baffles me

This and the fact that he is okay with doing any gimmick is key to getting hired in WWE. He has size, ability, and flexibility.
