Damn right. Because it's the best game ever created in its genre and it's not even close. God I hope they don't fuck up XCOM 3, but after all this time I'm not optimistic.

Also I don't really consider Phoenix Point a competitor even though it tried to be, for the simple reason that it sucked donkey balls.

I'm not sure there's a "hype" around it outside a small subset of people but Project Wingman is everything you'd ever want in a modern Ace Combat game and it's actually crazy a small team created it.

It looks, plays, feels great. Just shocking the team had never made another game before it, and this was a complete passion project from them to turn out something like the Ace Combat series.

For a game that is supposedly skill based, everything seemed like luck and trial-and-error. I got up to what I think was a last boss and died, and was told that the problem was I didn't have the bible. I gave up at that point, since a game that already felt like mostly luck now required me to roll a specific item or you lose? Shit like that is why I hate roguelikes.
I get that, it pretty much is a gambling simulator. The skill based elements comes from navigating the floor hazards and "just dont get hit, easy, haha", the other side of it is the order of how you interact with a floor. Saving pickups on the ground until after you've gotten potential trinkets/items from rooms and shops that can help you snowball. It works the other way around too; picking up 1 bad item can turn a winning run into a wash. The dlcs also added a bunch new items that kind of mitigate the whole "needing x to win", some negative items can also synergize with others so you can get some value off of them. Completely understandable, though.

I think OG x-com modded is FAR better. I don't like the nu-com stuff because it feels KINDA like a card game than tactical engagement in a way.
If you are a graphics snob, or absolutely can't stand higher degrees of management, yeah you probably won't like it as much, but stuff like "x-com files" (mod) are such an amazing experience, with higher degrees of choice, tactical loadout, and possible outcomes / approaches. The fact you can strap a demolition charge to someones belt as insurance before breaching a room is something special and thats in vanilla.

Noita is one that I can say is absolutely worth the hype. Very fun game-play, unique physics, wand crafting is stellar and mod support is so good that you can objectively miss me with the "its a roguelike, I hate roguelikes" bs, since you can just mod in respawns if you REALLY hate that, or hp drops, or a mod with 200 more monsters, or play as some big fuck off space marine.

In terms of games in the last 5 or so years, its definitely a top contender. Its also 5 years old and there STILL practically full time noita streamers (who get high views), and thats a pretty good fucking indication of a games viability in my opinion.
Noita deserves kudos for having actually implemented pixel physics alone. People have been clamoring for a game with it since those old powder sandbox games and the only other title that has a semblance of it that I know of is the rough-around-the-edges (but still fun imo) Cortex Command.

In the vein of Slay the Spire is a game called Chrono Ark

Whether one enjoys the Korean imitation of a manga art style over STS's Newgrounds-era art style is up to personal preference but I found the gameplay in CA to be easier to get good at and it motivated me to continue playing by having overarching story/progression alongside the roguelite elements.

It's a shame you feel that way, Isaac has come a long way especially with Rebirth. Cool game modes, being able to break the game or hit massive power spikes, each run being different. I can understand if the art style is a bit much with the grotesque themes though.

Slay the Spire was fun for awhile, Monster Train (I'm not autistic, I swear!) was one that I found myself playing more of despite it looking like a fucking mobile game with its animations. The concept just felt like it was delivered better.

Loop Hero got quite a bit of coverage on YT but flew completely under my radar, it ended out being one of my favorite games. The pixel graphics are super nostalgic of early pc/console games. You use cards to build up the map on a run to create enemy camps, which can transform depending on the card combinations brought. Has some pretty interesting meta progressions with farming materials to build up the town. Definitely a recommend (its also on sale often).

Dead Cells lived up to it's hype.

Valheim is also one that has been insanely fun, but I might be biased because I like Norse shit and building structures/base defense. The game is somewhat in development hell, released 3 years ago with insane sales yet drip feeds minor updates and patches. Very atmospheric.

With Rogue Core on the way, I'll be surprised if season 6 ever gets released. S5 took a whole fucking year...not to mention getting them to rework some of the unused OCs is like pulling teeth.
I haven't played TBOI in years, is this image true?

Also regarding games that pleasantly surprised me for fulfilling the hype I'd vouch for Lies of P, Monster Hunter, and Vanquish.

Yeah for the most part. For anyone not in the loop, the "Chewing your steak." thing is a tweet that the dev put out previously. There was a character called The Lost that took some extremely obscure steps to unlock, like dying to a specific enemy on a specific floor holding a specific item, and it was going to be this extended ARG thing to collect hints on what to do. But instead, people just datamined the steps on day one which made him have a melty. He pretty much added a bunch of shitty items to bloat the item pool out of spite.

Slay the Spire is actually kind of like Vampire Survivors: A genre defining game that was ultimately outshined by its own clones. It's not a BAD game, but it appeals to a very, VERY specific type of interest.

Goat Simulator is trash.

Stuff that's worth the hype? XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. It's not for everybody, but it is far and away best of breed.
Roguebook is my favorite Slay the Spire clone, give it a shot.

I’m willing to argue that Smuggler’s Run for the PS2 is a fun game that should be played more. It’s basically Midnight Club, but with trying to protect drug contraband from not being taken away by the police.

Any clones you'd recommend of either game?

Not OP (and I never played Slay the Spire itself) but I sunk a lot of time into Monster Slayers from some little indie dev.

Cutesy artstyle, permadeath.

A big part of gameplay was learning how to discard the junk cards from your deck permanently so the S-tier cards cycle through more frequently.

The final boss required some good RNG though, which can be frustrating in a roguelike with only one shot after clearing a few dungeons.

I liked it so much I got 100% achievements and beat the game with all but a few loadouts on Brutal difficulty.

I never got into Terraria. Tried playing it solo, didn't see the appeal. Tried playing it co-op, and I was handed a bunch of items, then a giant monster appeared and killed me over and over. My guess is you had to be there when it was new and nobody had any gear and played each update as it released
Nah. Terraria isn't a MMO. You can grind the gear in basically any world.

Hell, if you're lazy, have your friend drop some late game gear and grind the bosses.

So it's basically Minecraft meets Castlevania/Metroid. You CAN carry items from one world to the other or just beat all the bosses in order.

Binding of Isaac was good, but it just has too much content, shitty expansions, and bad mechanics and bosses that ruin the fun.

There's a lot of trash items in pools that are simply obsolete and can even ruin a run.
Latest expansion adds these trash minigames and boring new characters.
Boss damage is cspped, good items get banned the more good itdms you get, etc.
And finally, bosses like Delirium, Husk, etc are simply boring or unfair.

Oh and greed modr. Fuck greed mode.

Into the Gungeon does everything TBOI does, 100x better. Magicraft is a recent game that is just amazing. So roguelikes can be good and fun, TBOI isn't.

Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube is the only console game I ever pre-ordered and exceeded my expectations.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory also got a ton of hype and is damn near flawless (played the Xbox version)

Already did. Here-
I played it when it was fairly new. Iirc there was only one game mode and one character.

Stuff like that is why I wanted to get into x-pirates, but it's so jank and the difficulty is insane unless you know the mod well.

Hell, if you're lazy, have your friend drop some late game gear and grind the bosses.
I think that's what happened and I had no idea what was going on.

But instead, people just datamined the steps on day one which made him have a melty.
I kinda understand. You basically can't do secrets in games anymore, at least it's harder. If Mew was under a truck in the next Pokemon game it'd be discovered and trending on Twitter before the game even officially released due to leaks. Kinda fucking sucks.

In the vein of Slay the Spire is a game called Chrono Ark
That's pretty cool, I'm gonna check it out. Hopefully it's on Switch.
