I've been ignorant of a great many things done quick, but weren't raffles like official merchandise once upon a time? Controllers, games, cells, etc.? Are the showrunners so greedy now they'll take free shit from mediocre people and charge for it?
There's still official merch offered here and there, but for the most part they've taken a great liking at using nepotism to select the artist that makes shit for the raffles, there's been good shit before made by independent artist that are the top of their field, but those charge appropriate industry prices and i think they very quickly ran out of those so they are just scrapping for the bottom of their barrel for any artist that'd be willing to be payed in exposure

This dude playing Sonic Adventure has knockers a stripper would be jealous of.
At least post proof

GDQ stopped being good after SGDQ 2014, that's when normies started to watch it and the Super Metroid bet-war started to have "save the animals" win over "save the frames." The last time I watched it a streamer called CirnoBeatsSanae told the audience to jump in front of the hotel shuttle for their disruptive HOIP calling and clapping during a Super Metroid race.

The main reason game selections for GDQ suck now is because all the interesting games have been done to death, the runs are boring/inconsistent, and not so many people run them anymore. The event isn't fun to watch with how safe it's become. Given the low viewership of this GDQ, the speedrunning well is running dry.

The money question of this charity has been a question for a very long time too. It was widely speculated that Mike Uyama ran off with a majority of the money every event he was involved in organizing. He's been gone since around 2015 but I'm sure the problem has likely only gotten worse, they haven't even had to pay to book venues since AGDQ 2020

How about we put speed aside and do a high score run of Starfox?

There are a lot of great runs from GDQ, all past sadly. And chief among them is Cosmo's explanation of the Wrong Warp Glitch in Ocarina of Time from 2013. But this fucking Star Fox 64 score run is by far my favorite. Everything about it is perfect. And what blows my mind is that if you go to speedrun.com right now and look at the page for SF64, you will notice that these dipshits only have categories for speedrunning what is ostensibly an arcade game where you're supposed to get a high score. It is offloaded to a separate website! What the hell? Speedrunning SF64 is cool. I get it. But there's no high score category? Seriously guys? It's a fucking rail shooter, you can only manipulate the game's speed so much. At least have a high score category. It's not like that would be difficult.

Anyway. Play Star Fox 64 if you have some time. It's one of the few truly perfect games ever made. But it is also very misunderstood. If you see someone complaining that the game is too short, remind them that it's an arcade-style game and you are supposed to replay it and optimize your run.

Time for the Factorio run, the schedule was switched up so it's earlier than planned. Gonna have it on in the background, both to see the game and to listen for any tranny whining.

Anything to report back?
Twitch chat kept complaining about the dev being a racist, fascist, xenophobic, rapist, etc-ist. but mods didn't ban them or delete the messages, instead tried to difuse tension by posting about the run in a very obvious fashion of damage control, however if you posted anything supporting the dev you got sniped, banned and the message deleted without question, the run itself was unnafected and the runner did no mention of the shitshow, but they did cut him off early when he started saying thank you to the devs.
Nedless to say i don't think we'll be seeing Factorio runs in GDQ anymore

Fuck, not even the trash fires are entertaining this year.

as someone who has been in and around the speedrunning scene for about 7 years now, both running and watching, i can say that different games/series/communities definitely attract different levels/kinds of autism, but i can also say that on the whole, i don't think the average normie viewer really knows just how truly fucking weird these people are.

i attended SGDQ17 for a couple days as a spectator, just by myself. i knew some people there through online interactions and one other small marathon i had previously attended, but GDQ was like nothing i had ever seen. it was like taking the weirdest kid you remember from high school, adding a deeper dimension of degeneracy, complete lack of sociability, and utterly unaware obnoxiousness, but instead of just one guy, it's nearly every fucking person at the event.

imo, the trans obsession and self-important SJW nonsense can only be fully understood through this lens. not only do 99% of interactions within these communities take place online, but it's usually on the most cancerous social media platforms whose very ecosystem centers around groupthink and fishing for validation. in a way you have to feel bad for people like cosmo or milesSMB ("claris"). miles ran pikmin 3 this year, his sad, obese ass sat next to what i assume is his tranny "lesbian girlfriend", loudly shouting their gayness by featuring multiple "queer" flags behind them on their wall. this is a guy who probably decided as a teenager that there was no possible way that any girl would ever date him, he probably coped heavily with porn (mostly hentai), and when the tranny shit started to blow up, he saw it as his only chance at sexual companionship (obviously with another guy in the very same predicament), and maybe more than that, his chance to be important (or as SJWs like to call it, "valid" lol).

that said, i blame the "allies". these are more normal, sociable, straight guys--maybe they have girlfriends or wives--who have ridden this wave simply for the powertrip, and they're the ones who have really destroyed speedrunning and many other communities recently. instead of looking at someone like miles and saying, "look man, lose some weight, go outside, socialize, you can do this, you're not a girl", they just cash in hard on the social justice points by talking "inclusion" until they're blue in the face, ultimately condemning people like miles to a life as a poor, miserable, uncultured, unhealthy, mentally deranged virgin, probably estranged from his family, old friends, etc. yes, there are tons of fellow tranny enablers too, but they are the super-minority. it's the haughty allies--kids whose very faces just beg you to beat them up and take their lunch money--who have ultimately instituted the fascist state of tranny-dom in speedrunning. they are the worst kind of shitbag in this story.

i just don't think it makes very much sense to say that the corporate sponsors/money are driving this. sure they could tow the PC line, but they've gone way, way, wayyyy fucking past it, to the point where it becomes borderline unwatchable for your average viewer. the "women-only" events have crossed fully into the realm of parody--speedrun.com (under its new owners) even recently published an article showcasing "four women in speedrunning", and every single one was a man. it's laughable to the point that it makes the hobby look even more ridiculous than it already does to most normal people. so personally, i don't think it's money, i think it's autism and ego.

(sry for wall of text, felt the need to vent after the twitter nerd purges of last summer)

I completely forgot about GDQ, it doesn't seem like that there's a proxy stream so I don't plan on watching. Judging by the comments here, it doesn't seem that interesting anyways.
