The conversation was set off by a series of exhausting, insidery events from the last two weeks

"Conversation" and "exhausting/ed" are two otherwise innocent words I've come to hate with a passion. Either I need to chill the fuck out or these people need to expand their vocabulary. Perhaps both. 🤔

Sorry for the powerlevel.

Some furry got Metokur banned because he's still asshurt about GamerGate.

I never even paid much attention to Gamergate apart from hating both sides and I'm just catching up on it now. So can I ask, did Nathan Grayson actually review Depression Quest? I've been hearing from anti-GGers that the whole movement was a sham because no such review exists.

That's a strawman they made up. Not even Jim's original video about 5 guys talked about a review.

Here's a good post about it from leddit of all places:

No he didn't. People constantly say he did, because he covered it favourably (IIRC), and rumour-spreading shortened that to a review. So anti-GG types jump on that, claiming that, since he didn't technically review it, then absolutely every other accusation against games journalism, Zoe Quinn and anyone else they want to defend are all complete lies.

That this is more of a technicality than an outright attempt to mislead, and that so much of what people were complaining about was and remains provably accurate - none of that matters. That one incorrect accusation means they are right and their opposition are evil manbabies.

This is not to say GG people didn't tell lies and spread misinformation. Some of them certainly did. But for some reason, saying Nathan Grayson reviewed Depression Quest rather than just talked about it favourably, more than once, without ever disclosing his personal connection to the game or Zoe Quinn, was considered a huge gotcha.

There was no such review, but Anti-GGers claim that this is proof of GG's illegitimacy.

Not that they'd ever acknowledge it as legitimate anyway - even if you provide incontrovertible evidence that shows that they are tacitly wrong about things, they just ignore it or claim it's fabricated even if the very act of fabricating it would prove infinitely more ridiculous than the evidence you just provided. Even if you catch them in the act, as happened with Jake Alley's racist harassment of a Riot Games developer, or Brianna Wu's attempt to false flag herself on Steam, they will promptly deny reality itself.

There's a reason so many of them can sustain Lolcow threads here.

Fuck, I've waded into the deep end here.

Not really. It's pretty simple at the end of the day.

The details are labyrinthine, but you don't need to go looking for those unless you want to.

Happy sixth anniversary of the Gamers Are Dead articles, fellow leaders of GamerGate!

WE WILL NEVER FORGET

But seriously, I kinda miss those heady early GG days. Such optimism and energy (and memes). The world was a simpler time then… or maybe I was just a simpler-minded person.
