I still don't know what it's all about to this day. Some whore fucked a journo for some reviews on a game and... some parties got seriously butthurt about it. That's about the gist of it that I get, and I'm not even certain I got that right.
Well in a sane world, Journo using his power over a woman to get sex for good reviews would have gotten that Journo drummed out of the Industry, but the Journalists all circled the wagons for some reason and started attacking the people saying it is wrong for a Journalist to use his position to get pussy.

I think the Blue Check Twitter is obsessed with it till this day because they are still trying to convince themselves they were in the right.

It was weird for me just because..I hated places like Kotaku since long before Gamergate was a thing and in the time of me going to sleep in the morning and waking up in the Afternoon, the Viewpoint of "Kotaku is garbage on par with Weekly World News, which is an insult to Weekly World News because at least Weekly World News is FUNNY SOMETIMES" went from "Yeah it is." to "OMG YOU FUCKING NAZI WOMEN HATER"

Jesus Christ can people just let gamergate die already

They'll never let it die. Just like 2016, it's a wound that will never heal for them.

Dude got cucked by his whore GF, and, determined to be cucked no longer, broke up with her, and published pages of evidence of her being horrifyingly abusive, as well as her fucking several people that were covering her and her game, including the head of the Independent Games Festival (who was both married and her boss). In response, the whore gets a ludicrously overreaching restraining order from a sympathetic judge that for all intents and purposes amounts to a gag order. The game journo circuit declared there was no story here after months of covering the Brad Wardell scandal despite that provably being a hoax and thrown out by a judge. People bringing up that the whore had a history of shady behavior and like 12 aliases were summarily harassed off Social Media by her supporters.

This evidence gets tamped down in real time, with huge tracts of information vanishing instantly from Social Media, reddit, and eventually even 4chan itself. This only fires up the Streisand Effect, and it soon becomes apparent that what is being discussed here is not something that the powers that be want talked about. Inevitably, a secret mailing list is leaked that exposes multiple journalists not only conspiring to bury the story, but to shut it down on outlets they didn't control - as well as revealing that many of them were financially supporting the whore and actively working with her on various projects, effectively exposing the entire incestuous thing. In response, 14 allegedly-competing publications run the same story, citing the same source over a 3-day period, decrying the gamer identity as over and effectively declaring war on gamers as a customer-base.

What transpired after this was over a year of Autism, boycotts, further dirty laundry exposing the relationship between the indie gaming press and indie gaming scene getting aired, and complete butt-fuck insanity, culminating with two professional victims going before the UN and demanding we censor the entire internet because people are allowed to call them out for their shit. The whore vacates her own restraining order when it becomes clear that she perjured herself, and the cuck gets on with his life. With pretty much every major flashpoint that helped cause the shitstorm eating some kind of consequence for it, and multiple outlets involved (including Gawker) dead, GG winds down quickly and effectively dies in October of 2015, save for those who hitched their career to it and have to pretend it's still a clear and present danger to themselves, blaming it for everything from Donald Trump to headlice.

The thing that gets me is gaming journalism has always been garbage. I would know, my dad got me a subscription to computer games magazine when I was a kid and some of their shit was good, and a lot of it was garbo. Publishers had been buddy buddy with magazines and websites for years. I just thought it was interesting that it was really the Zoe Quinn fiasco that kicked things off instead of Eidos paying Gamespot for a good review of Kane and Lynch: Dead Men five years prior.

That's the bit where the Ethics in Gaming Journalism line never rang true for me. It seemed to me that a bunch of neckbeards were really mad that some dumb thot got a good review and some dude got his dick sucked. To me, the massive corporation paying off the media seems the larger sin, but that passed, seemingly, with only a brief outrage and was then forgotten.

That's why I couldn't take GG's claims seriously.

The anti-GGers, though.... Well the problems with them are obvious.

So i say, both sides are dumbass spergs.

The ethics in Game Journalism argument was never the real reason GG happened. It was a cultural flashpoint, a reaction to almost half a decade of bullshit that had been building up in the industry. If Quinn, when the scandal broke, had owned up to it like a responsible adult, odds are good that GG itself would have flickered out and the shitstorm wouldn't have happened then, but something like it happening was a fucking inevitability. There was just too much shit like it.

The gaming press has always been shit, but it's a matter of degree in this case. There's a world of difference between an obviously corrupt review from someone who isn't allowed to say a single bad thing about a game, and a Journalist sperging for longer than one of my shitty longposts about how a game is bad because it refuses to affirm his retarded political opinions or because he feels that a game having an Anime-inspired artstyle means it's for pedophiles, or how weeb games need to be banned, or how a game based on a historical event not having a race that didn't exist in that area during that time period was racism. When GG happened, all of that bubbled up to the surface, and there was no stopping it once it did.

I think on some level they wanted it to happen since it was something from their perspective which actually interested them. They probably didnt give a shit about quinn or Anita since their efforts proactively made it worse for them. I think their antics where about red herring the fuck out of the situation and being able to talk about a subject they found interesting with it being sort of relavent to gaming.

I suppose it's not like they could get a job in actual media

Looks like Gamergate is never going to go away because it's too profitable for both parties involved.
  • The media has their bogeyman they can wheel out of the closet every few months or so to distract people from their latest fucky-wucky.
  • The edgy GG talking heads have their patreon accounts full of people who think they're "fighting the good fight" and "redpilling people".
It's just what happens when "activism" turns into "career". If the livelihood of both sides depends on making lots of noise, there's no incentive for either to go quiet.

You're right on the first group, but on the second, you couldn't be more wrong.

Not that there aren't people who were formerly with GG trying that gambit, that's absolutely has happened - but that there's profit in doing that. That well ran dry ages ago - why they do it now is because it gives them people they can justify attacking and an excuse to act like an asshole to people. To give you an idea of how not-profitable it is, One Angry Gamer gets roughly 20% of its traffic from Skyrim Pornographic Mod Community Loverslab (I'm not joking) and has an average site visit time of under two minutes.

When you look at the former GGers who managed some level of success beyond the Autism Holy War, none of them staked their careers to it, and all of them moved onto other things. It's only the most desperate and most toxic elements that clung to the war after it was over, and virtually none of them are doing well, or have much reach, since almost every case of it happening was a case like Homer or Usher, where they're a gigantic asshole with no volume control.

That's a fair assessment. There's more than just financial profit here (even though I did only mention Patreon, which was a goof on my part). Loudmouths on both sides who are still peddling the GG/anti-GG narrative want attention and feeling like they're actually affecting people's opinions on things.

Ultimately, though, you're right. Having a cheap-and-easy target for anger that justifies them being assholes in general is a better answer.

With things that preceeded it such as one journalist surrounding himself with bags of potato chips and soda or one site firing one of its reviewers because he didn't give a game they shilled all over the site a low score, one could also imagine why not have some GamerGate drum up when those incidents happened. Then again, the whole Zoe Quinn drama may as well of acted the last straw when you had game journalist get so defensive they had all their sites say "gamers dead." Only thing games journalism had making it different by the time GG began may as well be personal political opinions and spergings getting more focus what with reviews wanting say Far Cry 5 failed partly because they didn't get some Trump style enemies to shoot.

And in regards to one wondering over anime-inspired art styles, Jason Schrier (unless I'm mixing him up with another guy) managed to get that to be a thing when he bitched about some titty witch one could play as in Dragon's Crown. So much that it got him into an online slapfight with one of the developers. With all that said, all GamerGate really led to was some prime autism, both in those for it what with seeing people like former Kiwis such as Homer Beoulve and Lord Rainbowdash, alongside spergs you could find else where going on with it on other sites such as Twitter and Reddit, and on the anti side where I can never forget how one sperg on that side said that "thinking both sides are at fault is apologism." I remember someone said that anti was like the "Goebbels of GamerGate" in that he spews things that lines up with his narrative of GamerGate being something terrible.

Well, I mean, look at all the OAG spergs, he might've been on to something

(I'm kidding, of course)
Even with kidding on that, never forget how OAG and his spergs will think there is nothing wrong with a game that could have something in it such as scat so long as it's anime style and the game has some sort of 18+ patch that lets them engage in degenerate anime sex.

Looks like Gamergate is never going to go away because it's too profitable for both parties involved.

That's all the husk of it is at this point/ You have people churning out articles trying to go on how GamerGate was some group of evil gamers out to keep the minority lgbt+ women down. Sure you got some spergs that fulfill that such as OAG but compare that to everyone else that simply went "#notyourshield," thought shit like removing titty sliders was stupid (so long as those complaining didn't go into the depths of screaming like tards over it and managed to not come off as full-on spergs when voicing something they didn't like), and thought parts of gaming journalism was a joke when the journalist didn't give an honest assessment on how a game was.
You're right on the first group, but on the second, you couldn't be more wrong.

Most would no doubt move on from that shit after it ran its course on either side. Anyone coming back at the hashtag from what I seen would either just make a hot take mocking a guy thinking GamerGate somehow is related to something that happened and still clinging onto something they believed from years ago (One thinking the whole movement's some right-wing gay op, the other thinking it's not some sort of right wing gay op.)

At best with those clinging to it, you just have people still believing some sort of narrative it had and maybe just pushing something they believed in it on some site like Twitter i.e. one guy has gamergate as a hashtag in his bio, the other just thinking some nerds from that era must be out to get some trans artist making a shit webcomic.

Outside of financial profit, there's always getting clout. And what better way to get clout amongst some sperg-ass weebs of OAG or sperg-ass tankies/whatever you can call the opposite side on a site like Twitter than to go on saying "REEEE anti-SJWS/SJWS" with some hot take involving GamerGate.

but the Journalists all circled the wagons for some reason

Game "journalists" didn't do this for Zoe's benefit - they were trying to keep people from realizing they were taking bribes for positive press and good reviews, fucking each other, blacklisting people for WrongThink, and pulling strings so that their buddies would win awards instead of people who actually worked hard to make great games.

Zoe was simply the tip of it. Once things like multiple sites having the same article headline out led to some spergs on the other side on to something, games journalist realized their own clique would be challenged. For all the autism GamerGate had with it's pro-side members, the journalist they sperged at had their own shit dugged up.

The journo scum really, really want everyone to think it was solely about Zoe Quinn because then they can push the poor poor whammens bullshit. She was just the most obvious and grossly, physically literal example of corrupt cocksucking.

Beyond the Five Guys debacle she had, I can barely remember her getting any focus beyond maybe a few speaking panels she got mentioned among games journalist and GG autist. I seen her get more attention on her than elsewhere with GG spergings such as 8Chan.

They can't let something die if it gives them a reason to pull some victim card bullshit so I imagine even years form now they still would treat Gamergate some kind of landmark event in history when in reality its just a filpnote at best.

As dumb and autistic as this sounds, but I think GamerGate is going to be for the Millennial Left what Nixon was for the Boomer Left, a convenient boogeyman who kicked off the beginning of the end for all their hopes and dreams.

In reality, Nixon was actually a pretty decent president in terms of hard policy even if he was a total scumbag in terms of his personality. Nixon's reforms were massive game-changers, and some were good (OSHA, EPA), some were bad (continuing COINTELPRO), while other policies were short-sighted but seemed good at the time (Detente and opening up to China)

But in the pop culture narrative, Nixon was this evil tyrant whose sole legacy is Watergate and nothing else.

GamerGate was a dumb internet slap fight and at best, is a brief footnote in history by itself.

But it also helped kick off the madness of "Current Year" and acted as a catalyst for the wider SJW zeitgeist that began with the Occupy protests alongside other major catalyst events like Sandy Hook, the Zimmerman Trial, and the Ferguson riots.

However, I think we're still going to see Millennial SJW and neo-punk burnouts bitching about GamerGate decades after everyone else has forgotten about it, kind of like all the former hippies still bitching about Nixon and Watergate.

If Trump wins a second term, he's going to go down in history the same way Reagan did, a hero for the conservatives and a villain for the liberals, with neither depiction resembling anything close to his actual presidency and platform.

Really, the anti-GG crowd is the worst for clinging onto a long-dead war so they can chase clout but the pro-GG crowd has its fair share of spergs and has-beens, most notably OAG and Sargon to a lesser extent.

The Anti-GG can best be summed up as "winning the battle, but losing the war"

Neither side really "won" the GamerGate slapfights but it seemed the Anti-GG crowd came out better afterwards since they still controlled the narrative and the MSM backed them, plus you had the wider SJW zeitgeist of the 2010's on their side as well. The biggest win the pro-GG had when it was all current would probably be the UN laughing at Anita and Zoe.

Now the culture is shifting and wokeness is in its intense violent death throes while Corona has given the rest of us real problems to worry about.

TL;DR-Anyone who's still actively caring about GamerGate in 2020 is an idiot

The reason they're still chimping so hard about GG is that they lost despite (and even possibly because) the fake news supported their ridiculous narrative, and because GG just lumbered on autistically not giving one single fuck about optics or what the MSM thought or said. All this really did was underscore the entire news media is corrupt and garbage.

Fair assessment in why GG stings so much for them, but not in who "won" the Autism Holy War.

The only people who truly won were the audience, of course, and Lolcow Chronicleers in particular, but if you're talking which side lost more ground, then holy shit, did Anti-GG lose to a fucking hilarious degree. @AnOminous once very accurately established why this is, but to paraphrase, it's because GG itself started at zero. Before GG was ever a thing, the people who would eventually give rise to GG were maligned repeatedly by the press as entitled misogynistic autists who are chasing women/minorities out of the industry. Throw whatever insult you want at them from that point, it's not like you can get them to look any worse.

Meanwhile, you have Anti-GG doing a whirlwind tour on the national stage to virtue signal as hard as they can. You have Anita going on the Colbert report and being fed softball questions, Quinn going before congressional representitives, and both going before the UN. You have them meeting with Google, and Facebook, and trying to pretend they're completely innocent victims, when 20 seconds and the search engine of your choice would reveal a very different story. Now throw in things like GJP getting exposed, the CON log leaks, the CON trello log leaks, the revelation that several major members of CON were pedophiles and/or sex offenders. Throw in things like Quinn's attempt to bait from Nintendo, only to be told to fuck off by the House of Mario. Look at the Patreons of the professional victims brigade, and how they've all been on that long downward slide. Look at the collapse of numerous journo outlets, including Gawker, whose employees blamed GG for its death more than Hulk Hogan.

GG started looking like a bunch of Autistic spergs, and it ended looking like a bunch of Autistic spergs. They effectively lost little, if anything.

From what I recall GG 'won' the moment the gamers are dead articles came out as any posibility of getting shit locked down collapsed after that. Anti-gg claims to win Gamergate is the equivelant of saying the Romans won the Visigoth sack of Rome or the Europe won the Black death.
Once Gamers are dead came out the only real question was how much damage Gamergate was going to do before it died down .
