Gamergate was more important than people give it credit for, because it was the first time any of these freaks had seen any resistance. We might think it's cringe and barely remember it, but they will never ever get over it.

Working in retail for many years I can tell you very clearly that "Fuck X company, they deserve to be stolen from." is a very common thought process among shop lifters. Usually by people who don't know how much I actually get paid.

When I caught someone trying to hid shit in a trash can going through the self serve they said to me and I quote "Why do you even care what I steal, they don't pay you shit." at which point I asked them how much I got paid..and they guessed Less than the legal minimum wage.

Back when I worked retail, the term tossed around for theft was "shrinkage." Internal (employee) or external (customer), didn't really matter, but if it reached a certain level Corporate figured your storefront just didn't make sense to keep open any more and swung the axe with no pity. Managers might get offered a job at a location nowhere near the current one, but all the hourlies were out on their asses. Granted it was one factor among many, but it was more important than you'd think.

And this was at a retail chain considered one of the better ones to work at.

All of which is why I'm kind of reading that cartoon and trying very hard not to go complete a-log/into a towering Jesus based rage against that sanctimonious twat. Her actions, assuming she's actually doing what is portrayed, very definitely hurts others and damn well could cost them their job.

I would hazard a guess that, even knowing these things, they would still steal. Why? Because it wasn't really about values at all. That's just something they say in the hopes they will get away with it unpunished.

It's the same thing as when atheists say "Jesus said you should bring in infinity third world migrants... No, I hate your God and want you to suffer, so this argument wouldn't work on me, but it should work on you stupid."

As far as Gamergate goes, the thing will always be some sort of fallback for these people, because they have to think the whole blowback over a crappy comic was because the artist is a transwoman and totally not some asshole in how she responded or how weak her excuses were.

I still don't know what it's all about to this day. Some whore fucked a journo for some reviews on a game and... some parties got seriously butthurt about it. That's about the gist of it that I get, and I'm not even certain I got that right.
