So, I'm wondering: Did GG actually accomplish anything? I'm struggling to think of a tangible impact it had on gaming journalism, the industry, etc. as far as its stated goals went.
I don't know, I'd say the anti gamergate side "won", in that the average person, if they ever even heard of it, think gamergate was some woman hating nerdy gamer dudes harrassing and threatening people because they're nerds.

For me, it accomplished knocking another big hole in what trust I had of the mainstream media, to see something so falsely reported, especially when so much information was so easily checked, was a bit shocking to me. It opened my eyes to the damage a censorship campaign can do to any cause. Gamergate partially became what it was accused of being because it was constantly being driven further underground (internet wise) meaning it was being talked about in sketchier places, like here.

Now I like Kiwi Farms, but like gamergate, if a random person has heard of it, it's mostly got negative connotations.

So I don't know, since then there have been a ton of other similar opportunities to see the mainstream media as the liars they are, but I'm not sure there's been a case where it was so easy to see they were lying.

The main impact GG had was that it lead to video game developers, media, and publishers all being a lot more openly progressive.

The whole movement pretty much backfired tbh and seems to have been wholly rejected by the gaming industry.

Weird that the industry didn't like the industry's corruption being pointed out...

That's what made this all work. People treating shitty industries and companies as being the deciders of moral right and wrong. You never trust what a company representative is telling you, because they're looking out for their company. They're like politicians who don't need the majority to be elected.

Who exactly was hiding how progressive they were before GooberGate? Just curious.

It's not that they were hiding it, it's just that it doesn't seem like 'diversity and inclusiveness' were really priorities up until after GG.

Can you think of any overtly progressive or political developers/publishers before GG? The whole sjw thing didn't seem to pop up until after GG.

If we're going to be honest, gamergate probably had a pretty tiny overall impact. You can talk about corruption, but I guarantee that 99% of consumers don't give a shit about 'gaming journalism.' They go to websites like IGN and skim to the big number at the end of the review and to watch trailers. Very few people care about 'ethics' because ultimately, they're just toys. It's not like they're writing about foreign policy. They're writing about toys.

I'd say that GG popped up in reaction to overtly progressive and political developers/publishers, not the other way around.

Actually, I'd say it was the games gerbilists that did most of the work, but some developers did some nonsense things as well (see the Sunset fiasco).

"Creatives" in general tended to lean left. The novelty isn't that, but that a group of people who had little to nothing to do with games and who only "created" them as an entree into the subculture, went on a jihad of terrorizing anyone who wasn't in complete agreement with them about everything out of the profession, while using corrupt practices to promote their cronies.

When people called this into question, they went full Stormtrooper, called in all their media whore buddies, and did everything within their at the time considerable power to destroy these critics utterly.

When they had done their worst, the critics were still there telling them to go fuck themselves, and they've never mentally recovered.

It is like a literal Holocaust to them that people are allowed to disagree with them.

Porn star Mercedes Carrera, who was fairly active in the GamerGate community (from what I remember) was arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse of a minor under the age of 10.

An adult-film actress and a pornography producer face charges for allegedly sexually abusing a girl under the age of 10 for several months in Rancho Cucamonga.

Melinda Smith, 35 — who works under the stage name Mercedes Carrera — and Jason Whitney, 43, were each charged Tuesday with multiple counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 10 and one count of possession of a controlled substance, according to court records.

Investigators were first alerted to the alleged abuse on Thursday, Jan. 31, according to a Sheriff’s Department press release.

Detectives conducted an “extensive interview with a minor female victim,” and determined she had been sexually abused several times over four month by Smith and Whitney, both Rancho Cucamonga residents, officials said. Authorities did not specify how the victim knew Smith and Whitney in order to protect the child’s identity.

“The sexual abuse consisted of inappropriate touching, oral copulation and digital penetration, which occurred over four months,” the sheriff’s statement said.

Whitney has produced and directed pornographic movies, web shows and award shows in the adult-film industry, officials said.

Investigators served a search warrant Friday, Feb. 1 at Smith and Whitney’s home at the Carmel at Terra Vista apartments at 10850 Church St. During the search, detectives found evidence that corroborated the victim’s statement, said sheriff’s officials, who added they also say they found methamphetamine and two loaded handguns. Detectives discovered the couple had a makeshift studio in their bedroom for adult film shoots.

Sheriff’s officials did not indicate if they believe the alleged victim’s assaults were recorded.

After questioning Smith and Whitney at the sheriff’s Rancho Cucamonga station, detectives arrested the couple. Smith and Whitney were being held without bail at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Reset the clock.

Will Mombot be adding this to his/her handy list of sexual offenders who got involved in GG?

I expect this thread will be getting some traffic soon thanks to a new article on the Escapist written by their new EiC, especially since Quinn's on the warpath and her troglodytes are swarming.

I always kind of thought it was an early sign of GG jumping the shark when she got involved anyway. Anytime something gets big an farcical porn stars jump on board, like when Mary Carey ran for Governor of California as part of this clusterfuck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_gubernatorial_recall_election

‘Gamergate’ Advocate Arrested on Allegations of Molesting Child

Melinda Smith, an adult film actress who works under the name “Mercedes Carrera,” was a prominent figure in the “Gamergate” movement online in 2015. She was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of sexually abusing a child younger than 10 years old, CBS Los Angeles reports.

From CBSLA:

Detectives from the Rancho Cucamonga police department say they were first notified of sexual acts against a girl under the age of 10 on Jan. 31. The girl was sexually abused repeatedly over four months by Smith and [Jason] Whitney, according to police.

Last Friday, a search warrant served at their home uncovered evidence corroborating the girl’s statement, a bedroom set-up where the couple could film and record various pornographic videos or web shows, methamphetamine and two loaded handguns, police said.

Gamergate was spawned by alleged concerns about “ethics in game journalism,” but quickly devolved into a cesspit of right-wing hysteria about “SJWs” (social justice warriors) that culminated in hyper-misogynistic harassment campaigns against women. Smith spent much of 2015 and early 2016 talking to media about her support for the anti-woman Gamergate propagators, decrying modern feminism and belittling women who sought to advocate for their interests in the tech industry. Her criticisms quickly earned her a favorable reputation in the Gamergate community.

For example, a 2015 blog authored by Mike Cernovich, who participated in the Gamergate movement, described Smith as “everything women who oppose #GamerGate are not,” adding that she was “thoughtful, intelligent, and fiercely independent.” In 2016, Smith was removed from a panel at South by Southwest over allegations that she harassed an activist who opposed online harassment. Smith was the subject of glowing articles from right-wing media at the time, landing flattering features at The Daily Caller and Breitbart, and appearing on programs hosted by right-wing media figures who supported Gamergate, including Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and Infowars personality Paul Joseph Watson.

It’s hard to imagine that these media figures who backed Smith in 2015 would have had any idea that she would later be arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor. But Smith’s arrest comes as another example of the toxicity that flourished in the Gamergate movement; the fallout of that era online also served as a convenient foundation for the so-called “alt-right” to disseminate white nationalist propaganda to massive audiences of young men.

That's one of the most exceptional takes I've ever read. The alt-right, for all their faults, tend to oppose pedophilia while progressives have been trying to rehabilitate it.

Was there literally any pro-gg e-celeb caught for actual sex crimes prior to this (actual crime, not loli support and/or whatever Milo said)? Only took em what, 5 years, but hey, gotta milk it.

Well, that's… a dark turn. Despite what the antis are sure to espouse, however, even though she identified as a GamerGater, she wasn't exactly a leader or tentpole on the level of Jim or Sargon, or even MomBot or (lulz) Cheong… just more of a curiosity.

Children are easily-led and unreliable witnesses, so there's still a chance this is a screw-up. Maybe their neighbors didn't approve of having porn producers living next to them so they taught their daughter what to say to the police or something like that. The DA will likely need more than the kid's testimony to get a conviction. Let's see if more comes of this. If it's true, though… How do you sexualize a girl under ten years old? Like, what is there to sexualize? Never mind, don't answer that. Pedos are weird.

If anything, she was more or less likely to be paying lip service. While she is arrested for accusations of child molestation, the anti's will no doubt take this as a victory despite their side having male feminist being sex pest. And considering this is a porn star that's being arrested, one may as well have some assumption at the possibility that the accusations may be coming from some anti-porn types.

Edit: It should be clarified though that the news article that doesn't bother with GG shit unlike Right Wing Watch states that police found evidence to corroborate with the claims.
Edit: Looked at the mugshots of the accused from the link that was posted by @Dick Pooman.

On one hand, I had to do a double take to make sure that was Mercedes. On the other hand, not really looking good in that mugshot. Her boyfriend though looks like he can be a sex pest thanks to that beard.
