In general, Left is Feels and Right is Facts. Gamergaters watched facts get fucked over by feelings via enthusiast press & journalists. Those same journalists were also shilling Hillary, ergo anything the Republicans trotted out would have been go-to just to stick it to the lying feelie babbys, especially since most GGers weren't particularly satisfied with any of the outcomes.

I tried to read that article. I really did. But I think if I roll my eyes one more time today they will actually fall out, so I had to stop.

So I'm going to posit a counter article.

Hate and outrage culture, as exemplified by Anti-Gamer Gate has driven america to new levels of partisanship.

It's easy to see almost anywhere you go that there is a myopia of opinion. People are literally physically attacking other people for having the "wrong opinions". We've seen it get worse and worse, but you might wonder how it got so bad.

Well, back in deuce-aught-dickety-five, a bunch of sad internet loser types who read video game review sites for some reason noticed that really shitty games were given wildly inflated reviews. Instead of doing the sensible thing and not reading anymore video game review sites, they decided to investigate why this is. Around the same time, some dude wrote some stuff about a woman who he was dating, who made a shitty game that got awesome reviews, which revealed that several reviewers had undisclosed relationships with her.

When people complained about this, the people running the review sites cynically exploited the recent wave of anti-mysogony to claim this was actually an attack on women. They used their influence to get others to censor dissenting opinions, and once they dominated the main arena of information, claimed victory, but insisted they needed more power to prevent this from happening in the future.

Those who were willing to work around the censorship eventually understood the true story, but the misinformation campaign had broadly worked. On top of this, the Anti-Gamer Gate crowd made sure to keep pushing out troll bait, then when they inevitably got trolled, would claim it as proof of the mysogony they needed to fight.

It's easy to see how this pattern has continued to manifest in our society. Today even basic facts seem to be partisan issues, and a line can clearly be drawn back from where we are now to the root of the Anti-Gamer Gate movement.

Oh shit... I wrote a real article there. That was supposed to be parody, I seem to have gotten carried away and written a much better piece than that CNET one.

It's been in the back of my mind for a while but does anyone else find it a weird coincidence that it seems most of the gamer gate figures are now in the Alt right, pro whites, camp? Is it just a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that the powers that be are all extreme left?

It just strikes me as a little weird considering how much disdain the right seems to have for gaming in general.
Those that were in for money or fame, went for greener pastures where they can profit off greater amounts of gullible and disenfranchised.

Others just wanted to continue being an edgy contrarian after everyone got bored of Anita.

It's also possible gaming was really the only outlet some people had left to shield themselves from world in not the best of times, and with it disrupted they went against the ones they perceive to have disturbed their last escapist retreat.

Bingo.

I think that's most of it, but we'd be remiss not to mention the context of ~15 years earlier though as that is an important piece of the puzzle imo as the question initially was regarding how much of GG seemed to end up in the same spheres as the alt-right.

This may sound like a :powerlevel: because it kind of is but I think the experience probably speaks to a non-trivial portion of those that supported GG.

I know that I first got politically aware over Jack Thompson when I was young, so my formative entry into the political world and that resulted in a distinctly pro-free-speech foundation. I suspect I wasn't alone as that was the primary argument leveled against the politicians that were trying to fuck with vidya in the gaming press, so there were a lot of young 'uns who probably embraced free speech as part of their political foundation. Given that this was the Bush years being left and pro-free-speech dovetailed nicely with resistance to Bush given some of the shit that went down regarding political speech against the president (free speech zones and the like) which I know rubbed me the wrong way.

Now fast forward almost a decade and Anita initially, but more relevantly, GG, highlight in no uncertain terms that this thing we all believed in to keep vidya from becoming a censored cesspit has been rejected wholesale by the "thought leaders" in gaming, and that my views, which remained largely unchanged, were suddenly labeled as one of several unflattering "ism".

I know that was a wakeup call for me, I can't speak for others but it seems logical I am not the only one who had a wakeup call like that.

For me, I know if I'm suddenly persona non grata and getting stabbed in the back about as hard as one can given the context (the gaming press doing a complete 180 on free speech), I'm not sticking around for more. Hence the migration to pastures which at least tolerate the notion that free speech is important.

I would love to see the next Star Wars sperging about GamerGate.

I can see it now:

The newest hero to bring balance to the Force is a fat, non binary, demi-sexual trans lesbian disabled Muslim woman. Xir does not use lightsabers or Midichlorians to fight the Sith (now led by the fabulous Emperor Yannapolistine)- zhey just scream about how oppressed zhey are because straight white men are playing video games. The movie ends with nothing happening except xir's Patreon pulling in $5000 while xhe does nothing but post selfies of xir's microdick and FUPA on Tublr and Twitter.

Men are crying salty tears because the #TotalShutdown excludes them. Apparently, womxn are preventing them from making a difference. No, Brad. What's preventing you from making a difference is your privilege and your male fuckery. Go forth and convert the Todds of the world, Brad

I see all the men out there being all offended. Where were those tears when womxn were raped? Where were those tears during #MeToo? Where were those tears during #Gamergate? Where are those tears when your mates tell rape jokes and catcall women on the street. Mxm. Sit down.

>hashtag about a specific country's physical violence towards women
>mentioning gamergate

I don't think they even have video games in South Africa anymore.
I'm trying to come up with a Farming Simulator joke here, but I can't seem to put it together this early in the morning.

What's a Brad and what's a Todd? And do they know Chad by any chance?
I'd guess it's framing Brad Wardell(CEO of Stardock and killer of histrionic women on twitter) who's aware of the bullshit women are peddling online & isn't buying any of it, and calling on him to do an about-face to convert the Todd Howards(Director of Bethesda, of Elder Scrolls fame) of the world who don't know or just don't care one way or the other.
