The Wallstreet Journal has covered gamergate:

http://online.wsj.com/articles/will-silicon-valley-have-its-nfl-moment-1411673207

Their take? Gamers are basically the NFL and Silicon Valley Venture Capatilists, a bunch of mysoganistic white boy trolls who want to oppress women and keep anyone who isn't white, a boy, or a troll out of the 100 billion dollar gaming industry. Also Anita had to flea her home.

I feel properly chastised, thanks WSJ for all your hard work looking into a single sided issue full of nothing but damsels and villains.

The What Street Journal?

Oh, right! The paper for entitled douchebags that nobody on Long Island buys, because only Newsday and El Diario are the only papers left worth a shit that aren't obscenely local up here in NY anymore, as evidenced by the fact that when we had a state-wide transit strike pending that could completely hinder the commute of millions of New Yorkers and could cost the state millions of dollars per hour, only those two papers deigned to report it, whilst the WSJ kept posting THE ECONOMY IS FINE NOTHING IS RUINED articles and the Post and Daily News were too busy talking about Football and trying to dismiss other issues in NY as not being big deals.

Man, I am so glad we got to hear from these people. Truly, we could never have continued our discussion without their contributions.

I'd like to point out the WSJ is owned by Rupert Murdoch and like any of his properties exists to serve his agenda. I'm a bit mystified that he'd let it side with a bunch of useless teen girls. Does Murdoch/Sky News own any video game companies?

It doesn't own any per se, but it does have ties to a few. Its main game-related arm hasn't done anything remotely successful in fucking years.

i've stopped following this for what seems like a month and, excuse my ignorance, but nothing much seems to have happened.

more things have been uncovered and it's gained more exposure, and don't get me wrong that's great. but until these people publicly apologize or something similar happens, i think it's a stalemate.

although this has shown me how important ethics and integrity are, and i'm getting a BA in Communications because of that. hopefully it's things like that which cause positive results from this in the long run.

I understand your sentiment all too well. And it's a common one, not just in this, but in everything. We now live in a world with 24/7 communications and news cycles, where it's an endless push for consumer eyes to be on every single product. This is a world where news agencies have news networks that have a constant stream of talking heads spouting "opinion" pieces and dressing them up like real news. Remember the mystery Malaysia airlines plane that vanished? CNN had round the clock news coverage of that for nearly a month, even though no one knows what happened now any more than they do then.

But people kept talking about it! Nonstop, endlessly, online, in print, on cable news, this stream of opinion and conjecture and baseless speculation and "facts" that were hoaxes or lies or made up that were retracted and replaced with more shit that didn't happen. And all the while, people are still quietly searching for that plane on their own, and are doing their absolute best to ignore all the hand wringing reports about terrorist hijackers or secret missiles or LOST-esque conspiracy theories.

That's Gamergate right now. There's a lot of stuff happening that isn't big, and it isn't flashy, but it's working. People write these nasty articles without any basis or investigation or they write ones we agree with and we all link them and talk and bitch and cheer and worry. But we're still consumers, we're still consuming the 24/7 news cycle, just around a story that interests us. Behind the scenes, advertisers are pulling their support every day with concentrated efforts targeting a specific company with email campaigns daily. Website rankings and visitors have tanked. Twitter groups are now set up to spoil clickbait articles in both gaming news and "real" news for sites like Gawker.

But that's not flashy or buzzworthy. It's working, things are being accomplished, but it takes time. When 100 people fire off emails telling Scottrade they will not use their service for advertising with a company that insults and hates them, their PR manager has to read all those emails, and have meetings about the emails, and do calculations on how much this could come back to bite them if they are tied to the drama, and days or weeks later when a decision is made something happens. But thats not "SECRET CABEL OF ELITE GAMING JOURNOS EXPOSED" or "FEMINIST DRIVEN FROM HOME BY SCREAMING MANBABBIES" or "WHY GAMERS ARE DEAD AND ZOMBIES ARE GREAT" -- all are stories that have their place, but rely on instant coverage for a slow moving event.

Anyway, found this interesting stuff when I was browsing through Tom Preston's Twitter. It's from the TRUE and HONEST Zoe Quinn herself.

It's a battle of attrition. Think of it like a seige where the object is to force a surrender from your opponent. They have supplies (in this case ad revenue etc.) to last them a while but if you keep up the pressure they will have to give up at some point. They wont apologise until they have absolutely no other option. They'll continue being smug and insulting right up until they start losing their jobs. You will see them get more aggressive as they see themselves getting trapped in a ridiculous position. Definitely isn't a stalemate though.

It just takes time to prove that this is seriously damaging revenue and we aren't just going to give up.

More than that, we really don't have anything to lose in keeping up the siege. They've already said we're worse than ISIS and Heinrich Himmler. Repeatedly, no less! Really, we can't lose this as long as we keep the pressure on. And every giant fuck-up they make makes things better for us.

As to quote one of the most badass lines from a certain video game:

"Your words are heartening - For you would not fear us unless we could truly do you harm."

And now I really want to play Soul Reaver. :heart-full:

They really shot themselves in the foot (repeatedly) with that one. They're saying it's better to commit war crimes than say mean things on the internet. Granted, some people use the anonymity provided by the intenet to say terrible things, but (as far as I know) no one has lost their head over this.

What I find interesting is I've never even heard quite a few of the rumors she's "dispelling" and I try to still follow gamergate to a degree. They try not to mentioned her too much in the threads I've seen because right now you have people of actual significance chiming in on gamergate and people are more concerned about that. She is really insistent on trying to keep herself in all of this. Recently she took on a twitter name that had nothing to do with her nickname as "Literally Who" and wasn't tweeting as much complaining about gamergate. I guess that drop in attention bugged her because she seems to be back to it.

Since she seems to have adopted the "Literally Who" moniker, I vote we change it to "She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named."

This is why I read Zero Hedge.

That entire shitfit from Ms. Quinn was purely due to TFYC's blog response to Social Justice Viv's blog post.

40+ tweets to respond to a blog post certainly seems to tell me the girl has something she wishes to hide. From my experience, the guilty always feel the need to provide long explanations and justifications for their errors whereas the innocent would just say "it's not true" and move on.

You would know, York.

You can trust the FBI Special Agent, people.

40+ tweets to respond to a blog post certainly seems to tell me that the girl would be well served by getting rid of her twitter in favor of an actual blog.

I think if these people didn't have access to a publishing platform that restricts them to super-short messages (and thus encourages them to spout opinions on whatever crosses their line of sight), they'd probably find themselves spending a lot less time with their feet in their mouths.

You mean like a Tumblr account? http://ohdeargodbees.tumblr.com/

But then she wouldn't get 100s of retweets per message and a constant stream of replies reassuring her that she's the most awesome thing ever. Just imagine what her iphone is like. Constantly pinging as all of her fans respond to each one of her messages. She's block happy so it's going to be overwhelmingly positive. Her amazing little hugbox echo chamber.

They aren't ever going to apologize. The best we can hope for is that they get fired or leave and everyone is a bit more aware.

Although they might turn on each other like a pack of starved dogs. Maya is already one casualty. Some may even apologise and attempt to save face by dropping relevant info.

would you mind expanding on what happened with maya? google doesn't help much
