Milo is such a beast. It's like watching a handicap match where the sole wrestler decks his opponents all at once.
Milo's latest article gets me all emotional. I've been waiting for about 15 years for gaming media to clean up its act, almost everyone hated it but there was no spark to rise up.

It's a speculative piece, but even the little bits I've picked up on back him up. Every time we are declared dead the hashtag trends even further upwards. Steadily. That means more hands emailing and more power. Lots more power. Advertisers pick up on the fact that we're being incessantly attacked and yet we continue and grow. It gives credence to our arguments. And don't forget that a vast majority of the articles attacking us come from the three companies with the most to lose.

It's easy to look out on a sea of damning headlines and be disheartened by the way in which GamerGate has been characterised by the press. But sober analysis reveals--as a forthcoming piece by my colleague Noah Dulis intends to show--that GamerGate has already succeeded or on its way to succeeding in virtually every goal it has set itself.
Don't underestimate the terror at companies such as Gawker and Vox Media right now. They're putting on a brave and defiant face, but consumers and readers have spoken. Structural changes are afoot. And, as we all know, the consumer always ultimately wins--especially when that consumer is ruthless, systematic, brilliantly organised and has spent the last ten years obsessively focused on winning.

Hehe

UPDATE: Jason Schreier, a Kotaku writer, compared #GamerGate to Ebola, as plenty of GGers predicted would inevitably happen somewhere:

Naturally, it's been deleted and he made a quick apology, but I don't think that really cuts the mustard here. Maybe if he apologised to #GamerGate specifically, he would come off as less of a bastard, but these journalists seriously need to grow the fuck up. He's probably older than me, and it didn't take much Internet exposure on my end to know not to be a dickhead when I'm representing my employers.

I went back to a blog I used to read, PZ Myers' Pharyngula blog. Apparently he's something of a SJW and along with his followers. They're pissed off that Dawkins is pro gamergate. I'm sorta shocked at how far the SJW cancer has metastasized. A biology professor who's a big atheist fighter is whining about how all gamers are misogynists.

Yeah its really shocking how a lot of places we've trusted have come out as shills :/ and now my conservative friends are rolling their eyes going "we told you so". Its been a really humbling experience for me and now I double-check my sources when I read any publication.

The SJW cancer hit hit atheism a few years ago. Elevatorgate, atheism+, etc. Only a few people fought back. Gaming is unique in that it has been putting up more resistance than anyone else.

I had the same exact experience. Idealogically, gg is split between authoritarian left and everyone else. That's such a rare line for an issue to be divided along that I think a lot of people had their eyes opened by it. At least I hope. It's surreal to see that fucking Breitbart is one of the only sites reliably reporting the truth on gamergate, and that anti-gg has leftists turned into bizarro right wing authoritarians.

IA did a live stream with a few folks from the atheist community a few days back, covering the Atheism+ era pretty well it seems.

These people are beginning to use apologies in the same way Catholics once used indulgences i.e sin as much as you'd like cause you'll be able to pay your way to absolution afterwards. They think they can get away with everything just by using the apology card.

I don't think it's any coincidence that these people have the same mentality as that of a spoiled child.

I've seen it suggested elsewhere on the 'net that everyone should give Schreier a break because of his prompt deletion and apology. But we're (mostly) Christorians - what are two of the main lessons we all should know by now?
  • Words are worthless, actions show change
  • No one trolls Chris better than Chris
Gawker has a "no apology" rule that apparently Sam Biddle broke with his fingers-crossed mea culpa, and that extends to all their arms, Kotaku included. They have yet to apologize for their horrendous reporting, doxxings, censorship, and libelous actions - actions which have had real ramifications for the people they write about but don't actually investigate. Gawker media and it's employees need to be constantly reminded of their own words. It's not like people are making things up - and it's not like they are nobodies, these are some of the biggest people in gaming and gossip. Until they either make some kind of honest attempt to getting better (a promoted front page apology, cutting the majority of their staff, actual ethics policy that isn't shaped by RockPaperShotgun, etc) or he resigns, I don't believe the apology of a man who encourages censorship and works for liars and bullies.

THEY'RE WORKING ON IT!
UGH!

If we've learned nothing else from Gamergate, it's that we *all* need to watch out for extremism, and how it's not just limited to one side or the other. Both the Right and Left have components that are toxic, absolutely bug-fuck insane, and completely anathema to genuine discourse.

You can be on either side of the political fence, but we have common ground, and that common ground is where legitimately good discussion lies. We have to work together to accomplish anything of note, and Gamergate's proof that it can happen in the best of ways. We're all people here. We're all gamers, and we're everyone now. From that old guy at the Nursing Home my mom's at that was playing Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, to the little kids on my bus playing Giana Sisters and Angry Birds.

An interesting corollary to this is that I've noticed a big difference in how both sides react to neutral parties. As a general rule, Anti-GGers seem to be of the PICK A SIDE, NANCY mindset wherein they demand you choose, whereas in general Pro-GGers are fine with neutrals and often encourage them to use their better judgment. As an interesting, possibly-related side-effect, is that in general Pro-GG is more legitimately open to discourse. I've never heard "I don't need evidence" from a Pro-GGer. I have multiple times from the Anti-GG crowd.

I have to assume that referring to GGers as "Sonic the Hedgehog fans" is Gawker's way of calling everyone in the movement autistic. I really can't think of any other correlation.

CHANGE SONIC THE HEDGEHOG'S ARMS BACK, NOW

So they're still going on the Autism/Bullying/Etc angle, then.

Glorious.

ADDENDUM FROM LIKE 12 HOURS LATER: Does anyone else find it weird that the attack patterns keep going further and further into the land of weirdness? First we're Misogynist Shitlords, now they're stopping juuuuust short of calling us retarded.

Also seriously I need to not post when running on 2 hours of sleep goddamn

RIP New Atheism

Slightly off-topic: What do you all think will be the state of gaming when all is said and done? I'm hoping that everyone can find some common ground but that seems very unlikely at this point.
Nothing will change. The big companies will dominate the marketplace. Indies will try to make a profit. Game media will stay the same they'll just try to be better at not getting caught.

You might have some nerds continue to complain but as long as they buy the games the industry as a whole will stay the same.

So no bullying has gone on. Gotcha.
