Nobody said we didn't want an apology, we just don't like Gawker's tone and the antics of its staff and crew. Don't be a piece of shit, it looks bad upon your company's image. That's why Intel left you; not because they're idiots, but because you are idiots. Intel and Adobe are bigger than Gawker -- they're international companies with bigger shit to worry about as well as in-house PR departments who know a problem when they see it. Gawker is chump change and isn't worth their time; I'm sure there are handfuls of other companies who'd be more than happy to advertise Adobe's software and not slander their readers and groups of people in the process. In the grand scheme of things, Gawker Media isn't worth anything; they aren't creating products that are powering computers or writing programs used by thousands of designers all over the world. Jesus, it's like an exercise in the Dunning-Kruger effect.

If Biddle wants to apologize, fine. Make an effort to not be a turd. Don't just say you're changing, prove it. Have some integrity. Oh, you can't do that? Time to yank another petal off of your flower of advertisers.

I'm in media. We have content providers that piss off sponsors, shit happens. You say something to them like "gosh, sorry you feel this way, we understand your decision, if you change your mind in the future please feel free to call any time blahblahblah" and you don't say A DAMN THING about it to your audience and they'll sometimes come back after a while when the heat's died down. But when you do bitchy shit to your audience those sponsors are never coming back.

That's just the thing, Gawker DOESNT live in the real world anymore. Gawker, Kotaku, any of these sites where the people on them are saying stupid shit on Twitter all don't live in the real world anymore, they live in hugbox echo-chambers, where no one is ever wrong and where everyone kisses their asses daily. So when they get sloppy and the unethical shit they're doing behind closed doors is exposed they have no idea how to properly handle it and lash out on Twitter forgetting that the rest of the world doesn't think they're hot shit and there are actual consequences to their actions. They have such inflated egos as well that prevents them from making rational choices so instead of saying "OK we fucked up and lost one lets try to keep the rest", they say "its all their fault, I'm right they're wrong and I need to tell everyone how this person/advertiser who bruised my ego is a big meanie", creating a downward spiral that will most likely lead to their demise
 
So is there an easy to follow list of developments in Gamergate. I am trying to explain to a friend what it is but this is one big clusterfuck.

We have the Quinspiracy, 5 Guys, Game Journalist Pros, The Fine Young Capitalist, Gawker Scandle. Keeping up with developments is making my head spin. One big clusterfuck.

I think one thing to help those outside the community understand the situation is explaining the historical context of why gamers don't trust their journalists. This did not just appear out of nowhere. Not everyone appreciates the suckage of gaming bloggers.

I want to say right now while the iron is hot that there is a right way and a wrong way to be more PC and inclusive in your media. I'm sure you know tons of examples of examples where developers of something bend the wrong way for the social justice crowd... So lets look at an example where they do it right!

Shadow Warrior! This game is awesome! So is its orignal, but I must also say that part of the humor of the original Shadow Warrior was... racism. The protagonist was named Lo Wang, it poked fun at asian culture in a xenophobic way, and Wang made cheesy one liners in a bad asian accent that I'll admit I found endearing. That... probobly says horrible things about me. So what does Flying Wild Hog do? They turn Lo Wang into a bad kung-fu jap-china stereotype into a badass mercenary. They keep the one liners, but make them less downright offensive. And yes! He still does say "Who wants some wang?" at one point!

And yet some of my friends still wont touch it because they think it caught the 'SJW Flu' as it were and results in a inoffensive and unfun mess. Naw, the games good. My point here is that its possible to be more culturally sensitive... without being overly washed-out in it.

Goddamnit, I remember the updated Shadow Warrior. It was a great case of crudeness being balanced with hilarity. The game took nothing seriously and was an insane, ridiculous romp that made fun of itself and FPS games in general, with weapons powered by pure madness. Any FPS where you can get a nuclear missile launcher virtually guaranteed to kill you as well is an instantaneous vote for awesome in my books, even if it's incredibly stupid. Because we need stupid sometimes.

For me, the right/wrong way example remains Aya Brea; I discussed why earlier in the thread, but Jesus FUCK. 2 games of being one of the best-concieved heroines in video gaming at the time, and then The Third Birthday turns her into a personality-free soulless sex-object who takes orders from male characters all game long, exists to essentially be eye-candy, and then, just to really give everyone who played the original 2 games the finger, brings back the original character for 2 minutes, so we can kill her.
 
Looking back on this I was a little worried about things once they brought the mainstream media into it but then I realized that they just used their supposed trump card and the only thing that it did was to make GG even bigger. Now they got nothing left now all I can do is sit back and kek at the money their hemorrhaging from losing their advertising and that their reputation is crashing and burning.

Damn now you reminded me of Parasite Eve 1&2, one thing about it that pulled me into it was how progressively batshit insane the stories would get as it went on the plot went on, I guess because I got a soft spot for games were they story decides to get really weird like MGS2, it's terrible compared to the other games but I remember way more because of the fucked up finale.

Okay I don't want to suddenly turn this topic into a shadow warrior sperg so I won't talk about it after this post, but I too loved the orignal Shadow Warrior, and Shadow Warrior Reboot is a worthy successor. I am pointing out that the orignal was... yeah, kinda racist. Oh, its a good game, but...

Now there are one or two gags in the reboot that could be classified as racist. I'm not going to lie. Theres an advert for Angry Birds somewhere that has the birds in rice-collector hats which while I don't really consider that racist, I can see other people saying that Flying Wild Hog is worse then hitler for it. Playing it right now, I just heard a gay joke, too.

I've been doing my best to stay away from the GamerGate coverage as of late. Why? Because I can openly admit that I'm a poor example of exercising moderation, and much like how I was when I first discovered forums, I find myself obsessively tracking it way more than I need to. Since I'm concerned about getting too wrapped up in it and getting nothing accomplished, I've even blacklisted some sites temporarily to stay away from the issue.

However, I'm really impressed with how adverse an effect the media smear had on GamerGate; the movement has not only inflicted major damage on Gawker, but may even stand to dismantle much of their gaming branch (Kotaku included) and actually institute the beginnings of lasting reform in gaming journalism. All that's required is for the opposition to continue being idiotic and for GG to keep sending emails calling them out on their bullshit.

Might actually write a few more myself, after they called Intel "craven idiots" and "pusillanimous morons". Seems like they need a second talk on how being malignant little shits nets you nothing at all.

Felicia Day posted on Tumblr about the GamerGate issue. She posted about her disagreement with GG but she's worried about the backlash. After that she was (supposedly) doxxed by the GG community in the comments.

Considering that there's a lot of accusations about GG doxxing women and some of them turned out to be false (EDIT: Controversial) like what happened to Brianna Wu, I'll take this with a grain of salt.

They are hoping to force a full-blown investigation. Curiously, Anti-GG does not seem to be on-board. I wonder why...?

Ongoing updates on the NPR thing:

It was a 3V1 vs. based Milo, but the man held his own. When they tried race-carding him, he kicked their asses with pure, hard facts. Suffice to say, they didn't let Milo talk very long, but then, the host made a fatal mistake: To accept calls. Suffice to say, Arthur Chu got his ass absolutely handed to him by Remi from NYS, who proceeded to bring up Chu's racism and starting the Tweetlikenotyourshield tag. Chu didn't have a coherent response and looked like an idiot. And now, TotalBiscuit is trying to call in.

They closed up before Biscuit could get on, but Milo did pretty outstanding for a 3v1. The syringe sending was brought up and the host did everything possible to direct away from actual issues. They collectively looked like a bunch of tools.

It painted a pretty ugly picture of anti-GG for a neutral party. The likes of Kyle and Chu kept screaming about misogyny and harassment, and every time they got shut down by Milo or a caller they acted particularly butthurt and then resumed the same attack vector.
