An Important message to our attendees from the Furcation Board of Directors

You may have seen some notes, messages and information shared around during Furcation 2024 following ‘drama’ at the convention.

Unfortunately, the rumours are true and we are not being welcomed back to the Furcation 2024 venue.

This puts us into huge uncertainty as for a 2025 event to run, we need to now start the search for a new home for Furcation. As such, it is possible we will need to put in place a break for 2025.

Our hosts were incredibly unhappy with a number of things that happened across the course of the weekend and we are 100% in agreement with them. Across the weekend, there were a couple of large, drug-fuelled organised adult “parties” that took place in
contravention with both our Code of Conduct and our Terms of Service with the venue. A number of people were asked to leave the site under a zero tolerance approach which is as it should be. Both parties were attended by 30/40+ people in small accommodation spaces and were reported in to us by other attendees who were concerned by them.

What has followed is that those removed from the event instead of taking personal responsibility for what they have done, have sought to destroy the event for daring to call them out for their poor behaviour. This has also been supported by an individual
within our senior staff team who has been leaking out confidential information and discussions from within our internal staff chats. No doubt a friend of theirs but too much of a coward to own up for it. Followed up with a barrage of false Tripadvisor
reviews, drama spread on Twitter and various other misinformation, our venue has indeed said they will not be allowing us to return for 2025. They have also since discovered that some individuals took to damaging/destroying their accommodation in retaliation which Furcation LTD will now have to foot the bill for.

To say that we are deeply disappointed is an understatement.

We feel we speak for the whole of the furry community when we say to those people and
their followers/supporters.

You are not welcome in this community

The furry fandom is not a place of hatred, bullying and harassment and we hope that those ‘celebrating’ their success are noticed and shunned by the wider community. The bad news for you is that this isn’t the end of Furcation. We’re not going to let hatred and bullying win. Far from it.

This appears to have been isolated down to a group of around 50-60 attendees and a lot of the supporters they have online have never even attended our events but feel they have a right to comment on it.

For those who have destroyed their accommodation, we will be forwarding your details to the police. This is criminal damage and it will be treated as such. You will also now be receiving a lifetime ban from any future events run by Furcation LTD.

For the rest of our attendees, we are sorry that your weekend experiences have been ruined by the minority. Our venue may have become a bit ‘itchy trigger finger’ in regard to the rest of the event but honestly, with what they had to break up over Saturday evening, we don’t blame them. As always, it’s the few that ruin it for the many.

Furcation will return, there is no doubt about it. What that will look like, we do not yet know. Most of our staff team haven’t even been home 24 hours before we’ve been put into a position of making this statement. We haven’t had chance to decompress and
review what took place or even to open the feedback forms for completion at this point.

And we do stand by our decision to not run the feedback panel on Monday. Given the events of the weekend, our staff team have been left feeling deflated, demoralised and angry at the abuse and harassment that has been shared following those groups being removed from site. Nobody should ever be in a position to receive hatred and abuse for doing their job and upholding standards, especially when we are all volunteers working to put together one thing.

A weekend for the community to come together in a safe space where they can have a great weekend spent in the company of friends.

For the majority of our attendees, we did just that. And for that majority, we will continue to do so.

Watch this space for news of future events.

And for those who support the people removed from our event.

Do not darken our doorstep. You are not welcome.

Why would they even need to give another explanation? Do building codes in the US not have occupancy limits? If it's anything even remotely close to the Canadian building code then ramming 10 people into every 2-bed hotel room is absolutely a fire code violation, the rest is frivolous beyond that.
Furcation takes place in the UK, not the US.

I guess Rainfurrest lives on in new forms. Yes I know Rainfurrest isn't the first but it's definitely the one that most people think of.

Bit of a question for those who have more experience in the history of furry conventions. I'm fairly sure these things have been around for decades from what I've heard. The furry fandom has always been about sexuality and stuff, but it seems like it's only been in the last ten years or so that conventions have gotten so bad that getting a venue and keeping it seems impossible.

Have furries gotten exponentially worse to the point where they're just too unruly to put into a hotel without the damn thing collapsing, or has this kind of thing been happening the entire time and there really hasn't been a way for people to know without the internet?
Maybe a mix of both? Just curious.
I think most of it is just the number of cons and the size of them have become so big that there is far less accountability.

Using Megaplex as an example, the first con in 2002 was 126 people. That's it. Most everyone knew each other and even if they didn't, the number of attendees was so small that if you stood out for a bad reason, everyone would remember. There was a "social cost" to being a dickhead with a reputation for trashing rooms or causing problems, and you'd be actively excluded from events.

Now, 22 years later, Megaplex is 7200 people. Nobody knows who you are and won't remember you the next day, so there's no "social cost" in being a total fuck up degenerate. Not only is it much easier to blend in, it is much easier to find people that will not just tolerate your behavior, but encourage it. And even if you did get to the point that your reputation was bad and the con noticed, who cares? There's 30+ other cons in the US alone. Fly to a different con and use a different name on your badge and you're effectively a clean slate.

I think you're right about the internet aspect as well. Now, everything is posted on Twitter or something for all to see and refer back to. Back then in the early days, you'd maybe hear about bad events through word-of-mouth on AIM or IRC or something and that's it, and only if someone chose to bring it up.

The sex isn't even unique to furry conventions, so I guess I see the focus on it as a bit hypocritical. Have any of you been to/around a work convention full of middle management types? Not only do they fuck as much as furries they're all cheating on their spouses too.

Every convention every fucking time.

How can you even look at any sexual thing you see going on at a furcon and then defend it by saying "But, but normies have sex at conventions too!".

Again, yiff in hell.

interestingly a lot of the earlier large furry fandom names were straight,
Spoilering because I know it's annoying to derail a thread with the millionth "why are they all gay?" post. I'm sure it's been said before, but I just had the thought that one reason the furry fandom is disproportionately gay is the same as the Catholic priesthood: the opportunity cost is higher for straights. Religious straight guys must give up having families for the priesthood, but gay guys wouldn't have had them anyway. Likewise, dating a furry is anathema to most straight women but (I'm guessing) not as big a deal to gay guys. Moreover, there are plenty of gay furries to date within the community but few straight female furries. So, you probably have a lot of straight guys out there who would have been furries had they not been afraid of hamstringing their chances on the dating market. Over time the association between furry and gay gets stronger, straight guys grow more hesitant from the fear of appearing gay, and a feedback loop is made. I get the impression there are more women involved these days than a decade or so ago; I wonder if the fandom will actually get straighter as it gets more mainstream and the increase in women encourages straight guys that being a furry doesn't automatically mean incel or prison gay. Non-furry women may also grow more tolerant, the same way being a Trekkie today is considered more normal than it was a few decades ago. In other words, maybe furries as a whole aren't as gay as they seem, but only the gay furries are willing to show up.

The one thing babyfurs claim to run exclusively and it's so badly run entire hotels shut down the conventions for high impact sexual behavior and drug abuse because the toddler touches don't want "drama" with drug addicts and sex addicts in the fandom that "explicitly isn't about drugs and sex"? Color me shocked.

POST THE DOX YOU FUCKING COWARDS

"it's just an isolated case of only like 60~70 people" lol lmao. Love to see it after playing 'fuck around find out' with their own venue. Normal ass people complaining about furries ruining everything they touch is the icing on the cake. I love the smoke alarm tweet, like it's some epic 'gotcha' and the fact that 99% of people just do not want to share space with the freaks goes right over their heads. Take a hint.
"it's not a fetish, bro! It's just a fandom like any other!"
I have always hated the phrase 'furry fandom'. Fandom of what? It's as broad and non-specific as saying you're part of the 'movie fandom'. It's retarded. I suppose "I'm a fan of movies, comics, and anything with walking animals with fuck-me eyes!' sounds too autistic to describe in polite company. I'll tell you what they are; animal fetishists.

Some background: Furcation doesn’t take place in a hotel, it takes place in a holiday park. Holiday parks are not a thing in the US, so imagine a trailer park on the coast usually populated by families on holiday, with additional on-site recreation facilities to support that, and you get the idea. There isn’t much demand for holiday parks outside the summer months, so an event like Furcation can book one inexpensively.

The upside of hosting a convention at a holiday park out of season is that larger groups of friends can all stay together in the same trailer, and there’s more space and opportunity to host private parties. The downside is that you’re being rained on continually in a remote coastal part of the UK where there’s no wifi.

Furcation had built up a good relationship with one particular chain of small holiday parks, but after the 2022 convention was heavily oversubscribed, they wanted to move to a larger park than that chain could provide. This was the first year at the new park, the weather was even worse than usual, and the park staff seem to have been proactive about breaking up parties larger than the capacity of the trailers (generally advertised as up to 8 people, compared with the 30-40 people supposedly attending each party). This meant the park owners discovered in great detail how the event diverged from their family-friendly image, making the outcome practically unavoidable.

It's not a fandom, for the reasons you specified. Instead, "furry" is a subculture. Always has been. They never had a unified work that they all enjoyed or referred to, it's always been about the aesthetics of it. That makes it a subculture by default. But while goths and metalheads, for example, display their association with the subculture in their clothing and music choices, furries do it by being so oversexualized even some gay men go "whoa, hey! Take it down a notch, will ya?".

I don't have much to contribute to the Furcation drama, but from some casual digging online, a lot of furries seem to be mixing up Furcation with Furcationland. They're two different events.

Furcation is the UK one we've been talking about, and Furcationland is held in Maine, usually around April-May. Other than the similar name, Furcationland doesn't have anything to do with this shit.

Furry AND British?
I don't get any tail whatsoever

This was my first thought as well. I was at a con in a hotel years ago and we moved up to someone's room because the bar closed; not for an orgy or anything, just to keep hanging out. After about 30 minutes the very flustered night manager turned up at the door and said this had to stop because other guests were complaining so we all called it a night, rather than immediately jumping on Twitter to slander the hotel for banning our 'cumdump party'.

TL;DR Every furry I have ever met was a creep and they fucking stink. TFD.

There are a lot of younger furries who are unfortunately not properly socialized, and who think that this behavior is acceptable. Some of them are victims of the pandemic lockdowns, but a lot of them were just coddled as children, and not taught how to behave in public. They learned to weaponize their socials, and either don't understand or don't care that there are actual people being hurt on the other side. They also don't understand how their behavior impacts vendor and business relationships of the events that they're attending.

It's honestly unfortunate for the convention to be at risk of full cancellation due to this behavior. Furries may be freaks and sexual deviants, but they shouldn't lose out on opportunities to have their own spaces purely because of internal sabotage from a bunch of poorly socialized idiots who don't understand consequences.
