This is why China will probably never win out in the end. They're woefully inept on the talent front, in terms of poaching talent and growing talent at home. Their university system is geared against innovation, the Chinese engineers who go abroad get higher salaries (and actually learn useful skills in the West) working for US/TW companies that CN can't match. Unless China changes domestically to actually be inviting to outsiders (US model) or changes domestically to do better with what they have (Japan model) they're SOL, and the govt is too stubborn to try either of these (if they even can)
China also cannot win in the long run because unlike America, it is not internally self sufficient. If the USA got a bloody nose and was forced to retreat back to North America for a century or two, with only Canada and Mexico as friends (hostages), it could absolutely do so. Even better, probably rebound even harder. North America is a fortress of unassailable might that the American people (in whatever configuration) will sit astride for thousands of years to come, unless some major strides are taken in space based weapons.

Yeah this. Once you got chip production up and running you can mass produce any number of designs at insane scales but getting there is some of the most complicated production processes in the world. It's not trivial even for large powers.

And that's exactly why the CCP invading Taiwan would be economically pointless. If the CCP invades, TSMC blows up their own plants, and the mainland chinks get nothing. The Chinese couldn't even make a domestically produced ballpoint pen start-to-finish until 2017. There is no way in hell they're in a position to build advanced chip fab facilities. And of course, as you correctly point out, making world-class GPUs and AI optimized processers involves a hell of a lot more than just cranking out chips. They are fundamentally incapable of operating independently in that space, end of story.
