Where the heck did Russell find this kind of pace all of a sudden?
My assumption: He ran with barely enough fuel to do one full run, he ran as late as possible (when the track is warmed up a tiny bit and much drier from prior traffic) and they charged his batteries while he was in the pits. I think they also went with the quickest engine mode.

Chances are, he's going to get eaten alive by the other teams in the first couple laps under race conditions, but it's a great show of force, which is certainly not lost on Mercedes.
It's also quite handy to showcase progress in the Williams team to its investors.

Since we're all guessing I'll throw in my 2p, the boy did two qualifying laps the first not using the battery (or at least not enough to need a recharge) getting a 2m 8s, then going for a full quali lap having tyres properly warmed up and recent experience of driving round fast. It was a gamble on one lap and it paid off.

Also I have heard whispers that Williams were on a wet set up but that was from a hambot so salt needed.

So hambots claim that Russel outperformed him by unfairly ... using a car with an appropriate setup?
By extenstion, this puts blame for shitty performance on Mercedes engineers.
Funny how the car's performance is only ever the team's fault when Hamilton has a shitty result.

Never forget, Hamilton screwing up in a restart by accidentally pushing a button that fucked up his brakes was not a "mistake". These clowns sure are something else.

A williams carrying over 10kph more than the title contenders at Spa in the wet through a corner.

And the Lap

If the Race is wet I see a top 5 finish on the cards.

Hambots are by far the worst fans of the sport. They will go out of their way to excuse whatever stupid bullshit he gets up to and accuse FIA of bias whenever he gets a 5 second that others would get a 10 for. No credit ever given to how much work Merc does with their car development or their consistently good race strategies.

So the cat is out of the bag: Russell will replace Bottas next season. Looks like order 66 was not enough to save Bottas. Jokes aside accordibng to wolff the decision was made before Spa. Will be interesting to see how Russell deals with Hamilton. Imagine the young gun beating the fuck out of the old champion

Not doubting you on George in the Merc (they'd be dumb not to take him now), but it hasn't been officially announced right? Toto just said they made the decision but didn't say what it is. I didn't see any big headline confirming it.

Also, what do you think we are in for at start? Delay? Pussy start under safety car after 10 laps or as they are the greatest drivers in the world, the normal start procedure? The drivers should be listened to as they are the best judge.

Did Perez just bin it??

Yes, not the best thing to do at the time and can't be fixed...

RIP red bull baby in the fantasy.

Maybe waiting till Bottas has a seat so it doesn't look like they are just booting him out.

Wouldn't be upset if it's a rolling start (if they even have it in the rules) but fuck starting behind the safety car for several laps till a dry line apears.

Would be interesting if there will be points should the race not be started. This situation is compolelty new to Formula 1. Perhaps half the points for the starting formation?

And I have to correct myself: 1985 the race in spa (what a coincidence) was not started and repeated a few months later in the same year

There are two things worth looking into if we need to reduce scenarios like this in the future:

1. Allow people to do set-up changes on sunday IF given permission by the race director as a result of the weather changing the circumstance.

2. Proper monsoon tires for very wet conditions like this.
