Russell thinks with the new FIa regulations which will become active from SPA onwards they will be able to fight for wins. Would be funny if they suddenly fell down the pecking order again. Also Ferrari is willing to veto the changes the FIA will introduce for 2023 like changing the floor of the car and so on. Fun times ahead. I for one hope that Mercedes won't win a single race this year. But I fear luck will give Mercedes at least one win before the season is over.

I find Hamilton insufferable, but there is no way he could seriously be described as a "mediocre driver".

I don't think Hamilton is in the Top 5 drivers of all time, but it is arguable that he could be in the Top 10.

Max and Hamilton will never be able to race in equal machinery, as Lewis is getting too old and is past his best, whilst Max is either in his prime or not far away from it.

Right now, Max would destroy Hamilton in equal machinery.
His skill definitely atrophied once no-one could compete against him though. The Hamilton that brought the shitheap 2009 car to a victory would have trounced the 2020 Hamilton. 2021 was a massive kick up the ass in comparison.

2015 - 2016 on the other hand, both Merc drivers could afford to drive as sloppily as they wanted, since no-one could compete. Once Nico had essentially locked Hamilton out of the championship, he stopped giving a shit and happily drove the final third of the season as a second driver, putting up zero fight. Spain 2016 would never have happened at a team that actually had to fight for its wins.

Mercedes does not deserve another win until Toto packs his shit and takes his favorite shitpacker right back home with him.
Wait... that would mean Hamilton moves closer to me... FUUUUU

Of course they will, the FIA probably consulted with Mercedes engineers and Toto before they even put anything together. Wouldn't be the first time Mercedes has been involved in setting technical directives that just happen to benefit them the most. The FIA under Todt became a shell of itself and FOM without Bernie telling them to shut up and do what he says, Toto moved right into that vacuum and still has disproportionate power in the sport.

In order news yet another F1 team failing to vet who it gives VIP treatment to.

Off the top of my head:
  • The switch to V6 engines
  • Red Bull's active aero
  • Ferrari's 2019 engine
  • DAS not being outlawed
  • Pit stop minimum time limits
Are all things Mercedes lobbied for and won out.

The switch to V6 engines
That was actually Adrian Newey and Red Bull. The original plan for turbo-hybrid was to drop down to a inline four, but Newey argued (correctly) that a V6 configuration would allow you to use the engine as a stressed member, whereas an inline four would require the use of a space frame. He was taking a page from Colin Chapman and the Lotus 49 there.

Obviously, like so many other people, I wish they would have stayed with naturally aspirated engines with larger displacements, and not this turbo hybrid shit, but Newey had the least bad of the bad proposals since the FIA was dead set on going hybrid.

Indycar's going to a simpler but still hybrid system. And the whys for that are probably why F1 sticks with it. The manufacturers want it to make like they're developing EV tech. Lookin' all 'green'.

Absolutely. Motorsports are being subjected to the same political and social forces as everything else. And it's been that way for a while.

- No more tobacco advertising.
- No more grid girls.
- No more Confederate flags at NASCAR.
- Lewis Hamilton is BLACK JESUS, and you WILL respect him white scum!
- Danica Patrick was so stunning and brave (even though she objectively sucked).
- We drive hybrids!

It's probably only gonna get worse. I have this crazy conspiracy theory that Formula E is a trial attempt to see if they can actually replace Formula 1 with it. That will be a dark day.

We took a long drive to start our vacation yesterday. I was explaining to the SO exactly how hard motorsports was fucked by the end of tobacco. I suspect that now, almost 20 years on we're really starting to see the effects - Indycar barely filled the field for the 500 this year, and Kyle Busch in Cup seemingly unable to get a sponsor commensurate with his past performance/talent level.

F1 has been slower to feel the hit, IMO because:
  • Ridiculous levels of manufacturer investment
  • Revolving door of rich sponsor/owner combos (Vijay, Mr. Stroll, Gene Haas....)
  • Tobacco's still fucking there (although I ask - nay plead - anyone to tell me how the fuck Mission Winnow is supposed to sell cigarettes, I can't wrap my head around it.)
But yeah, the pressures are there. Bubba Wallace (again, for those who don't follow left turns, he's the Black NASCAR Guy) re-signed his deal the other day and the entirety of Cup was gushing over the "ESG Impact" of this. And like... that's not racing, what does it have to do with racing?

(I don't really care about grid girls, that's not 'racing' to me either, but I respect those for whom it is part of the deal.)

We need a Ted Turner/Tony Khan figure in automotive racing, someone with tens/hundreds of millions to throw away. EuroBOSS is too unrestricted and unpublicised.

Imagine if we could have an international open wheeled series free from the FIA's grasp, with a few car manufacturers' interest. Start small, with the "customer" Avon tyres that most classic F1 cars use, LS V8 engines, pre-built tubs from Dallara etc. and attract a few big names. Get a TV deal, title sponsors, and some track owners as well as some support series to drum up interest.

Actually Phillip Morris (Marlboro) left Ferrari starting this year, all that's left are vape companies. It wasn't just Mission Winnow what upset people but Marlboro having control over the Ferrari paint job, sponsors and sponsor placement, like how could a Kasperkey logo over a certain shade of red(or white) make people go 'I need a fag'.

Fun thing to do if you see anyone complain about Mission Winnow ask them what smokeless products PMI makes...

Brand awareness. Mission Winnow appears as a sponsor, and people look into Mission Winnow and realise it's just Marlboro hiding behind a shell company. Et voila, you've just remembered that Marlboro exists and is a longtime Ferrari sponsor, and if you ever fancy taking up smoking a brand name to ask for has just been planted in your mind.

Even without the wordage, your profile picture of the red chevron on top of a white box/triangle is enough to tell anyone looking at it what it represents.

ESG logic is banning Mission Winnow for being connected to tobacco while alcohol, fast food, and dictatorial regimes are allowed to sponsor cars. Because tobacco is the only thing that will kill you.

For once I would be happier if I was European and turned up my nose at left turns. For those who don't watch Nascar, Bubba Wallace is basically Lewis Hamilton without any talent. He finishes 15th every week in equipment that should be contending for wins and yet the company loves him and puts him front and center in every ad. They banned spectators from bringing in Confederate flags because he and he alone whined about it. They've allowed him to get away with quite a few rule breaks, such as cutting a corner at Indy and gaining 10 spots without penalty. Sponsors are tripping over each other to sponsor him while good drivers never make it out of Trucks because they don't have the money. Meanwhile the company astroturfs this guy as the "most popular driver" because he is black (enough) and woke and he brings so much money because of ESG he can essentially race forever until he gets tired of it and decides to go be a full-time Kaepernick.

I'm so tired of it...I'm tired of everything being propaganda these days...

Case in point, Vettel during the Leaf GP where he called out the Alberta oil sands for being "unethical" and "a crime" even though it's probably one of the more ethically sourced oil/gas operations on the planet, while he himself carries the logo of Aramco on his suit and on his car. It doesn't have to make sense, the logic doesn't have to work. It just has to look pretty and make the "correct" statement.

Reminds me of a driver in F1, his name escapes me at the moment.

You could literally replace certain words in your post with "signs that say mean things about him", "Bahrain over 20 times without penalty until his championship rival did the same" and "F2" and you'd still be mostly right.

Off topic but I started to get into MotoGP and watching a video of the riders describing it and I've never heard F1 drivers talk about how much they love being in the car. Every single MotoGP rider said "I love being on my bike, it's the best feeling in the world, when I wake up and know I get to ride I'm having a great day."

Just kinda interesting how much these guys love their profession
