OG Top Gear presenter and F1 reject Tiff Needell was recently on The Intercooler podcast (which is an excellent pod btw). He has some thoughts regarding the current state of F1.

Video starts from the F1 2024 segment, but the whole episode is worth a listen:


tl;dw: F1 needs more teams, the performance gap between the best and worst cars is too small, and IndyCar is better to watch than F1.
 
Lots of rumours the last day or two that alpine is considering selling to andretti. I think it's horseshit, typical journo bullshit after two bad races and a lull in news because of the extra week between races. I don't like or dislike alpine, i just don't think it's true but YMMV

On one hand, the French are stubborn and fiercely parochial. On the other hand, they're a bunch of cheese eating surrender monkeys. I'm 50:50 on this one.

edit; for context. turns 9 and 10, bottas has spun, and russel almost lost it but recovered. turn 6 or 7, albon got on the kerb and it looked like the car bottomed out, snapped into the wall. he's fine, mucho debris

Didn't watch P1, but did watch Supercars.

Confirmed there is not a spare, unknown as yet if it's truly fucked.

Pretty brutal for Sargeant. Guess that lowers the chances of restart shenanigans this year.
 
Plot Twist: Albon will crash Sargeant's car at the race too and to make it extra twisty at the same place on track too

brutal for sargeant and well done to him for taking it so well. shame williams are a joke and can't bring a spare car when, you know, sargeant drives for you. turn one just won't be as fun on sunday morning

just to piss you off even more, williams gets an extra 10m per season for being a historic team (ferrari gets 60!).

IMO the FAI should step in and fine williams or threaten to remove their spot. it looks bad on the sport (even though it's a decision made from a sporting perspective) and of course, it happens to involve an american driver who for a change, dindu nuffin
 
I like Alex and he's clearly much better than his teammate, not sure I would've given him the freedom car though. He crashed it in free practice and should take the L. Close to the end of the season maybe it would be different, but they decided to stick with Sergeant and are now writing him off completely at race 3 of 24.

Also he'll have to work out the miles to kilometers on the steering wheel all race.

This season is a worse start for merc than the past couple of seasons. Considering "hurr worst car ever, totally wrong concept" it's pretty hilarious. Especially because after all ham's complaining about not listening to him they have made such a public showing of listening to him and doing exactly what he wanted. Even funnier that Russell is showing him up.

On Albon Sergeant thing, of course you ditch the token yank that liberty told the teams they had to find for the actually credible driver. The cope on reddit about sergeant being there on merit is hilarious, he's usually dead last while Albon is in the points.
