Monaco is going to be fun this year. If these cars are a handful in confined spaces and slow corners they're going to have to really work for it there. That plus it is definitely not a smooth surface being a road and all. They're going to have to weld the drains down very well since most of the downforce on these cars is now grand affect ie sucking the floor of the car and the track surface together.
Monaco is a few months down the road though. I'd wager that most teams will then have figured out how to create enough downforce. Though in Mclaren's case that might be different as Norris stated that the entire car is basically shit. Maybe they can shine on high Speed tracks like Monza where downforce is not needed but most F1 tracks aren't exactly Speed circuits. Oh and don't forget Baku and Singapore. Or Hungary the "Monaco without a city" race track

One of The Race journalists provided the following:
"An early batch of power unit changes has been confirmed by the FIA. In addition to a new V6, Alonso has a new MGU-H, turbocharger and exhaust system.

Sergio Perez takes a new turbocharger and MGU-H.

Pierre Gasly takes a new V6, MGU-H, turbocharger, MGU-K (the component that failed in Bahrain), energy store, control electronics and exhaust system."

Imagine seeing no cars on track because their replacement stocks are depleted thanks to the budget cap. Though is this really covered by the budget cap?

Though interesting side note: if there are problems in the engines the manufacturers can ask the FIa to make updates to give their engines more reliability. I think that is the one exception to the engine freeze

F1 awaiting official explanation for large smoke cloud seen during practice

Posted on 25th March 2022, 16:29 | Written by Keith Collantine and Claire Cottingham

Formula 1 is awaiting an official explanation for the cause of a large smoke cloud which was visible during the first practice session at Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

Thick black smoke became visible from parts of the track around halfway through the opening hour of running, which began at 5pm local time. A fire at a nearby oil depot is believed to be the cause.

An F1 spokesperson told RaceFans they are awaiting official details on the cause of today’s fire. “The position at the moment is that we are waiting for further information from the authorities on what has happened.”

Max Verstappen told his team on the radio during the session he had noticed a burning smell. His team advised him they did not believe the cause was his car.

Last week a Yemeni rebel group attacked several sites in the country including a Saudi Aramco petroleum distribution centre in Jeddah.

Yup Yemeni "rebels" have taken credit.

Not really "rebels" though if they're people you're in active war with. You fuck around in someone else's civil war (which is basically a proxy war) then you can't cry if shit rains back on you.

Shouldn't really be a suprise to the FIA. A Yemeni rocket attack happened during some formula E event there a couple of years ago too. Go to an active warzone you take that risk. Here's the article from then.

As they say: Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
When you accept bribe money by a literal shithole dictator to race on their blood-tinted soil, you might end up with a bit of a spectacle when someone goes ALLAHU ACKBAR within view of the track. Imagine the race needs to be aborted cause some dude in a bomb-vest jumped on track.

Even better reports say it was a drone attack. The whole Yemeni thing is a little more advanced than the yank forever wars. It's a Saudi vs Iran proxy war.

Yeah, you kind of wonder if the "rebels" warned FIA not to continue to race after today or they will target the track. I mean when someone calls in a bomb threat to any establishment, they take it serious and evacuate the premises. Would FIA shut the event down if a threat was made? Would they take it seriously? One would hope so.

What a fucking fiasco/disaster this may end up being if there was a threat to attack the track/race.

If there wasn't such a fucking hunger/thirst from the higher ups who control the various entities involved in an F1 event to make even more money than they already do, we wouldn't be going to all these fucking clown countries. I am sure if fatso in North Korea made a huge offer for a race there, they'd probably seriously consider and discuss it! Just fucking stupid. Greed always fucks shit up. The overriding reason they want to have 25, possibly 30 races, in a year is money. If they were not going to make bank they wouldn't be doing it. I am waiting for the first 1 billion contract to be signed in pro sports. It won't be too much longer before it happens. What was Max's new one, something like $250-300 mil? Some baseball player few months back signed a 3 year $140+ mil deal I think it was.

Seriously, when will a ceiling ever be reached with respect to some of the astronomical dollar figures involved in so many aspects of society.

During WW2, British golfing clubs had special rules regarding the effects of bombs and explosions on active play.
For instance, when an explosion obliterated or misplaced you ball, you were allowed to place a new one where the old one originally lay. If that happened to be impossible due to a crater, you were allowed to put the ball down outside of the crater in an equal distance to the hole you were playing.

Maybe FIA needs similar rules in case of a drone strike destroying a PU and how that interacts with the cost-cap.

I think this was just a great target for a double win.

It makes the international media. something the Yemeni conflict rarely does because America and Britain are suppling Saudi who are then committing various atrocities with them and the America nominated good guys can never be exposed as actually pretty shit.

It also hits a strategic target. Blasting an oil storage depot is going to hurt Saudi. Their entire economy is oil exports, any damage you can do to that damaged them.

I doubt they would target the actual race because any collateral right there on live TV in the west would be all the causes belli murica and friends would need to go stomping in.

In the event of a drone strike or other catastrophic event, the red flag shall be thrown and all cars will stop in the pit-lane. All competitors will be allowed to change tires or change parts for identical copies depending on FIA approval.

Picture the following:
IT IS LIGHTS OUT AND AWAY WE GO! OH AND ALLAHU AKBAR INTO TURN ONE! AND ITS HAPPENED IMMEDIATELY!

Of course we don't want that to happen, but that would make Formula 1 turn into Formula K, because with the kino ending of last year and the kino ending of the 1st race, the kino can only keep escalating.

So then we get the thrilling Vettel (because not there) vs Latifi (because 100 m behind already going into turn 1) championship fight for the season.

LOL, this is what happened when MBS is trying to play fire with US. Saudi's Intelligence is shit, they're full of lazy and corrupt people. They try to act tough against US once and this happened

I guess this is why the King shouldn't have chosen MBS as heir, he's just too hot-headed and ambitious
