There was something tactile about, for example, when Jimmy won the right to go outside for a bit. Watching him dress up and leave through the basement, then come back in and talk about the sky being green and seeing police was neat. And the time the reward was to make the winners sleep in a "winner's room" was neat because it messed with the dynamic for a little bit. And a punishment like Oliver having to clean the nest they made for Chris was neat.Sam's already mentioned multiple times during S2 that he doesn't like the cash challenges, and that they make the contestants not care as much. Odds are they'll probably just use chips or some shit like that. Whether that's an excuse to pay people less probably remains to be seen.
Conversely, a reward like steak, which involves just eating, or a punishment like being stuck in the doghouse is not interesting to watch. Duany'ay was the only one who made Shut Up Bag interesting to watch because he would switch to using flamboyant hand gestures to get his point across. Otherwise it would only be good in really specific instances, like the time Abi was whining and Vance came up and put a shut up bag on her then TJ came up and started trying to comfort her and they shut up bagged him and then Duany'ay came upstairs and the three of them in the same shot looked like an A24 movie.
I'm gonna sound very nerdy making this comparison but in video games, especially MMOs, there has been a move away from stunlocking/movement impairing abilities because by design they aren't fun. I think the same is just generally true for Fishtank.
Most rewards should be something like, you and your team get wine and grapes and the other team can't enter the winner's room for a while, or you get to play on a slip n' slide or play on a pool table for the evening. And punishments need favor cleaning, or cooking for the other fish, or assembling furniture for the basement, and not just sitting quiet and perfectly still for hours.
