So no wonder he was panicking, the first explanation would be that he was brought in to get made fun of and instantly eliminated.

The original plan was probably to introduce him as a freeloader later in the show, and he'd become the cult leader. Black Frank was cut, so they asked him to fill in, and told him he was the plant. Nothing was spoken in the basement so the plotline stuff was less obvious, it was all discussed prior to the show's start. Brian's understanding then, was that there wasn't a plant prior to him filling in last minute. When the first plotline is that there's an "infiltrator," he thought he'd been setup, like you said, to be made fun of and instantly eliminated. Then the "everyone is a plant" plotline got revealed, he realized he wasn't any more of a plant than anyone else, and showed more relief than anyone else. Then he didn't understand what he was supposed to do: If he was a freeloader, and being paid, he probably thought he wasn't allowed to win, and the cult plotline was clearly not going in the way they'd previously discussed with him. It's probably why he was so proud of finding ways to get the audience to hate him, too: his goal wasn't to win, it was to contribute to the "story," and part of that was probably getting the audience to hate the evil cult leader while also winning over the fish.

The romance thing was probably part of the cult leader plot, too, now that I think about it: Trish may have also been a plant, which is why they were so straight forward about rigging it against her. It's probably also why they kept her around: they were friends with her and had hired her to be the cult leader's concubine. Probably why Brian ended up back at the end, too, the "psycho killer" bit might have been recycled from the cult leader plot.

It's an interesting idea but it's just far-fetched and requires way more forethought than we can expect from the wiggers. Jet even said they only picked Brian at the last minute - they were just sitting downstairs watching rapid-fire application videos after Black Frank was cut and his was the first one that made them laugh (he said "I have a degree in broadcasting, so I work at Texas Roadhouse")

When they brought Brian and Trish upstairs to the attic the first time, that was I think the first time he was ever tapped to do anything cult-leaderish. And I think they did it to give both him and Trish a fighting chance as they were both doing so terribly in the endorsements it was an opportunity to give them a feather and make the audience reevaluate them. He and Trish discussed it afterwards and Brian's guess about why they were brought up there was he thought it was a literal hiring process to join the wiggers (sam did literally say, downstairs is the audition, up here is where the game begins, or something along those lines). He wasn't like, aha, I'm the cult leader, I'm activated now, or any number of things he would've been totally greenlit to say in a room alone or with Trish.

I'm pretty sure he was just calling the cast pussies, also. He called them pussies again when he returned to say bye to Jimmy. They were, in his view, too scared to stand out by doing interesting things, and to mess with each other, and that's something he said explicitly as why they were pussies and Jimmy wasn't one.
