With a (questionable) W from James Drake, how would you rate season 5 of Fishtank?

  • 1 Star — Absolute disaster. Unwatchable, boring, production fucked it up bad, the fish were lame

I wouldn't go as far as to say "the cast was shit," just that even though they were able to pull together some crazy personalities, a solid majority either quit earlier than they should have or tried to sleep through the show to win it. They had standouts but on the whole the casting wasn't lucky.

They need strivers and clout chasers who they can punish. Letty was a lucky get because she evidently hates clout but was just having fun in a regimented, stimulating environment unlike whatever depressing things she does at home. But normal people need to actually give a fuck about the carrot at the end of the show in order to be interesting and that wasn't most of the s1 cast.

I hope they make good on the larger prize pool, normal people wouldn't typically deal with the level of abuse that Letty and less so Sylvia got.

Also perhaps they could try treating the men a little more harshly this season? I only bring up the topic of gender because save for Josie, Letty and Sylvia didn't really have it easy when compared to the other men in the show and ft chat was just an incel wet dream, they had so much sway in the direction the show would go in. My concern is that if its a majority male cast, s2 will just end up being total Jet buddy sim since ft chat wants to buddy up with the bois. But if you go half and half the risk there is the female contestants catch onto how easy the males will have it and they'll just be more likely to collectively give up early since the game is gonna be rigged.

He said it himself in one of the podcasts before the show started. Pretty sure he was talking to Nick and mentioned that he was hoping to sell it to a network when it was finished. That's why it was a surprise when he walked in on the first day and said hard R nigger, as if he was intentionally sabotaging his own chances, as he's known to do. I don't think it was ever a super serious idea but he definitely was considering it a possibility and so was Jet. I'm not making it up but I would need to sift through possibly six 2+ hour podcasts to find the the thirty second clip.

Sam had big plans for FT before it launched and when it wrapped he said he was going to do ten more seasons. He probably doesn't feel that enthusiastic about it anymore.

Sounds like from what you are saying Noble Redditor it's something he just said off the cuff but was never serious about. Like you said the fact he was dropping hard N's nearly from the first day meant he had pretty much given up on that idea by the time the show started.

Jon definitely isn't the type to know how to use a semicolon properly. Many theorize he uses ChatGPT any time that his writing looks coherent. He has posted some poems and shit before which seemed AI written.

I took it as him truly considering it an honest possibility. I'm not trying to take a big stance on it either way, I'm just going off my memory which could be wrong, and I can't prove it so I guess it doesn't really matter. He was thinking that the edited cut could stand on its own, separate from the livestream, and would be successful outside of the usual MDE sphere.

This. Holy fuck the whole self-defense diatribe about lights, shadows, whole foods, horses and cougar analogy was just bizarre. I genuinely love the way Chris behaves. And yeah as people have said in this thread the episodes are getting better and Jet finally got around to putting out 1 hour long episodes, one thing I don't understand is why make the extras have less editing in them just because, I feel they could at least put subtitles but apparently Jet and the other editors just don't feel like it.

While I don't like Jet myself I think a bone should be thrown to him at least when considering his reaction to criticism. He is an amateur who's young and in his 20's going up against a torrent of criticism as the head of a major project for the first time. I don't think its farfetched to say he's not very well equipped to properly deal with that as its very likely nobody thinks to prepare you for that aspect of putting yourself in the spotlight. I hope he gets a small moment to catch his breath so he can recover, reflect, and improve.

I've been thinking a lot about this. I've seen a handful of youtube fishtank recap videos and most of them are really enjoyable. A good edit of the livestream would come out of a fan initiative most certainly. Jet seems to think a lot about what HE finds funny and not what WE find funny, when in reality it should be a healthy mix of both.

At least Jets admitting he screwed up. I watched the first four episodes the other night and he really missed a ton of the greatest hits. I think the show misses a lot without watching live either in this thread or just talking with friends about it. Even though Jets been a bitch and an asshole lately I haven't given up hope, fingers crossed that season 2 hits the ground running.

He should genuinely consider rebooting. Scrapping what's here and starting over. Too much has been fucked up. Six episodes to make an okay but flawed episode is not acceptable. Frank said that Jet fired his editor. Stupid move as Frank's editor is what saves his content.

That's really weird, I imagine going through a 6 weeks worth of steady footage would take a lot of people. I remember when fishtank wrapped up there were a couple youtubers that did a recap of all the major events and some of them were really good. Maybe he could wrap this up and just make a 3 hour movie or something. I feel like this is the sort of thing people are going to binge watch anyway.

I'd give him more credit if it didn't take Frank confronting him somewhat publicly over things the viewers & fans have been rightfully criticizing him for months for which he deflected from and began insulting them and has been just absolutely seething over.

I think that’s the best apology we can really expect out of him, he’s not the kind of guy that would get down on his knees and beg for forgiveness.
It was nice that even after Sam gave his excuse (which honestly was a better one than “still learning”), Jet said they do have paying customers while looking over to Sam as if he felt the line wasn’t completely approved.
