Opinions might have softened enough that contrarian retards can start talking about how Fates is some unappreciated masterpiece and not get immediately shut down,
Hey, I believe you mispronounced “based gameplay enjoyers”. Ive talked ITT enough about it, but il say it again. friendship and partner deals are by far the best gameplay element this series has ever had, giving an additional tactical and creative benefit (the reward that we all like) from building supports (that thing we all like to do). Especially the incentive to get same gender supports is really cool because that basically doesn’t exist in any other game like that, getting non-paired ending supports in GBA just feels like a waste until I’ve played the game enough times to have every paired ending.

The story itself, as is, is atrocious I’m not gonna defend it. The supports actually get a bad rap though. The main royals, and especially Azura, are the least interesting people in the cast for supports. But if you do any support that isn’t “a royal marries their own retainer” you are very likely to strike gold. The royals marry their retainer supports are generally ass, but seriously anything else is as good or better than Awakenings.

Beruka!Arther, Saizo!Felicia and Mitama!Dwyer come to mind off hand, but really I think most of them are pretty good. Branch out from Corrin and Azura supports, there’s a lot of gold in there.

I think you guys are very alienated from FE’s fanbase if you’re thinking Tharja is hated and that Sylvain is overly-criticized.
Well it's not like we actually had much reason to hate the rest of the cast. I personally think that Sylvain's attempts at selling himself is kind of funny, along with the way how Ferdinand and Lorenz carries themselves as the future of their respective countries.

Anything that's involves Arthur is bound to put a smile on your face.

My default view as well. Don’t get me wrong, I would have *expected* Sylvain to be criticized more but he isn’t. Ironically I do think, if he was a more realistic character, he would be quite awful as a person. So, in my view, it proves these people just have bad judgment.

I've watched this happen in real time on three separate occasions.

First with Awakening, then 3H and only now Fates.

Awakening was obviously panned by veterans of the series while newcomers enjoyed it, we all know how it went.
3H was the first console FE we had since Radiant Dawn. At first it was well received but then it was panned too due to how annoying the monastery it and characters like Bernadetta were complained about too.
Now every character has a dedicated fanclub.

It didn't take too long for opinions to flip on Awakening and 3H but for Fates it really took until now for shit like this to pop up.

Fates was panned pretty much from the start due to avatar worshipping and the entire plot revolving around Corrin, the lackluster set of characters that mostly comprised of royals and their retainers and lackluster or extremely annoying gameplay in Birthright and Revelations respectively.
Only Conquest received some well deserved praise for its gameplay and I was one of those voices who defended it.

Now i've seen this sort of shitposting war between Speedwing and Mangs where Mangs says how shit Revelations is and Speedwing makes response videos. Like Mangs brought up that Revelations has characters join who are then not able to damage the enemy, Speedwing then made a video about stacking a bunch of stuff for multiple turns on that character who was then able to do 7 Damage.

I honestly am not sure if it's entirely shitposting on Speedwing's side, he does seem retarded enough to think there is some truth to what he is saying.

Just gonna link both videos here for your perusal.

I think there are a few things to this process, we as veterans get upset with the new thing pretty easily, probably more so in ye olden days than now. I think as the oldfags spend more time with it, the more we find things we actually appreciate.

I actually always liked awakening even if I wish I got a Tellius style game instead at the time. Today I actually think I like it less than I did back then, but that’s just a change in what I value from it and how I interact with the series now, not that the charecters are worse or anything. I just don’t like how much it forces grinding or incentives having one or two super soldiers when back then I found that gameplay fun to make goofy builds with.

I was coping and seething about Masturfates cum brains when it was a new game, because it brought a certain insufferable group of people in. With “those people” more or less having moved on, and having long since accepted that the avatar worship sucks but isn't worth getting mad over in 2025, what I found myself left with is some of the most fun you can have in the series. It’s a LOT of astrisks to say “ignore the story and every main charecter and don’t try too hard and then you can have fun” so I can’t call it a masterpiece. I can call it fun when you don’t have a redditor in your ear cooming to Camilla or a Kagafag telling you that you should “just play gaiden bro”

3H to me comes down to Fatigue. When it was new, In order to participate in the discourse of the day, you had to have completed every route. Which ment literally playing the same exact game 4 times with like three chapters different per playthrough. That fucking sucked. I digested so much 3H in that time that the minute problems with 3H became major problems. The monestary is ok the first playthrough. By the fourth I wanted to shoot myself. Now that it’s current year and there’s no reason why I have to play all 4 routes in the span of 3 months to keep up with the community, it’s a perfectly fine game. Not my favorite, but it’s pretty good. I don’t think il ever truly recover from the day 1 binge of it enough to ever want to play it again unless someone else I know is trying it out for the first time.

So, just how bad can the writing for those romhacks can get?
Morrow's Golden Country is about a lordling from a place called Dalst and you'll probably never figure out where Dalst is on the map unless your eyes are glued to the screen, because it's covered by the text box after half a second. Later on the map just removes the countries' names from the map entirely, so at that point even gluing your eyes to the screen isn't good enough. Good thing they put pronouns in the game before ironing that out, because it's really important to know that all of the bosses for the first dozen hours of the game are both white and cisheteronormative. In the game where your dark mage is a black guy like South Park Stick of Truth.

Like Mangs brought up that Revelations has characters join who are then not able to damage the enemy
0/0x2 on join isn't at all unique to Rev (Kaga loves doing that shit btw), and non-Fates games usually don't even give you a fraction of the tools Fates does to damage fix. Mia is not a terrible unit on PoR Maniac because she doesn't damage armor knights on join, and she doesn't have the privilege of being in a game where you can immediately shore up the difference with tonics, forges, auras, or strong dual strikes in attack stance. Units in Fates do not exist in a bubble, combat does not take place in a stat page, and Fuga's map in particular is one where unless you're a giga sweatlord, you will be forced into positions where you have to adapt and improvise on the fly.

I ultimately agree with Speedwing, but the conceit of the argument is fucking stupid and boomer brain from the start because they both fixate specifically on bases and ignore that there's en entire paralogue available at that point to feed them 3-4 levels and get a C support with Corrin for an additional +2 attack from personal skill. And also, there are other units on the map with lower defense that the shitters can fight. Lunatic Rev Oni Savages are like knights; they have defense values (15) that you don't see until promoted enemies on midgame of Conquest. They also have 3 resistance. You have an overlevelled Corrin with a dragonstone and Felicia with tomes if you reclassed her. Ignoring them is like ignoring Marcus in FE6 HM. USE FUCKING DUAL STRIKES NIGGA THIS GAME IS NOT JUST BASE STATS AND WEAPON TRIANGLE.

So because there was badly designed units who cannot really contribute 10 years ago in the series its okay for there to be badly designed units who cannot really contribute now?
I would make an exception for Est type characters as them being useless at first is kind of their thing but a regular unit like Hana that you get in a chapter should be able to contribute in said chapter.

I am genuinely bewildered by this take, Mia doesn't even do 0 damage to the first enemy she faces either, what is this?

You have to spend several turns and unit actions and an entire unit to pair up to her to get Hana up to Mia Hard Mode standards, how is that in any way shape or form a good thing?
And even then she does like 7 damage and dies in two hits anyway, even with all the help you can get her she is still essentially unusable the moment you get her.

I honestly cannot think of a single other case where a normal unit joins you for a chapter and they're just immediately useless on the hardest difficulty.
Well come to think of it some characters in FE11/FE12 may fall into this tier of uselessness but again, new games should kink out these kind of issues, not patchwork them.

Hey, I believe you mispronounced “based gameplay enjoyers”.
I'm specifically talking about people's perception of the characters and writing. I don't think anyone really ever argued that Conquest didn't have really good gameplay, but that's still only 1/3rd of Fates. The characters being better in supports is a bit of a tautology, but it also puts the story writing in a worse light (see Xander).

I liked Awakening when it first came out, but because I viewed it more as a love letter to stuff I enjoyed from the series rather than a serious challenge in its own right. I probably wound up playing more of Awakening than any other FE game by virtue of how casual it was - I could pick it up and set it down every few days and grind out a few supports with the random battles. Doing a serious playthrough of it in 2022-2023 for its ten year made me appreciate it more just for how you can feel the actual passion the people making it had for FE as a series, compared to Engage which felt like the product of the Heroes skinner box.

The royals marry their retainer supports are generally ass, but seriously anything else is as good or better than Awakenings.
The only one I ever did that for was Oroboro and Takumi, mostly because she seems to not be put off by him being a whiny git, so that I don't have to think about whichever poor woman that gets saddled with him.

The problem with the retainer and royal romantic supports is that they're basically all the exact same, none of them really have anything particularly interesting to them.

"Are you sure? How could you be with me, a lowly retainer?"
-"I've loved you for a long time, but it didn't seem appropriate."
-Basically all of them.

While I know Saizo and Beruka's C support was shit on for being a meme where they literally don't talk, their S support is one of my favorites.

The younger generation I don't remember as well, but I liked Siegbert and Caeldori's dynamic. Rhajhat and Percy was pretty funny to me, just from the extreme contrast between the two. I liked Owain and Severa's in Awakening, and kept them together in Fates, though both seem rather uninterested in the fact that Owain randomly became a wizard at some point, but whatever.

While I know Saizo and Beruka's C support was shit on for being a meme where they literally don't talk
It gets shit on but it’s one of my favorite supports. If you put that support in a GBA game between like Jaffar and Renalc, everyone would love it. Hell Dorcas and Vaida don’t talk either.

It’s a Revelations exclusive support “conversation” between two peoples who’s gimmick is silent assassin, looking at each other and saying nothing, and getting mutual respect. The odds you ever see it at all as astronomically low, on your minimum of third playthrough no less. If you saw that line of text it’s because you really wanted to see specifically what the two “don’t talk” people talk about and went far out of your way for that joke. And the result is “…..”. That’s hilarious and nobody will convince me otherwise.

It’s like when Caeldori friend-zones Male Kana. That’s exactly what I want out of my hard-to-get, story inconsequential supports. I don’t need lore drops from every support, have fun! There’s hundreds of them in this game, thousands in this series I’m sure, I love the “wait…. What?” Ones.

Just beat PoR and RD for the first time. Still have zero clue where the idea of gay Ike comes from.
Its because if you beat it with him and Soren or Ranulf having an A support rank, they have an ending that says they left Tellius together, and Ike has no romantic supports with women. Its basically just people choosing to read into that journey something romantic.

I'll be honest, I hated Soren so much that I just never bothered to field him, so I never had him and Ike supporting. I will say, canonically, Soren flirted more with Aimee, the shop owner than he ever did with Ike, even though it was just a ploy to get a discount.

"You're a diamond, and other beorc only glass beads, Miss Aimee... Stay beautiful."
-Soren

Personally, I wish Ike and Lethe had an ending, they seemed like a good match.

Ike: Then life in Gallia may not be so bad.
Lethe: Oh? Well, good. It's settled then. Come see us whenever you're ready. I might even...look forward to it.
Ike: You have my word.

Tellius seems to attract the progressive folks due to it's anti-racism plot with the Laguz.

Ike has no real chemistry with or notable romantic supports conversations with women. He does have two paired endings with Soren and Ranulf that you need to unlock via an A support in both Radiant Dawn and the PoR savefile transfer.

It sort of follows I suppose, every other lord before Ike either had a canon partner like Marth/Shiida, Alm/Celica and Sigurd/Diadora or at least many options, all GBA Lords have multiple paired ending options, Celice can marry any girl except his sister.

Ike does stick out in this regard.

Ike also curbs the shit out of the merchant lady. Basically nobody has paired marriage endings in Tellius other than Mist!Boyd. That’s pretty uncommon especially for main lords who generally have a heavily implied love interest. He is the only main lord without either a cannon pair or the ability to use a marriage system, other than maybe Lief I haven’t played Theracia. I don’t think that makes him gay, the story is just focused on other things. Some people looking for “representation” will find it I guess.

Basically “he’s not NOT gay when every other lord is explicitly NOT gay therefore GAY”

My friend and have a joke that Ike just doesn’t know what sex is. He asked Sorrin what it is once, but he just said it wouldn’t help the mercenary company so he lost interest.

The modern internet absolutely refuses to tolerate the idea of deeper bonds that aren't romantic.
Ike may not flirt with women but he never does it with other man either. If we have to make this about sexualities, I think it'd be actually pretty reasonable to assume Ike is asexual but lefties never care about that specifically, it always has to be gay or trans.
And then Priam in Awakening happened anyway lmao

PoR has no paired endings but RD has a couple. Off the top of my head there is:
-Jill/Haar
-Elincia/Geoffrey
-Naesala/Leanne
-Lucia/Bastian
-And the ever iconic Astrid/Makalov

l2ezjhaxxbqa.webp

-Astrid/Makalov

Don't remind me.
I love Makalov but I really wish they didn't character assassinate Astrid so hard.

Honestly the real problem with Radiant Dawn's ending is that they say Ike left on a journey and just never came back or ever saw his friends ever again except Soren/Ranulf.

Which seems... incredibly out of character.
