So anyways. Not Fire Emblem but I am interested in Unicorn Overlord.

I think that a lot of localization haters are glorified weaboos who refuse to accept that pure translations are disjointed and nonsensical, but that doesn't mean it it's good when localisers change scenes and dialogue simply because they don't like references to boobs and romance. It looks like something that might be short lived, but it's certainly better than half of the first-party stuff that's already been announced. But it looks incredibly easy, though

I think that it might just be an byproduct of outsourcing it to certain companies, tbh. But even then, there's no shortage of games that have been watered down directly by the devs because they were out of touch with the international market

I've noticed it too and it's rubbed me the wrong way. I was as skeptical as anyone pre-release but after having a year to let it ruminate Engage is (IMO) the best FE to come out in like the last 15 years lol. I've been playing Maddening again recently too and it's probably the most fun I've ever had playing Fire Emblem; everything about the game is so tight and polished. I know the writing/characters aren't everyone's cup of tea but I was never turned off by it, even as someone who really likes serious shit like the Jugdral games.
Something I've always really loved about the series as a whole is how diverse the entries are when it comes to all sorts of different factors: if you're in the mood for really sound mechanics, try out Engage or Conquest. Want to bond with a good cast? Play Three Houses. If you really value things like voice acting and art direction then check out Echoes. If you want maps that are the best of the best, play the GBA games; FE4/5 and FE9/10 offer really good writing/worldbuilding in particular, etc., etc... I guess it could be argued that, ideally, every game should nail all of those things, but I think each game having its own various strengths has allowed me to appreciate the series as a whole more, if that makes sense.
That's part of what makes the seemingly endless dogpiling of Engage kind of fascinating to me - like, sure, the tone is goofy and that's not what everyone is looking for, and sometimes that is enough to ruin the game for someone, even. But I've had people unironically try to argue with me that the maps in Engage are worse than the maps in Three Houses, or that Engage isn't as smooth. Like, seriously? I get preferring one over the other but it feels like people's hatred for Engage is coming from an alternate reality in that regard.
Again, though; just my opinion, not disparaging anyone who prefers 3H or anything like that. I'm sure if everyone here or anywhere else were to share their personal rankings of the FE series they'd all be unique, and that's legitimately wonderful and a sign of a very special series in my eyes.

It's really nice and refreshing to see someone appreciate the uniqueness of the entries when its so much more common for people to make these unbelievably stale jokes about self loathing with the series that you see pretty much everywhere else.

Problem is that these localizers are there via nepotism and also hate the works they are part of.
They are given many chances to be better but refuse to be better. So the Nuclear Option it is.

I don't think Engage ever had a worthwhile script in the first place, but it was made even worse by Nintendo Treehouse trannies who got their panties in a twist over any hint of romance or sexual attraction, as well as outright just changing personalities of some characters. It was the same deal with Fates, an already poor script that then got butchered by Treehouse even further. A good translation should preserve the original intent of the script and the author without putting in random bullshit that doesn't need to be there.
It's not even like we haven't gotten good FE translations before. FE9 has a pretty good translation with even some alterations to the script that make it even better, such as the context behind Ike's last fight with the Burger King being changed. At this point they're not fixing logical inconsistencies or random shit that doesn't make sense, they're just imposing their own personal feelings onto a script that was made by an entirely different culture. Who benefits from this shit aside from the overpaid idiots at Treehouse and any other retard like them who wants things they don't like to be censored? Why would you want things to censored and altered just so "some" people don't get offended?

It's so psychotic and prevalent that even the fire emblem subreddit had to say something about it because, shocker, when people want to talk about the New Game but keep getting instantly shouted down by butthurt faggots, those people aren't going to come back to try to talk about anything, let alone the New Game. Reddit is just one example of several, pretty much everywhere you could go to talk about Fire Emblem is dying. For a long time now if you look up engage videos on youtube, sort by new, and click on one that's generally positive and scroll down, you'll see the exact same NOOOOO IT'S BAD FIRE EMBLEM HAS FALLEN """"discourse"""" that's been smeared on the walls everywhere else for a year, and often by the exact same people, like locusts.
It's weird to me how Engage and Fates consistently get singled out for egregious localization while Awakening or 3H are never included under that umbrella, let alone anything prior, and I don't believe that they're overlooked in good faith. I didn't believe it when 3H was the new hotness and I especially don't believe it now. Hey, at least they don't remove difficulty modes from the games anymore or reduce effective weapon damage from 3x to 2x. Hope you didn't want American Lyn to actually do damage with that Mani Katti.
You don't even need more than the most basic understanding of Japanese to see how much these scripts are tampered with if you're reading along with Japanese audio. It's hard to even find examples of the localizations for anything that isn't Fates or Engage now, and who knows how long they'll be available for because they're all on shit like tumblr, wordpress, and 4chan archives where the images are too old to load, and journalists and youtubers don't care about drawing attention to them. Like, I'm fucking sorry, Gregor being turned Russian, Lon'qu being turned into an incel, Henry's character being rewritten into wacky comic relief, and Frederick saying "My body is ready" get a pass? 3H removing gendered language and interactions, changing Sylvain from hitting on a tranny to a scarecrow, ruining the tone of originally emotional scenes with stupid quips, rewriting the church and Edelgard to make her more sympathetic, and literally changing "Fire Emblem" to "Crest of Flames" gets a pass? Engage is where the line gets drawn? Complete disingenuous hypocritical nonsense. If you want to doomerpost about how cucked kaga's grimdark kino is going to be despite 3H not shying away from grimdark at all, maybe point fingers at SoV for brownwashing Atlas and Deen instead of the game where they had to localize out the dialogue that the dark-skinned characters can't swim.
Fates isn't where this aggressive 21st Centurification shit started and it didn't ease up during the 3H era just because youtubers weren't using localization as a cudgel for their gay ass hate campaigns against the writers of Paper Mario and Warioware for making their children's anime chess games Too Japanese. As much as I'd love to blame wokeness or trannies in treehouse or whatever the fuck, both the newer and older games censor LGB stuff, which goes back at least as far as the Tellius games with Heather, Kyza, and Devdan, and debatably Legault, Florina, and Raven/Lucius in 7. I've assembled a small collection of examples and resources.

My entire thing with localization - I don’t mind changes made to clean up a script (ironing out details, things that got lost in translation, etc.). My problem starts when there’s wholesale changes made from the original - while there’s some exceptions that’ve actually improved upon the source (see the glorious shitpost of an anime that is the Ghost Stories Dub), the majority of the time it just winds up being shit.
And with how upfront most localizers are about hating what they work on, I’m just waiting for the day localization becomes “some guy runs the script through Google Translate/ChatGPT, then fixes typos”, because it’ll be funny to watch these people screech.

Ah, I know these Amielleon and Nanigma chicks. They were among these insufferable "Big Name Fans" that swear their own biased translations are Oh So Much Better Than The Official Ones, only that they allow their own biases bleed all over their "work" and are not much better than the NOA people they yell against.
I wouldn't exactly take these people's work as Word Of God, to be honest. Plus they were rather wanky in fandom itself: iirc Amielleon was one of THESE Ike/Soren fans who SCREAMED HYSTERICALLY when Priam's lineage was revealed and her precious Ike/Soren took a hit for it, and I remember Nanigma throwing a gigantic tantrum (that she later deleted, ofc) when told that Leo was not the Worst Father Ever and worked hard to understand Forrest after their fight in Forrest's paralogue.

I will say that I don't actually know how the localization has affected most games in the series and unless it seeps into the gameplay I'm content with it. And of course thats where the completele lack of several DLC paralogues in Fates became inexcusable which thankfully has not happened again since.
Besides, people can't really lambast the localization for pre-Awakening games when some of them still don't have an official one. At most there's Radiant Dawn where, from what I understand, there is apparently a second more nuanced script for the story that was supposed to be used in NG+ playthroughs (like Pelleas and Lehran) but went unused internationally? But they also changed the motivation for the Black Knight during his duel with Ike which everyone sees as an improvement.
Edit: Forgot to specify but outside of the lost DLC I don't really care about how Fates and Engage have been localized because there wasn't much to ruin to begin with. More faithful translations would have been better, yes. But ultimately Engage and Conquest are games that I like for their gameplay.

I'll say this much, you spend roughly half to 60% of the game's run tine reading dialogue boxes, depending on how much you care about support conversations. If that ENTIRE segment of the game is shit, then even if the rest of the game is godlike, it still averages out to a failing grade.
