The character designs are both gaudy and lazy as fuck. All of the men’s shoulders jut out at weird 90-degree angles, etc. My personal favorite is how your grizzled, gray-bearded, 60+-year-old retainer has the exact same Chris Hemsworth-esque body as characters 40 years younger than him.

Holy fuck. I am embarrassed about this series. Give me remakes of the Ike games ffs.

This is a 35 year old woman btw.
In anime years, yes.

We were talking about localization fuckery a handful of days ago and I just stumbled into this little nugget for anyone that cares. This dates back to 2005 with Path of Radiance.

tl;dr: Mist comments about the Black Knight taking her brother away which implies Ike is being obsessively driven by revenge and losing himself in his pursuit of the his father's murderer. This is actually comes from pretty much nowhere in the original script.

It also has some more subtle changes where Mist just kind of tard charges at BK in the EN script out of agitation, but in JP she hesitates a little bit more and recognizes the futility in attempting to fight. How much this matters I suppose depends on you, also the script has a G Gundam reference. BK is also a decent bit more of an asshole in the EN script.

At the same time the Radiant Dawn JP script that twists this duel's conclusion from PoR is some literal bullshit that is actually dumb as dirt, while the EN one while still kind of dumb it makes more sense then JP's "I was actually a doombot the whole time!" tier writing.

Like I don't even care that Ike is the sole confirmed protagonist that's a faggot. But I'd rather have another game of his. Have him frolicking with Soren I don't fucking mind because anything....
ANYTHING
would be better than the trite shit you get in Engage.

Like even floptaku gave it a bad review which is saying something.

Genealogy of the Holy War. Easy. You'll have to get a snes emulator up and running and track down an english patch. Naga's the best patch out right now.

Three Houses: This is the easiest of the bunch to play, it checks off those boxes writing wise and is a pretty easy game to play outside of Maddening mode so it is solid for a new player. Very big and overdramatic conflict across three different characters. It has a lot of fluff or social sim type elements if you're into that or hate it. It heavily encourages you to at least play all four of the routes to fully understand what's going on you're playing due to how the routes are written. So this is easily an over 100 hour game to trudge through.

I also know Genealogy of the Holy War and Tharcia 776 are good for their big stories, but those games are pretty autistic to understand gameplay wise for better and for worse and you need to deal with translation patches. Not very new player friendly at all and you might want to look into the game's mechanics so you understand what's going on. Their is also a confirmed leaker saying a Genealogy remake is in the works which will obviously make it easier to play, so keep that in mind.
Holy war sounds like a good start then, will keep an eye out for a used copy of 3 cucksheds. These two will doubtlessly be radically different experiences, but so long as I can tell soldiers to stab people and bask in the melodrama then that's all that matters.
Celica's route in Shadows of Valentia fairly melodramatic. I would say Conquest, but I keep getting 2edgy4you vibes from the plot.
Can't emulate 3DS games but thanks anyways.

Floptaku also thinks every Xenoblade except 1 is bad, and personally I think Engage is one of the better games to play. Just riff on the story like its Conquest.

Ike is gay?
Sort of? Maybe? In Radiant Dawn he has special endings with Soren and Ranulf where they leave the continent of Tellius together to go see the wider world. Otherwise Ike leaves by himself and is never seen again.

So people have presumed Ike is gay because he doesn't really have a notable female romantic interest in his games (Elincia kind of, but that goes nowhere after PoR ends) and his special ending is with dudes only. He's also a big bara guy in RD and Soren and Ranulf are his twinks which just enhances the shipping. He also is implied to hug Soren in his special info conversation if you unlock his memory scene.

Ike is gay?
That's a whole 'gay' thing in and of itself.

Reasons Ike isn't Gay:
  • He doesn't really show romantic interest in...anyone in particular.
  • Priam exists, and had to come from somewhere.
Reasons Ike is Gay:
  • He only has special endings with men
  • Priam is only stated to be descended from Ike, which could just as easily mean he's from Mist's lineage and not Ike's directly.
My two cents is that Ike is a fucking Shonen Jump meathead who isn't interested in anything that doesn't involve battle.

I've played a number of Fire Emblem games, but I'm definitely not an expert. I've played every game that came stateside, save for Ike's games. I'll get around to those one day.

I'm pretty ass at FE games; I just stick with units I like unless they are genuinely shit, and I bench characters I don't like unless I feel like farming for their supports. I'm one of those retards that plays with perma-death on but resets every time a character dies, making me question why I don't just play the mode where the characters retreat instead of dying and are back for a new map.

I was cautious about starting Engage, because I wasn't liking the character designs, but I like it more than I was expecting. It's a big step down from Three Houses, but the gameplay is genuinely fun. I personally preferred the monastery to the Somniel, but neither are groundbreaking things that make or break either game.

The characters though, they fall between Awakening and Fates characters in that most are unremarkable while others are just one-note nonsense, so it makes it hard to be invested in them. Three Houses isn't Pulitzer winning writing or anything, but I liked a majority of the characters to the point that there weren't any playable characters I disliked (some could get annoying though, namely Bernadetta).

I rely a lot on Merrin, Panette, and Goldmary when I play. Yunaka was great when I first got her, but she's starting to fall back a little bit the closer I get to the end. Alcryst has a similar problem. I don't know what happened, but when he was unpromoted, he dodged nearly everything enemies would throw at him, but after promotion, it's hard to keep him alive.

The story is also incredibly corny, which is what I was expecting. I just finished Chapter 22, and saw the DBZ-style revival coming a mile away.

My main problems with Engage are:
1. Supports take way too long to raise. I know it was even more tedious in the GBA games, but the key difference is that Engage lets you fill out the entire support book, unlike the GBA games were you were only allowed 5 per character.

2. They should let you choose the 2 characters that fight in the Arena. While it is hilarious to see little Jean get walloped by someone 3 times his size, I still would like him to at least get better EXP growth by pitting him up against someone he at least has a chance against. Also, I find the Arena the best place to raise supports, so that would be an added bonus.

3. Cooking is bullshit. You should be able to do it more than once after a battle. It doesn't need to be like Three Houses where you could spend a whole day eating, but now I have loads of ingredients that aren't going to be used. Second, I hate the RNG of whether the meal will come out good or not, with the lowered stats as an added fuck you if it's bad enough. I notice that some characters seem to fuck up a meal no matter how skilled it says they are at cooking it.

Rule of thumb in Japanese media is that the actual gay characters are unquestionable homos who talk like the other gender and constantly sexually harass their own gender. Anything else is just headcanon.

Anyways the verdict of Engage seems to be that everything about the plot and characters is forgettable/cringe but the gameplay itself is more arcade like than previous games, which allows for more fun playing with playing around the system rather than the usual static gameplay.

Its weird how C and B supports happen relatively quickly but A supports take forever.
I ended up giving Micaiah's ring to units whose supports I wanted to unlock and just spammed healing

This is exactly what Heather is, it doesn't help that she's a total cunt to Brom when he's the one recruiting her instead of Nephenee*sigh*

You can change the cook for a better cook by going to rest in "My Room".

C supports are generally easy to trigger through an arena match or dinner setup, but it sure took me a long time to trigger A-tier supports (so far I've only unlocked between Louis/Celine, Yukana/Etie and femMC/Ivy).

also Jean supports look hilarious, by being paired with several older women

I need him, alongside of some other early-game characters, to stop warming the bench but skirmishes & training battles scaling up to my overall force isn't helping things.
My main team is composed of Ryuuru (female MC), Louis, Yunaka, Etie, Diamand, Celine, Ivy, Goldmary and Ortenshia. I bring either Chloe, Anna, Merin or Kagetsu as situational picks depending of the enemy forces.

This happened only once for me, and with Ortenshia no less, so I believed it was just in-character with her bratty attitude.
Interactions between characters during dinner also seem rare

I will give the game some credit in that Alear reacts to most characters by telling them to tone down their weirdness and worship of them in supports. I don't think Corrin did that. It's funny how much whiplash will occur if you give a character something they don't like. I misclicked and gave Ivy a gift she didn't want, and her tone changed from, "I'll follow you no matter what," to "What the hell, I don't want that shit!"

It's also refreshing that there's little to no romance (not that that will stop the fanbase, of course.) Most supports seem platonic, save for a few characters like Goldmary and Fogado flirting with a few characters.

While I can't comment on FE Fates (due of never playing it), Ryuuru does indeed tell some of her party members to knock down a peg (on B-tier support dialogues) when they go too far on treating her differently due of her status as a God Dragon. Either with Fran fan-girling like a degenerate or Merin being her curious hunter self (and treating MC like a rare creature specimen).

Fran: "Ah! Shinryuu-sama (God Dragon) is drinking water! How lovely!"
Fran: "Wa~~ah! I want to be that water!"
Ryuuru: "..."
Ryuuru: "Erm, Fran, could we talk a bit? This is little serious."

Ryuuru: "Please stop treating me differently."
Ryuuru: "It's true I'm a God Dragon. My lifespan and strength ability are different from Merin and others."
Ryuuru: "But my feelings are the same as a human being. I hate being given these odd looks."

Romance & girl-talks are actually present in the game, but only if you play in moonrunes.
I don't want to engage (no pun intended) myself too much in this topic for the sake of this thread, but lot of these support dialogues in english are straight-up fanfictions from localizers. It's not a problem for me as one can see plainly, but it's still a bit annoying to see the amount of disparity to the point it changes the perception of a game between languages. Regardless it's a fiction work mainly aimed for japanese teens with its own regular tropes anyway.

Is Engage the only FE game where the protagonist can’t clear the entire map singlehandedly with a six pack of elixirs and a magic backpack (convoy) to replace any weapons they break by the end of the game?

Shout out to Ephraim. He really did get gud. He doesn’t need to be a pansy ass dragon hybrid like Toothpaste chan, byleth or corrin.

Toothpaste chan is a much more entertaining name than whatever “Alear”is. Really does sound like a brand of toothpaste.

Lords aren't really that strong generally speaking, they are rarely in the top crust of units in their respective games.

Roy and Marth come to mind, they're pretty awful especially without their special weapons. FE9 Ike is also kind of weak until he promotes and especially until he gets Ragnell, Micaiah from FE10 sucks as a combat unit because she gets one rounded by pretty much anyone with a physical weapon. Eliwood and Lyn are also kind of shit and their game has some really weak enemies too. Celica can't really solo either because she's too frail and not a dread fighter.

Ephraim is one of the better Lords as a unit, but he is also in one of the easiest FEs in the series and is one of the few with non-promoted 1-2 range and not terrible bulk. This is also the game where Seth is not only your early prepromote for the game, but the best unit in the game only marginally losing to a trained Franz or Vanessa in performance because his growths and bases are just that good. Very Seth.

Alear's real advantage is due to their unique dragon typing they can abuse every Emblem much better, Alear Byleth is actually broken for example because you dance 4 units and give +3 stats across the board. That is frankly more impactful then Ephriam just being a good foot locked spear man until he promotes. The fact Alear can promote like everyone else gives them a significant advantage over most lords in the series, because lord promotions are usually so late that they tend to fall behind and contribute less around the midgame when everyone begins to promote.

See this example on hard mode to see what I mean regarding Alear Byleth.

Dimitri and Byleth are outliers in terms of damage output, but an solo Maddening run is nearly impossible for an separate reason. Corrin is somewhat mediocre without resorting to some very autistic research. Robin and Chrom are good, but they won't have an significant advantage without an lot of grinding. Alm kind of struggles against magic and armored units. Celica might stand an chance with the Blessed Sword, but it'll be far more likely that you'll have an better run with Alm. I haven't played through Path of Radiance, but it feels that Ike outclasses everything up until you're running some shady errands for that one country.

With Engage, Alear is mainly an utility that can kind of hold his own. But you'd be better off keeping him within his unique promotion in order to make the most out of the rings

Echoing what most people have said, Lords usually aren't great units or even the best in their game. Kaga era lords usually were pretty good units, though, owing a lot to the fact the weapon triangle system hadn't been implemented until Genealogy. So, Alm and Marth didn't care about lances and swords were generally the best weapon type (even *in* Genealogy swords are still the best because every other weapon type is often prohibitively heavy.) Whereas in games like Binding Blade or PoR, the fact that at least half the possible units you can encounter on the battlefield can use lances (Peg. Knights, Armor Knights, Cavaliers, Wyvern Knights, Soldiers, Halberdiers, Paladins, etc.) puts swordies at a disadvantage for most of the game, and if they never get a secondary weapon, they'll struggle pretty much the entire game.

Sigurd is kind of the major exception to lords being mediocre, because he can genuinely solo the entirety of Gen 1 with just a silver sword, light brand, and a brave sword. Leif suffers from pretty bad bases and a rough early game, but if you know how to abuse Scrolls, and once you realize Thracia locks your stat cap at twenty, you realize he's not really that bad and can easily grow into his own over the course of the game. His promotion bonuses suck ass, though.

I would say most of the lords are kinda mediocre in the GBA games, and it's not really until the 3DS era where they started making the Lord stand out with unique benefits besides a strong personal weapon. Robin and Corrin are able to reclass into anything you want and offer support no other unit can with skills like Draconic Aura or Rally Spectrum. Alear kind of falls into the latter by being able to abuse every and any emblem you want. Corrin is pretty good on them because it gives them access to every Dragon Vein ability, so now Alear can spawn vines that makes your units unbreakable, or pillars of fire to damage enemies. Whatever is most useful in that moment.
