Were those soldiers unwitting victims though? The script makes it sound like they willingly used the stones (behind Dimitri's back admittedly) out of a desperate effort to hold back the Imperial Army that had already conquered everything else in their path.

Nowadays, pure Permadeath players are a minority of FE players, but the feature is so iconic that IS can't really just axe it so they've spent the past three titles experimenting with different ways to work around its limitations because they're trying to emphasize side-characters more. I'd wager most oldheads still use permadeath 4/5 times, but I think a lot of the newcomers don't shift off of it.

Dedue is unironically worse for the story in Azure Moon if he stays alive post-time skip. Second time around I didn't do his paralogue because of that.
It doesn't matter how they act, they are there because of wokeness, they are esthetically unpleasing. Can you guys stop making excuses for this shit.
