"Reminiscence" (Ninian's theme) is "The Best Is Yet to Come" of Blazing Blade. It's haunting the first, maybe, two times you hear it but just gets funny after that. As trumpets are to Hoenn, the glockenspiel is to Ninian.

I only ever played up through Fates, but in my mind, songs like The Devoted or Unstoppable Destiny will forever be the music that I associate with Fire Emblem. That and Attack from Sacred Stones is literally burned into my brain from playing it all the time when it first came out and being introduced to the franchise.

Aside from the character design, but that's an different shitshow
As I said, I haven't played newer games, but the newer character designs look so garish to me. I long for the days where you could have people who looked old enough to shave in your army and they didn't all look like they were trying to dress up as a wacky anime character.

I mean, I know they are wacky anime characters, but could we at least pretend that we're going off to war?

There is no combination of words that anyone can write that could make me interested in Peri as a character
I remember in an Excelblem video, he introduced and read Peri's background, than paused, and goes, "What? Who the fuck wrote this character?" which neatly mirrored my thoughts when I first saw her.

I need to talk about how much I hate Fodlan Winds. It's an extremely repetitive tune and having the obnoxious, distracting beat drop into the equally repetitive leitmotif drilled into my skull every single minute of half the maps in the game makes me want to actually fucking puke. Everyone seems to love it, but I was sick of it before even finishing the first map it plays.
I actually kind of dislike Fates' OST for a similar reason, it has more variety than 3H, but i feel like it abuses the Lost In Thoughts leitmotif waaaaaay more than 3H ever abused Edge of Dawn, but i can agree that they should have cut Fodlan winds way earlier than they did.

I need to share your pain because I also hate Fodlan Winds. Well... I wouldn't say it's a bad song by itself, but the music DOES NOT fit on what's happening on screen. I legit thought my game was broken when the "sickest electronic drop with very epic music" played on the prologue chapter. We're in the middle of the night being invaded by a large group of ruthless bandits, did any of them decided to drop their aux and play this?

It's also extremely overused like you said, but that first impression is what got me. Fortunately, I think I remember liking the other battle themes more, even though I also find them kinda weak tbh.

You're right. My cope for this is that Fates tries harder to be more creative with how it's crammed into every song in the game, but if you just simply don't like Lost In Thoughts, then oh my god. I'm sure I don't even need to link it, but just for posterity:

Engage is also corny as shit with it's leitmotif usage on top of favoring corny as shit Fisher Price sounding electric guitars. It's getting to be an ugly trend for the series.

Fates really loves to rely on that song, it gets repetitive and tired so quickly. The song that Azure sings at the opera in Conquest was a breath of fresh air, because it wasn't "YOU ARE THE OCEAN'S GREY WAAAAVES~..." for the 80th time.

Engage was cheesy as fuck, but I get the feeling that, as awful as the writing is, it wasn't trying to take itself too seriously? Unlike Fates? I kinda got the vibe that it knows its clichés and embraces it a bit more.

The battle themes of the older games are especially memorable even if they're simple, kindov like Mario games.
It's spectacular. I want remakes typically for quality of life improvements, but given the overall quality of the 3DS OSTs, I have great anticipation for future remakes just for the prospect of getting a superior sound. I will lose my shit hearing the prologue theme of FE4 transition perfectly into the main theme. Especially with the more harrowing subject matter of the story, great potential.

Well, the character design in the older games kind of sucks for the secondary cast in the "wearing an breastplate over an t-shirt" sense. But at least those weren't as outlandish as taking to the battlefield in just your semi-fancy outfit with an random piece of armor over it

I read this post and checked out some of the chars. Chulainn got hit pretty hard with the first part:

It's like a medieval Varia Suit :story:

ZIGLUDO-CHAN and Ares looks classy as fuck though:

So I've been going through the 3DS games, and I have to say I'm having more fun with Fates than I ever did with Awakening. I never understood why people give Fates's story so much flak compared to Awakening's considering that both of them are just not good in general, and they both take themselves too seriously (half of what happens in Awakening is only because Emmeryn is too incompetent to function in general) . I do have to go through Conquest and Revelations still though, which I heard is where the main problems are, but Birthright is just really straightforward and inoffensively boring in general.

That aside, I really like how Fates gives you plenty of tools to play with compared to Awakening's Robin UNGA BUNGA. The difficulty also feels right, while Awakening's was all over the place, I mean in that game Hard is just too easy and Lunatic/Lunatic+ requiere you to ignore all of your units in favor of Robin (the exception probably being the Apotheosis DLC, which I'm not interested in doing after going through Lunatic+), the final boss showcasing everything that's wrong with that game.

Surprised that whenever Fates gets mentioned, people only talk about how bad the story is or how amazing the gameplay is (at least in my experience),
Probably because the track they put most in-your-face is a bit of very out of place JPOP and Fates was followed up by Echoes, which many people also say has the best FE OST, and then by 3H, which also has some good tracks when they aren't giving preference to a Fodlan Winds/Edge of Dawn derivative.

I think the quality of the writing worked to the detriment of the OST. Music can exist in a vacuum and good music can cushion bad writing, but when it's paired with an interactive medium where the atmosphere it's trying to convey is actively at odds with writing then it probably won't land for most people. Fates, fundamentally, is a goofy game about incest and groceries that was trying to sell itself on being a serious sword and sorcery political drama.

Listening to some of the tracks again (thanks for reminding me about A Dark Fall @mrs thickness) I'd gladly say in a vacuum that they're better than a lot of the tracks in, say, Awakening. The problem is I can't put a single track to a story moment in Fates that isn't JPOP, while I can instantly put Don't Speak Her Name to Renewal or ID Purpose to Endgame despite both being less interesting from a purely musical standpoint.

Unstoppable Destiny is FE's Imperial March. Probably the most instantly recognizable opening chords of any FE soundtrack outside of the FE proper leitmotif.

Yes, Conquest and Revelation are generally where the story and writing really shits the bed - The main problem was how the games were marketed, how the player, through Corrin, would have to make difficult, morally grey decisions - except the problem is that Hoshido is 100% good, and Garon from Nohr is 100% evil, and Conquest's plot just has Corrin become a whimpering, little bitch with no backbone.

The problems begin even before the route decision happens: the map where Sakura and Hinoka are ambushed by zombies, and Hinoka has to slow down to help Sakura, who hurt her ankle. Yeah, it's not like someone you know has a FUCKING FLYING MOUNT nearby, that would be really convenient.

The Outer Realms that Lilith can just transport everyone to at a whim makes zero sense either; it's a pocket dimension that the party can essentially access and hide inside anytime, and it's only brought up... once in the main story, and never again. Either make it unrelated to the story, or incorporate it into the story completely, I don't care which, just fucking pick one and stick with it.

Birthright Chapter 15 spoilers:
Kaze's death is one of the fucking funniest things I've seen. If you complete Chapter 15 without an A-Rank support between Corrin and Kaze, then Kaze falls down a ravine and presumably dies, Hinoka swoops in to save Corrin, and they fly away while Corrin cries out for his friend.
However, if you *do* achieve an A-Rank support, then the scene plays out similarly, only that Kaze notices a crystal at the side of the ravine, he throws a shuriken at it, which causes it to explode, and the ensuing explosion blasts them both out of the ravine and to safety. And then Corrin goes, "How did you know it would do that??" and Kaze just responds with, "I didn't, I just felt like doing it." Fucking lol.
Guess what, this is never brought up again.

I don't think I'll ever be able to let go of how dumbfounded I was by Fates' story but something thats so stupid that it cracks me up is how out of nowhere Lilith sacrifices herself to save Corrin in BR and CQ while she only survives in Rev because the writers forgot about her entirely past the prologue lmao.

Honestly I felt like the GBA games hit the right spot for the most part with character designs. They all felt more or less grounded in a way that Engage really doesn't.

Hey, at least she had an extra scene early on in CQ. But as far as her dying, it's kind of weird because you have Ryoma and Xander for dealing with that shit.

And speaking of conveniently bad writing. Fates probably takes the cake for shoving an legendary sword into your hands with little fanfare

For those autistic enough to get into Fire Emblem ROM hacks, the newly released Rebellion Saga by Mangs and Co. is really good. Definitely scratches the itch of no new game, and does things you'd never think possible on a GBA emulator.

I've been meaning to try out his romhacks. Is it connected to Andaron in anyway? I haven't played that either and dunno the quality of any of em.
