With out spoiling anything, can anyone give me any kind of indication if the story justifies Edelgard as the best girl that did nothing wrong?

This is a significant factor for how much I will pay for it.
Her shit with Rhea still feels really unjustified imo but she is no longer a dumb fuck for working with TWSITD for a long period of time which is an improvement

IMO fuck Rhea and the church, she was right to free Fodlan of them, and her path is best path cause the IBCM underground faction comes out of fucking nowhere and is the worst part of Claude's path(haven't played Blue Lions) but their remaining in influence still bugs me.

Personally I feel Rhea really doesn't deserve hate, she did some fucked shit yes but outside of trying to resurrect her mother everything she did was for peace and stability in Fodlan so I can't really fault her. But the Slithers didn't really come out of no where and were built up during the White Clouds part of the game if you actually paid attention to the scenes with Edelgard's Flame Emperor persona, Thomas/Solon and Kronya, it really is a result of how poorly executed Crimson Flowers was as a last minute addition to the game that lead to them being barely a foot note mention in the ending.

Funniest part about the Slithers to me is how Dimitri defeats them without even realizing it in Azure Moon because he kills their leader while he is still in his skin suit.

Nope, he's one of the characters expanded into the loyalist circle for Edelgard, alongside Monica and strangely enough Caspar. Of course, the Faerghus Three also become Lion-exclusive, so I guess they took some of the most patriotic characters and made them route-exclusive for the sake of gameplay and to show how not having as much time at Garreg Mach makes them default to country rather than personal grievances.
Caspar is a loyalist? What the fuck, in their support in Three Houses he basically tells Edelgard upfront that her problem is that she is unable to conceive that things might not revolve around her. He always seemed like one of the Black Eagles least likely to support her with how little he cares about the crest system.

The slithers show up in White Clouds and kill your father, how did they come out of nowhere?

I am as confused as you are, as Caspar is that unique form of justice-minded individual who should be very easy to convince to not fight a war of aggression. However, I also realize that he's dense as fuck, so he might not be willing to defect in the middle of a war he was probably convinced was righteous. Still, I thought his Hilda Ending was really heartwarming back in the original.
Fun as always and in Azure Gleam you have get the last of them, Yuri, in chapter 10. In Scarlet Blaze I am in chapter 7 and have all of them besides Yuri so from the look of things he is the last one that will join in each route.
Weird, the strategy guides say Constance is the last Wolf and is recruited in Chapter 11. That said, I do intend to send Bernie and Yuri to kill Count Varley once I have that encounter, because those two definitely deserve to do it.
