I've been gone a good bit, playing Digimon Story Time Stranger. Got the platinum for it. Good game. 👍

I haven't really been keeping up with 14. I think someone told me that they were getting rid of glamor restrictions but I'm not sure how I feel about that. It's great that we have more to choose from to mix and match. On the other hand, that could break some things graphics wise if they don't mesh well and the loss of identifying job outfits just further homogenizes them appearance wise as well as gameplay wise. Before I would've been able to tell who a PCT was or a PLD just by looking at them. Now we'll probably see heavily armored people bouncing around like a NIN. Although admittedly, that would be kinda funny. I can see the meme potential here.

playing Digimon Story Time Stranger
It was refreshing to play a game that's simply just a fun RPG, after the consistent disappointment from SE and Nintendo's RPG franchises lately. At this point I'm more interested in more Digimon Story games than I am FFXIV's next expansion. Why should I bother to get excited about content for a game when clearly its own creators don't give a shit?

I'm still curious to see how things develop as we go toward the new expansion. I really want to see if they've taken the feedback to heart. The game isn't in the best place but while it's not perfect, it's still comparatively better than what's currently on market. Unless you want to go to WoW where they've monetized the housing.
Funny that it's like that...both housing systems in both games are trash but that's a whole other can of worms.
If you are interested in Digimon games, I can give tons of recommendations. The digimon games have always been consistently good and it's a series I've loved since I was a kid so I can definitely vouch for them.
Similar digimon rpg games you can try are digimon world 2, digimon world 3 cyber sleuth, cyber sleuth hacker's memory and any of the digimon world games for the DS such as digimon world dusk/dawn or just digimon world ds. They all follow the same sort of mechanics as TS if TS was your first digimon game. If you're looking for more cozy monster raising, digimon world, digimon world: next order or re: digitize are good.

Then there are outliers like digimon survive which is tile strategy with a somewhat horror story, there are card game stuff out too. There's loads of different stuff. The big difference between Digimon and Pokemon is that Digimon isn't afraid to experiment and branch out.

I'm not sure that'll happen too much aside from people leaning completely into the gimmick of being a Dark Knight wearing White Mage robes. It'll definitely open up some good options for glam pieces.

Also because I can't find the thread unless I open a direct link to it, and update: Finally cleared M8S and like the new deep dungeon. Had my eight clears within a couple weeks and am in gacha hell trying to get the leaf pile mount.

Also also: eat shit, Kate. I'm sure Senna's next and Wuk Lamat will be Wuk.... Dead!

There are several schools of thought when it comes to localization -- some folks insist on a stringent 'authentic' translation with no liberties taken . This can cause problems, because some phrases or terms don't translate very well from one language into another and you get nonsense. Or you have local cultural jokes/references that might not be understood by a Western audience.
The localization as it was pre-Endwalker was fine. Koji is obviously a fucking nerd and uses a lot of archaic language and usage in the English script and I think it flows really well. Japanese autist speech is very hard to translate well and keep engaging so a little bit of punching up is necessary. Plus, Koji's scripts tend to have a bit of a rhythm to them as if he were literally writing the spoken lines to be read aloud for a play which I think adds a ton of flavor to the voiced scenes in English.

I know a lot of us are weebs and sufficiently steeped in Japanese culture to pick up the nuances from a hard-literal translation, but this is a mass-market product and so there's gotta be some cooking to make it work for the normies.

All that being said - There was a definite shift in the latter parts of the Endwalker patch cycle and Dawntrail where the speech feels entirely too modern and Cartoon Network, and it's a big shift in tone that I don't like. It's a very by-the-numbers localization and I feel like they're phoning it in.

You can almost pinpoint the moment where Koji stepped off the gas and went to work on XVI instead.

Koji Fox was still credited as a localizer in ShB and base EW despite Kate moving up the ladder during ShB. It was the post EW patches where his role changes to “localization supervisor” and Kate fully took over so that could explain why. I don’t know how much involvement he had but a good amount of the localization of ShB and base EW definitely had his fingerprints all over them and it wasn’t until post EW where it feels like it went away.

My guess was that he was supervising her while doing XVI at the same time and it was enough to reign Kate in.

I do not see the doom and gloom about glamour restrictions being unlocked. People were already running around imitating other jobs, or dressed as a frog, so nothing new on that front. You still have to wield the same weapons and cast the same animations/VFX as before. People aren't going to play a WHM glamourred in heavy armor only to stand in the back and throw snowflakes, or glam as a machinist and run around with a gun while dressed in robes. You could already achieve this with the current glamour options but people don't do it. Very few people run around as their full default job armor sets, and opening up the restrictions just means that they are going to cherry pick some specific job armor set pieces. Similarly, WoW allows you to look like a cloth caster as a plate wearer if you really want to and vice versa, but most players do not do that. Paladin players can transmog death knight shoulderpads but most don't.

I came from ESO where you can slap medium, heavy and light armor of all the playable races and NPCs and other types of styles all together in a mish mash if you want. I'm actually just more surprised XIV didn't do this sooner, must've really been one of their true "in case of emergency smash glass" actions.

Koji is a voracious reader -- he's stated that he tries to read a book a week (I think) and was/is trying to share stuff he liked with the rest of the dev team. You can tell there's a level of literacy there, even if some of it is aping shit like Game of Thrones (eg, common GRRMisms like "needs must.")

I do think that one of the things Koji understands about writing scripts is that they not only have to be written well, they also have to sound well. Sounding works on two levels -- performance from the talent, but also the words as written. Good writers will speak dialogue out loud to see if it sounds awkward.

Yeah this is one of the things I'm talking about with Kate fucking the dog. She seems incapable of writing in different voices, and everyone sounds like a contemporary 20something, right down to vocal tics and vocabulary.

I view it the other way around: she was given more latitude after being eased into the role and working with Koji Fox. Once he was split between XIV and XVI, she started fucking the dog. It's typical for senior creatives in studios to only see the broad strokes, so Kate was likely showing the best of the best (cue: how the fuck did Sena get hired jokes here) and he was getting a distorted view of things.

Then Dawntrail launched and the jig was up.

As much as I like the removal of glam restrictions and Viera with hats my enjoyment gets soured once I think about how it's a blatant "oh shit we're losing player, give what they asked for for years and we ignored up until now, maybe it'll fix things." Better too-late than never I guess. On the bright side everyone I know is looking forward for the next patch so maybe the course corrections will at least stabilize the player numbers if nothing else.

Half the playerbase on my DC dresses casually so I found it easier to identify jobs based on either the weapons, or the running animations if the weapons are out. As for the meme potential, I think people will joke around with it for a while then mostly everyone who isn't running a gimmick character will come up with something that fits the role eventually. Every MNK and SAM player I know for example counts the days to put on that one chestwrap blacksmith top.

I forgot about that, thanks for reminding me.

There's lots of good fantasy gear to combat the modern slop menace and the only problem with it was that it was Doh/Dol locked.

Also holy shit NA keeps getting DDOSed lol. Every day I've logged on recently there's just another attack and mass DC.

It's a problem the NA servers have been dealing with for years and no matter what they do to fix or alleviate it, it always comes back. There are just some days where you have to accept that you just can not play at all which is a real pain because no one wants to pay a sub for a game they can't even play.

Maybe they might need another upgrade on servers or something, I dunno. I'm not a tech wizard. I just wish they'd do something because this shit has been getting on my serves for over a decade at this point.

I see lots of sentiment about how XIV is the only game that has problems with this but I don't play enough online games to know how true this is.

The problem seems to be compounded by SE going with service from one telecom company from Japan, NTT, though. Whenever the game is unplayable due to lag and massive packet loss its usually due to one of their nodes shitting the bed too.
