It wouldn't be so jarring if we hadn't spent the past 10 years dealing with a similar deal called FUCKING GARLEMALD. Also a strongman empire which is the only thing of even remotely comparable size to Tural, developed in roughly the same 100-year timespan we're told Gulool Ja Ja was doing his thing. Except Garlemald:The writing is just so insultingly saccharine because they didn't take this direction. You're telling me he united the equivalents of North and South America under his banner, and this instead of some "imperialism le bad" character, (who would have had nuance if previous writers were still in charge) all of this peace and happiness schlock is legitimate?
Instead we get his retarded lizard son as the face of "conquest le bad because he...doesn't care about his people?"
1. was an existing nation with a strong military tradition
2. used extreme violence, including superweapons like Dalamud and Black Rose, on top of good old divide and conquer tactics
3. had a few actually good ideas about governance (stamping out Primal summoning and instituting meritocracy)
4. was on the cusp of a technological revolution with Magitek
5. was being puppeted by immortal dimension-hopping wizards
Whats funny is even with the bullshit about tacos and friendship, Tural STILL comes across as unequal. The Rite of Succession to choose the next ruler takes place entirely on the southern continent and only requires approval from certain tribes while excluding all the distinct ethnic groups of Xak Tural, like the Hhetsarro, Shetona, Whalaqee etc.
Guess catboys are second-class citizens no matter where you go.
