The writing is just so insultingly saccharine because they didn't take this direction. You're telling me he united the equivalents of North and South America under his banner, and this instead of some "imperialism le bad" character, (who would have had nuance if previous writers were still in charge) all of this peace and happiness schlock is legitimate?

Instead we get his retarded lizard son as the face of "conquest le bad because he...doesn't care about his people?"
It wouldn't be so jarring if we hadn't spent the past 10 years dealing with a similar deal called FUCKING GARLEMALD. Also a strongman empire which is the only thing of even remotely comparable size to Tural, developed in roughly the same 100-year timespan we're told Gulool Ja Ja was doing his thing. Except Garlemald:

1. was an existing nation with a strong military tradition
2. used extreme violence, including superweapons like Dalamud and Black Rose, on top of good old divide and conquer tactics
3. had a few actually good ideas about governance (stamping out Primal summoning and instituting meritocracy)
4. was on the cusp of a technological revolution with Magitek
5. was being puppeted by immortal dimension-hopping wizards

Whats funny is even with the bullshit about tacos and friendship, Tural STILL comes across as unequal. The Rite of Succession to choose the next ruler takes place entirely on the southern continent and only requires approval from certain tribes while excluding all the distinct ethnic groups of Xak Tural, like the Hhetsarro, Shetona, Whalaqee etc.
Guess catboys are second-class citizens no matter where you go.

Even funnier is that the game is obviously not going to have any sort of reckoning with the fact that Tuliyollal is benefiting massively from the growing settlements and the ceruleum mining in Shaaloani, while offering the natives of Xak Tural not even token political representation in the question of who is going to rule them.

I don't even know how you'd make it any more of a textbook case of heckin' colonialism. But I guess because it's the brown people standins doing it, it's fine.

Considering rampant imperialism is ignored just because the hecking native browns did it, its easily the most realistic political/cultural bit in DT by pure complete accident

Not only were catboys used as chattel by the Allagans (complete with them being brought from Meracydia to Allag as slaves LMAO) they're in the New World as noble savages who use buffalo shit in their cooking, have the southern half of the continent coming up to mine ceruleum in their land, and don't get a say in the rite to pick their new Dear Leader. At this point I'm surprised they didn't include them as the Dalits/untouchables in Thavnair

I do wonder what the tribes of Tural felt when Galool Ja Ja approched them and asked them to stop working on or worrying about their own problems to entertain the Rite of Succession, which was more or less a Royal vanity project solely meant to be a series of field trips for his adoptive daughter.

Personally I'd be pretty pissed if I had to set up those stupid little events they did just for that.

Monster Hunter event is Rathalos 2.0, the rewards look like meh and boy I will feel sorry for those who have to do their mentor roulettes in the future.

was an existing nation with a strong military tradition
Giving it another once over and it's funny how basically Gulool Ja Ja literally solo'd Tuliyollal and became it's king, and the overwhelming majority of the time, it's army is basically a self defense force against Tural Vidraal. Have no idea what the fuck Zoraal Ja was going to do with basically no navy and no field army preparations.

I was initially quite critical of how everything was approached and especially how the unification was presented but after reading into incan history a bit, I have become a bit less critical of the background idea. While Incan history did include conquest, a large segment of incorporated groups were incorporated "willingly" (not overtly through force but the threat of force was obviously there), most of the tribes were brought together rather quickly and coexisted relatively peacefully within 80 years. As the society obviously was inspired by Incans in a way, I have softened on this part of Dawntrail. Obviously it was not as rose-tinted and more nuanced in reality but I can stand with simplifying this a little for the story.

However, having this as a background does not mean that everything needs to be boring, nonsensical and juvenile. And on top of that, it could have been presented much better

I actually figured I'd do something I haven't done since ARR: Work on my sightseeing log. Actually had fun puzzling out the hints and where to go and what emote to use. The time/weather shit was annoying tho and made me look it up back then. So I unlock the damn thing for DT
124324345543645.webp Fully ready to embark. The zones do look better and maybe I'll see some new sights but...

I guess the hint is the zone name...? Compare to ARR it is kinda sad to see how poor it has gotten.

At least the lore tidbits are still there once you find it. I feel actually giving hints wouldn't have been too hard at all, but I guess everyone was too busy working on the next Savage...

Really? I legit haven't looked at them in ages. Did they ever give a reason for that? Probably because no one bothered?

People probably bitched about how crazy specific ARR ones are; have to have exact time and weather and be at the right spot because it doesn't explicitly tell you. Funny thing is that HW's blue orbs you actually have to pray at a few of them, like statues and shrines. think SB and on you just have to do the lookout emote at all of them.

It's been quite a long time since I was here and never got to share my opinions.
  • XVI Collab: Was kind of disappointing how basic it was. It should have at least have Clive questioning these non-humans or trying to interact with the XIV world more. What I liked about the XV collab was that Noctis was at least trying to get to know you better.
  • End of EW: I don't remember what my initial reaction was but I was kind of excited to see another landmass in the setting. The Void arc ended up feeling like a misplaced expansion because there wasn't enough content to make it a full expac.
  • Wuk Lamat: So I'm not pro-tranny or anything but I thought I'd give the actor a chance because if I shit on them just for being trans, I would be a hypocrite because I believed in ability before identity....and they weren't a good actor.
  • Tural: What really takes me out of it was that it feels way too peaceful. Eorzea lore had centuries of conflict yet these guys got along pretty well after 80 years? I know Yoshida said he wanted to make XIV more uplifting because current events doompilled everyone but I would prefer the writers not to put on bubble wrap on everything.
  • Solution 9: Gotta be honest, I was expecting this kind of twist. It was either Allagans or ancient aliens.w
  • environments were pretty cool. love the jungle foliage and I like how exotic the glowing jungle is.
  • FF9 referencing: I kind of don't like how obvious it is. It felt like they took Alexandria from IX and glued robot parts to it.
  • Occult Crescent: I like the premise of exploring remnants of ancient civilizations that look displaced so I'm disappointed in how short it currently is. I feel like this is what DT should have been about, Indiana Jones style adventures.
Overall, I think they had the ingredients to make a decent expansion but the direction is all over the place.
I've probably mentioned it in this thread, but Square briefly venturing out of JP ONRY basically sunk the company the first and last time they attempted it (Squaresoft Hawaii, which was home to the movie Spirits Within...which basically necessitated the merger with Enix.)

I was rewatching the Heavensward cinematic and caught that Koji Fox wasn't just a localization guy, but also co-lead on lore and was credited as such in the cinematic.

A little worrisome if Kate is 100% Koji's replacement in terms of role/responsibilities.

Also, am I missing something with the latest spate of drama with her? Not really getting the outrage.
Other than the Charlie Kirk thing, Grummz blames her for writing Wuk Lamat and trying to make XIV "more woke". Of course, Grummz is a retarded grifter.

All the peace, tolerance, and singing kumbaya over tacos stuff was kinda bad, but what really takes the cake for me is the cowboy duels with rubber bullets.

Tural and Dawntrail as a whole has a problem with not having any serious problems or stakes at all (the Mamook eugenics cave excepted, which is solved in one cutscene's worth of yapping anyway) before the Alexandrians come in with the soul thermoses 2/3 through (and promptly diverts to yet more inane filler about farmers telling you that they farm), but the rubber bullets bit is the point where it really got to me. That goes beyond being just kinda cheesy and right into self-parody.

Having a big dramatic showdown at high noon and then having an aside reveal like "oh no he's fine, those were rubber bullets" in the next cutscene is the kind of shit I'd expect out of a 4Kids dub. Completely ridiculous.

Anyway I once again call for Square to publicly crucify Hiroi in front of their HQ as an apology for Dawntrail.

It's just so funny when you had
a) the entire disaster that setup ARR, and the petty crimes you witness in the aftermath
b) Haurchefant dying in Heavensward, followed by the implicit death of Papalymo
c) dissidents being executed in Stormblood and implied torture
d) literal chest-bursting shenanigans by sin-eaters in Shadowbringer, and the whole war vibe in Bozja (bonus points to the fey who's actually very much into torturing mortals if not for the WOL presence)
e) entire families raped to their soul by blasphemies in Endwalker

And what do you get in Dawntrail? "rubber bullets". Lol lmao. It's like they forgot what world Eorzea is in.

No no no, you see, the hecking Turali Americans-but-not-really-Americans are so enlightened and hecking chungus wholesome that they do not resort to lethal violence!

I am missing the more gritty but still somewhat campy banter and random NPC chats, stories and what have you of ARR. We got dark stuff from the beast tribes like tempering, we got slavers and racism in the job quests, we got some promiscuous jokes and banter, swearing and some tragic things like that one adventure group getting killed off that you meet in front of the early game dungeons.

I dunno, most things feel too clean nowadays, and the dark themes are often sometimes too high-fantasy to be relateable, or just so poorly written that I actively root for the people I should care about to die, like the whole fake Sphene being like "Nooooooooo, come on guys, I just need all your souls to power my fallen kingdom's pointless fake eternal life that isn't actually eternal life but just snapshots of memories packed into androids disguised as the dead! No, we may never have peace because I am quite literally programmed to want you all dead." and Wuk still goes "But why we no can be frens?" for the 5th time, that's when I really wished for the whole Dawntrail story to just end, nuke Alexandria and start from scratch.

I will be honest though, if I ignore all the pseudo Friendship Is Magic babble, Living Memory actually made me feel as hollow as the hollow illusion it turned out to be. Though the area was mostly carried by the soundtrack and level designers.
