Some folks were claiming that it was costing them $40K+ for this stunt, which seems high, but this also seems ridiculously low.

I'm also extremely skeptical that 'no cost was incurred' because they pulled the ads. You're basically costing the business an ad slot they could've used for someone else by doing that, which means lost revenue for the billboard company. Having worked at a place which ended up having to pull a billboard, we were on the hook for it.

That's about right. That's why they went with digital billboards, they also possibly had a sucking-someone-off promo rate. The 40K people are crowing about is a monthly (maybe yearly) rate where you monopolize a top billboard. These are autists in rotation on probably sub-prime billboards, so $40 a day is within a realistic range.

tl;dr It costs very little , the billboards were almost certainly rotating with several other ads on the day after 4th of July - a nothing weekday.

A lot of these providers will have refund/error clauses that let you pull your boards and bank you time. It didn't "cost" them anything, but they will likely be writing off the $160 unless they want to run another billboard.

So you're paying 15 cents, American, for the pleasure of cybering someone who looks like the Quartering.

It's funny because a lot of the ERP dancers make it seem like they make a ton of money doing it when it's really just gil, and not even that much of it. I was in a position where I was able to see these RP venue's earnings and it really isn't that much for the individual dancer. Let's say you are hired to do the 150k gil lapdance. The venue takes a cut of that, if depends on where you go but I would say it's usually a 60/40 split for the dancer. On top of that, the venue has to pay its other non-dancer employees (but they usually don't get paid very much, something small like 50k) I've never seen anyone go for the super ultra VIP packages like they were advertising which was 50M gil, but maybe they had a few takers for the 1M tier. One big earner is the bar. Usually they have people craft a bunch of stuff like potions or other in-game drinks to hand out for small change like 5-10k a pop. A lot of RPers like to order drinks and RP eating food as a conversation starter with other patrons or the bar staff. The other big money maker for these places is the date auctions, where bids go above 10M all the time. That money usually goes to the dancer's pocket so maybe that's what they mean, but those only happen every once in a blue moon. Also, in my experience, I would say that the amount of dancers that are true and honest women is a lot closer to 50/50 than you might think. Yeah there were dudes playing as Viera girls with an 12" cock, but there were also real women playing as Raen or Miqo, some even played as dudes! The quailty of writing was also dubious at best. I never hired a dancer myself but seeing the things that these people think of as 'good writing' is enough to make me reconsider what we let pass in middle school English. Some places make you submit a writing sample but even then the bar is very very low.
As far as the billboard design, I think that banner would be fine in a discord announcments channel, but as others have pointed out never anywhere near good enough to be physical media. The tiny black text for the twitch links is my favorite bad decision.

This entire shit show is amazing. It warms my heart that there’s still enough of the player base willing to troll the shit out of cringe inducing ffxiv e-rpers. 10/10
It's one of the only recent events I can think of in which you can actually see a semblance of 'community' existing in MMOs, and already handmaidens are crying and weeping about 'harassment' and that the people dressing up and shooting cannons at the FC house should be 'banned.' Ah, yes, let's go back to the glorious community of modern MMOs, in which no-one talks or communicates, people primarily socialize by grooming each other, and everyone is conditioned to be hypersensitive thanks to intense moderation.

If it's digital, it's not impossible that it's on the cheaper side, looks like: https://www.thepricer.org/billboard-advertising-cost/
However, the idea that a business would refund you for reneging on space you'd already paid for seems pretty dubious at best, and fuels my belief that this is a guy putting everything on a credit card and making minimum payments.

Someone explain? Emoji with fake malware?

PL: Back in my stupid 1337 h4xx0/2 days, I would package up my viral loads as "Celebrity Nude Leaks.JPG.EXE", change the icon to a thumbnail of tits, and it had a stupidly high success rate. That's not what is going on here.

I'll try to dumb this down for normies.
In a lot of formats: PNG, JPG, MP3, others, there is room for metadata. So the file format standard says "Ignore all data until you X, and ignore all data after you see Y".
The malicious code is VBScript. VBscript is a scripting language that isn't compiled - its just a list of plain-text commands that are run by an interpreter (i.e. no interpreter, script is worthless), compared to compiled code that is turned into a standalone executable and (being overly simplistic) is run by the OS itself.
VBscript (more specifically a sublanguage) can be used in MS Office applications to automate tasks, so most Anti-malware apps will scan incoming files for malicious scripting code, the file then gets flagged even though it won't do anything*.

So this guy edited the PNG file and put VBScript exploit code in the non-interpreted area. Windows Defender is flagging it because it sees the code even if it isn't being run.
Its a really immature joke.

Even if the code isn't being executed, you can still use it as an attack vector.
So even though no image program would run the included VBscript, if you get the target file on the computer, all you need to do is get the user to execute something that would

So I get you to download InfectedFile.JPG - it is flagged by your AV as having malicious code but you brush it off becasue its just a PNG. If I can get you download TotallyBenignProgram.exe that contains instructions to go use the VBscript interpreter to run the malicious script earlier in the .png. This program won't trip your AV because it doesn't have any malicious code.

So even though the guy is just being cheeky, its still a big security hole unless he's completely neutered the exploit script.

IIRC there was some electronia guy who had JPGs that if you opened them in Winamp/changed the file extension to MP3 it was one of their songs.

First of all: what the fuck.

Second of all: would you like to take a seat and tell us about the origins of your deep knowledge of ERP practices.

I realize now why I hated the title font and someone on reddit pointed this out, but apparently the summer bash title is fucking spongebob font:

That's fucking extra

This is what happens when your TOS doesnt let you bully faggots out of the game.
They get too comfortable and start shitting up the place, they need a constant reminder of the kind of subhuman they really are.

Yeah, there are affordable options out there, but $160 seems ridiculously low. A 1 week buy for 4 billboards I'd imagine would be $2-4Kish, particularly if some of them were vinyl (and had associated production costs.)

Dude your righteously indignant behavior over a bunch of fags doing funny shit is fucking annoying. I don't know what you do in FFXIV, but I'm fairly certain if you need to self-validate on a forum about laughing at funny people, you're probably worse. Calm down and just laugh at it for what it is.

disguising your own degeneracy by telling people to laugh at something worse.
Too bad vtubing is worse then some tards making a billboard ad for their erp club

They were digital. No production costs, just upload the image to the display.

My biggest problem with the entire billboard is it's so visually busy and illegible from a distance. Usually billboards have a very minimalist approach to graphic design where the subject matter is either the forefront or it's kept in a place where it's not interfering with the text:

It's visually overwhelming from a distance and it would probably look an illegible mess. The text is too small and impossible to read at a quick glance like billboards all have to take into account. The blue on blue background of the main focus of the billboard also causes illegibility because it blends in with the background making it very hard to read from a distance. And the visual characters that are forefront focus are interfering with the text. Basically, there's too much going on and too much text to read and it's distracting which could cause accidents or people having to park just to read it which will never happen.
Who would of thought a bunch of retarded ERPers can't design worth jack?

But seriously guys, thanks for keeping up with this. Gave me a good laugh last night and is a bit of a whitepill for FF14.

Cut them some slack, they designed that banner one handed.

Interesting, but Balmung players should never have been allowed off their server.

Currently at the FC's house rn, im selling icecream while using the snowman mount and im making bank.
Update on the icecream business.
I have increased my price to 20k when creating the shaved ice cream for way less.
People now claim they will like my ice cream as souvenir of this event.

unknown.png

I have somehow gathered a cult following of lalafells who decided that what I did was very cool and they love capitalism.
However my friend is currently rivaling me by using pizza's and baklava to sell to people, I will have to figure out something for this.
I will see if the place is still active tomorrow to sell my iced creams.
Profits were 400K since the new business model.

Careful not to dox yourself in game. If they find out you're a kiwifarm user, they'll pounce and claw at you in game. (No pun intended)
