At the Tokyo Game Show 2024 in September, Koei Tecmo Games announced a new romance simulation in the DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme Venus Vacation series, Venus Vacation PRISM - DEAD OR ALIVE Xtremev - ("VV PRISM)” was announced.
Titled Immersive Love Adventure for PlayStation 5/PlayStation 4/PC, the game is scheduled for release on March 6, 2025. The graphics and gameplay have all been redesigned from DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme Venus Vacation (“DOAXVV”), and it appears to be a new game experience to enjoy.
In this article, we asked Yasunori Sakuta, producer of “DOAXVV” and “VV Prism,” about the contents of this game and how it came to be developed. We hope that fans who are paying attention to this work will check it out until the end.
Sakuta: “DOAXVV” will soon celebrate its 7th anniversary, and at the beginning of the service, there were a total of 10 girls from Misaki and DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 (“DOAX3”). On the other hand, most recently, the new Venus “Meg” was recently added, bringing the total to 31.
In our 7 years of operation, we have added 21 girls, and other than “Leifang” and “Tina,” you basically can't meet any of the added girls unless you play “DOAXVV”. There are a few girls that you can meet at some of the collaborations, though.
I felt that this made it difficult for people to get to know the girls, and with a title that has been running for 7 years, there are some people who are reluctant to start playing now. In reality, it is not that kind of game, but I felt that those who have not played the game might think so, and I wanted to create an opportunity for them to get to know the game.
Up until “DOAX3,” the game had been available on consumer platforms, and some of the people who had played the game at that time said that they didn't want to play a “messy game” like “DOAXVV” ...... or that they didn't have a PC with high specs and wanted to play the game on a Some said, “I don't have a PC with high specs, so I want it to be released on a home video game console. Since we had not been able to provide opportunities for these people to play the game, we wanted to provide an environment in which they could play the game in some way.
--I see. So that's how it happened.
Sakuta: Another thing to tell you is that “DOAXVV” uses a graphics engine based on “DOAX3” as it is a title that has been running for seven years. It is an engine that has been running for quite a long time, about 10 years.
Even after 7 years, “DOAXVV” is still tuned up to draw cute girls, and since we specialize in that area, we are proud to say that we are second to none when it comes to cuteness, but there are limits to the expressions we can draw. However, I also feel that there is a limit to what I can draw. We want to use an engine that can depict graphics at a higher level, and we have also received requests to see such girls. When we put all of these voices together, we decided that it would be best to offer the game in a consumer buy-out format.
--So you were looking at consumer products while you were running “DOAXVV”?
Sakuta: I didn't have a strong desire to release the game on a consumer platform, but I wanted to offer something to those who had not played “DOAXVV”. I was thinking about how I could do that, and over the past year or so, I have come up with a way to do it. In the case of “DOAXVV,” I thought, “Maybe this would make people happy” during the 6th year of operation, so the development of this game began only recently.
--Can you tell us again about the contents of this game?
Sakuta: The genre of this game is “Immersive Love Adventure. There are six girls in the game, and they gradually appear as you progress through the main storyline. You not only communicate with each girl, but there are also episodes in which more than one girl appears, and choices appear in those episodes. Depending on which of the choices you make, the next development, your relationship with the girls, etc. will change, and whether or not your romance with the girls will ultimately be fulfilled? The game is designed for players to enjoy such aspects of the game.
This title is not part of the “DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme (DOAX)” series, but rather the “Venus Vacation” series. The image of the “DOAX” series is that of an island where you go on vacation, visiting different spots and giving swimsuits to the girls, but “this title is completely different. “This film is completely different. In this game, there is a big story, and you read through the episodes one by one, which are connected to each other, and then there are scenes where you can take pictures and play small mini-games.
--there is a big difference in the gameplay, isn't there? There is no element of giving girls swimsuits to wear?
Sakuta: This is not part of the “DOAX” series, so there is no “gift” element. Basically, we want the players to enjoy romance with the girls based on the story, so the girls will appear in coordinating outfits that are tied to the episodes, such as “this is the kind of coordinating outfit for this episode”. As you progress through the game and gradually release the coords, you will be able to change into different coords in the episodes you have cleared. There is no concept of a gift, so there is no need to receive a swimsuit, and there is no need to pull it out of the gacha in this game (laughs).
--I understand that you can enjoy a romantic experience by reading through the episodes, but what are the major differences from the true-color episodes of “DOAXVV”?
Sakuta: This time, each episode basically unfolds from a subjective point of view, that is, from the owner's perspective. In addition, in True Color, you can talk to the girls in full voice. On the other hand, the choices I briefly mentioned earlier appear in the middle of the conversation. True Color episodes are focused on viewing the story associated with the True Color Codes, so there are no choices at all, but this time, there is an element of player intervention, where the player can deepen the interaction by making choices in the episode.
--This time, however, there will be an element of player intervention, where the player will have to make choices in the episode to deepen their interaction with each other.
Mr. Sakuta: There is one more thing. During the episode, the viewpoint is subjective, but you can move the camera by operating the stick. You can look at the girl's legs, for example, while talking with her, or at the ocean. It is an immersive game that makes it easy to feel a sense of reality.
--I thought it would be a “VV”-like game at first, but it has a very different gameplay.
Mr. Sakuta: I had the opportunity to play the game with my collaborator, “Yomu-sensei,” and when he played it, he said he was surprised that it was a more legitimate gal game than he had expected. I want to deliver the same game experience as enjoying a 2D-based romance adventure game, but with the presentation and experience that only a 3D game can offer.
--Is the worldview of this game the same as that of “DOAXVV”?
Sakuta: Yes, it is. We are conscious of the fact that we are reliving the flow that has continued since the service launch of “DOAXVV. For example, in “DOAXVV,” when the owner first starts the game at the time of service-in, he meets Misaki and starts a vacation. Misaki and Honoka are in the same grade, so they quickly became friends and worked together to clear the festival. This is also the reason why “Honoka” is the first girl to become friends with Misaki.
Next, in the first year of “DOAXVV,” when the new Venus was announced, a sexy older sister named “Tamaki” appeared, which made all the owners “wow”. Then, when the owners are starting to get interested in a girl, “Fiona,” who loves the owners, will appear and the owners will be wondering “Which girl should I be friends with ......”. I would like the owner to be worried about “which girl to befriend ” and so on.
I am trying to keep the storyline from being completely different, but at the same time, I am creating a story that complements scenes that have not been depicted in “DOAXVV” before.
--I see, so it is not an IF story.
Sakuta: It is not an IF story. But in the middle of the story, there are stories that are not mentioned in “DOAXVV,” but I didn't know that was the case. I leave it to you to decide whether that is IF or not (laughs).
--How do you feel about the volume of the game in this title?
Mr. Sakuta: It is still under development to rave reviews, so it is difficult to tell you, but this time we would like to present it as a romance adventure game. Of course, we want everyone who is playing “DOAXVV” to enjoy it, but we also hope that people who usually enjoy romance adventure games will play it, and after playing “VV Prism,” they will think, “Let's try ‘DOAXVV’ too! I want people who usually enjoy romance adventure games to enjoy playing “VV Prism”.
We don't want to make the game look less voluminous than other romance adventure games. I hope to make it a work that is worth playing around with, not just clearing one girl, but clearing a variety of girls.
--That sounds promising!
Sakuta: Also, you can take pictures of the girls during the episodes. If you have played “DOAXVV”, you may misunderstand, but in “DOAXVV”, there is an episode in which you can pose for a photo in the middle of the episode, so of course there is that element, but you can also take photos of the girls by selecting the “hold camera” option during conversations or when choosing an option, You can take pictures of the girls.
In addition to this, once you complete the game, a “time stop watch (*1)” is released, which allows you to stop time during an episode and take pictures of the girls even while they are talking to you. The girls move quite a bit during the episode, but if you use the time stop watch when they are in the position you want to capture them in the middle of their movement, you can say, “Stop here and capture them from this angle. You can use the time stop watch when you want to take a picture of a girl in the middle of a movement, so you can stop here and take a picture from this angle.
1: Early release is available as a benefit of the Digital Deluxe Edition.
--How did you decide on the number of girls and why did you narrow it down to six?
Mr. Sakuta: I wanted to create as many girls as possible, but after much consideration, I narrowed it down to six. Looking at the volume of the game as a whole, the more girls we added, the fewer scenes each girl would appear in, and the less dense the game would become.
There were also other questions such as, “There are Misaki and Nanami. Which one do you want to play with this time? In such cases, if there is more than one girl, there will be a choice to be made. If there are multiple girls in the scene, the number of times they appear in the scene will obviously decrease. The choices become too complicated, and it's hard for both the creator and the player to make the game. For these reasons, I thought that 6 girls would be the limit, so I decided on 6 girls.
Mr. Sakuta: The reason we chose the six girls to appear in the game is because we wanted to trace the memories of the early days of “DOAXVV” by having Misaki, Tamaki, and Fiona appear in the game, but we also needed girls who met at different times and involved in different ways to make the story more enjoyable. The first year of the project, we had a girl, “Elise”, who is the owner's mentor, but we thought she would make the story more interesting, so we decided to have her appear. I want players to feel that the game is worth playing.
--We hope that the players will feel that it will be worthwhile to play the game.
Sakuta: When creating this game, I was very conscious of the “girlfriend” aspect of the game. In the case of “DOAXVV,” we have delivered such contents, and we feel that the owners are pleased with them. What made us realize this was that the girl named “Nanami” who appeared in the fourth year of the project was also a hit with our customers.
We had been trying to deliver the charms of each of the previous girls, but we felt that there was a demand for a girl who could make people feel that “maybe she likes me”. So we updated True Color in the same direction of romance. In addition, it was also a catalyst for the creation of the current romance adventure. So, I wanted to bring Nami to a new audience with this work.
--Mr. Sakuta: It was a pretty smooth decision, wasn't it?
Mr. Sakuta: I thought about it and made the decision, but I was really worried about how to choose the right one before I made the decision. I received some opinions within the company, and I even received some serious opinions like “Is my favorite Marie-Rose not here? When we announced this work, we received a variety of opinions, but we chose the six girls out of a desire to include all of them. The opportunity for the other girls to appear will depend on the outcome of this work, but if we are able to make the next work, we hope to be able to bring them to you. In order to do so, we would first like to deliver this work as a work that everyone can enjoy, and we would be happy if you would purchase this work even if your guesses do not appear in it.
--I think it's quite a bold move to have only one Honoka from the original “DEAD OR ALIVE,” as well as Marie-Rose.
Mr. Sakuta: As I mentioned earlier, one of the goals of this project was to provide an opportunity to get to know the girls you can only meet in “DOAXVV,” so we wanted to give some priority to girls who only appear in “DOAXVV. Of course, the girls who appear in “DEAD OR ALIVE” are also Venus, and it's not that we won't feature any of them, but we want to bring them to you like Honoka did this time. It is difficult to make it in a way that will please all users, but we will do our best to do so.
--It seems that you are already looking ahead to the next stage, but do you have any plans to add girls or episodes through DLC?
Sakuta: Basically, we do not plan to add girls through DLC. The reason for this is that, like in “DOAXVV”, you can add girls if you only want to get to know one girl, but in this game, you can choose which girl you want to get to know in this situation, But for this game, we want the players to choose “which girl they would like to get to know better in this situation” and enjoy how the situation is intertwined with the storyline. Adding girls after the fact would be a bit difficult, since we would have to rework the game once again to take into account the combination with other girls, etc. If that were the case, we would have to rework the game again for the next version. If that is the case, I think it would be better to create a new story in the form of the next work.
--I'm sure that would be difficult even if we only add characters.
Sakuta: It is “not impossible” to add episodes. We would like to reflect the feedback we get after the game is actually released. I can't promise that we will be able to do it, but we will take our decision carefully.
--The graphics in this game are much better than in “DEAD OR ALIVE 6”.
Mr. Sakuta: It is difficult to make a clear comparison with “DEAD OR ALIVE 6” because the gameplay and points we want to show are different, but the graphics engine we are using this time is based on the “Katana Engine” that we are researching and developing, and the Katana Engine itself is improving its technical capabilities every year. More than five years have passed since DEAD OR ALIVE 6 was released in March 2019, so it has evolved even further.
This may sound like a weak statement, but “DOAXVV” is a game that is made specifically for the cuteness of the girls, so it's hard to go beyond that with the new graphics engine, and we are still struggling immensely (laughs). (Laughs.) We are doing our best to make everyone think “this is good” as much as possible.
--(Laughs.) When the graphics have evolved so much, did you have any concerns that it would be inferior to the “DOAXVV” game that you are currently running?
Sakuta: Of course, that was one of the first things we thought about. DOAXVV” has been in service for 8 years now, and we would like to continue it for a long time to come. Some people may be worried that the announcement of this game will bring an end to “DOAXVV,” but that is not the case.
The clear difference between “DOAXVV” and this title is that “DOAXVV” is a game where you can change out of your swimsuit and enjoy taking pictures in your favorite poses from your favorite angles, with items such as mist sprayers and fans for shooting, and with things like displacement of the swimsuit when it arrives. It's a game where you can enjoy shooting from any angle you like. On the other hand, this game is episodic, so the game is designed for people to enjoy shooting in episodes, such as “It would be fun to shoot in this kind of situation,” or “It would be cute to shoot girls from this angle. I think the game experience will be different in that people will enjoy taking pictures of the girls from different angles.
The ability to shoot “DOAXVV” in any pose is one of its strengths, but the difficulty level of creating such situations is a bit high. The very best photographers in photo contests create their own situations. So we have prepared a variety of situations for this contest. For example, you can easily take a photo of yourself on a date with Misaki, and I think that makes it easier to play. So I don't think it's inferior to the others, but rather that they are well separated from each other.
--Mr. Sakuta: I was surprised to see the characters moving more than I expected.
Mr. Sakuta: I think you are thinking of the movie scenes in “DOAXVV,” but we have tried to make the characters move in all the scenes as much as possible. Of course, there are some parts where the movement is slightly restrained, but we have tried to create the feeling of being next to each other, not just facing each other, so you can feel a sense of immersion.
--What are some of the points that you would like people to pay attention to?
Mr. Sakuta: We have prepared a lot of places where you can take pictures in a variety of situations, so I would like people to enjoy imagining various things. Also, as I mentioned earlier, there is a collaboration with “Yomu Sensei”. We had a very enjoyable tie-in swimsuit for “DOAXVV,” and now we have a newly designed swimsuit for this title as well, which will be available in the “Digital Deluxe Edition.
We were discussing what kind of costumes “Yomu-sensei” would like to design, and it was decided that what people are looking forward to is “office wear”, so we asked him to design a new office wear.
Another reason why we asked her to help us with “DOAXVV” was not only because of the cuteness of the girls as illustrations, but also because we felt that the illustrations she drew were very situation-oriented, and we thought it would be cute if she showed this kind of expression in this situation. I thought that she is a person who draws illustrations that would be cute if she showed such an expression in this situation.
Therefore, I think that this work is very suitable for the concept of taking pictures with a focus on situations. We have prepared an expanded functionality and an exclusive storyline that will allow the viewer to enjoy this aspect of the game.
--Lastly, could you give a few words to the fans who are looking forward to this new game?
Mr. Sakuta: We launched this new game as an opportunity to make the Venus girls who have loved “DOAXVV” even more loved, and we are still developing it to great acclaim.
We are able to take on these challenges thanks to the owners who have continued to support “DOAXVV”. For those who played the game when it first came out but haven't played it recently, or for those who haven't played the game in a long time but don't really understand why there are so many girls they don't know, this game will allow them to enjoy an experience similar to the moment they first appeared in the game.
Also, even if you have never played “DOAXVV” or the “DEAD OR ALIVE” series, there are girls with a wide variety of attributes for those who enjoy romance adventure games, so I am sure you will find someone you like if you play the game. We hope you will play the game.
We will continue to provide you with more information, so please keep your eyes on us. Thank you very much.
--Thank you very much. I look forward to the completion of “VV Prism.”
