This is a thread for the Fear & Hunger series since there are probably many users who never want to step foot into the dumpster fire that is the official Discord or Reddit just to talk about the game.

For those not familiar with these games, Fear & Hunger is a series created by Miro Haverinen/Orange~. The series takes place in an alternative dark fantasy world, inspired by such works as Berserk, SMT, Silent Hill, Bloodborne and many other movies, music and books. The first prototype of the game was an experimental chose your own adventure until being merged with RPGMaker, creating a genre of horror game slightly hard to pin-down as a particular gameplay style but over all to the simplest answer; a horror survival RPG. The game has depictions of graphic violence and other mature subject matter it's a horror series, and expect spoilers. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

We already had some talk on it in the quirky RPG thread. Some people seemed to enjoy it, but personally it looks like a griefing game with the absence of saves and a lot of instant death coin flips and secrets. There's some cool shit but you need a lot of time and patience to reach it.

The sequel seemed to improve some things and ruin others, with the most notable factoid about it being the passing tranny.

I fucking love funger.
It has been one of the best horror games I had in a long time.
Even got a shirt of the moon from funger 2.
Really cant wait for next update.

I thought it was cool, the setting and atmosphere of the game was really well done, but progression for me was extremely slow and the lack of saves made replaying the game a bit of a chore. Figuring out how to get more saves and putting them behind coin flips as well as having the punishments for failing a coinflip ranging from crippling your run to ending it got grating for me and I got filtered out around what I assume to be early in the game.

I think the concept and a lot of the lore is cool.

The tranny in the second game is funny to me, because from what I remember his mother basically made him be a tranny from birth because she didn't want to give him up to their religious order to be a high priest or something. So like literally indoctrinated to be a tranny.

But I noticed about 6 months after discovering Fear and Hunger that almost every video I saw pop up about it was from someone who was a tranny or very trans adjacent, which has turned me off from it for about a year or two now.

I find the art offputting. That style screams they've drawn some extremely nasty shit beyond what's in the game. The games also seem like video essay bait.

This is the perfect kind of horror. One that makes you uneasy and viscerally disgusted, making you afraid of going ahead and suffer unspeakable horrors the deeper you explore the dungeon/Prehevil.

I'm not sure if the creator has skeletons in their closet and made the games to explicit his sick fantasies, but damn did they work. Any game where "anal bleeding" from being raped by an ogre whose dick is as big as his leg is a legit negative status, where you may literally rape the corpse of a Lovecraftian mutant to get a temporary ally, and where you may or may not need to fuck your buddy in the ass to progress just can't be made by a normal person.

The first game is fine, albeit I'd consider it tryhard gaming, or games that deliberately waste your time – which some people like. The second game is outright designed by Discord committee, where half the characters are based upon or inspired by Discord orbiters. Examples include the literal fucking Sergal based on "Neco the Sergal", the playable tranny, one of the bosses ("Heartless One") is a beta tester, so on and so forth.

I liked the style initially but the Eastern Euro/Nordic misery porn is fucking everywhere and I refuse to interact with it anymore. The guy making it is talented and I wish him the best.
Unfortunately it helped solidify the concept of fans being casual observers of video essays and playthroughs, infinitely so with the sequel's groomed transgender character, so I think he's trapped in the content mines updating Terminus for the rest of his days.
That style
It's primarily imitating Castlevania's gothic art, and the dev is apparently self-taught.

Fear and hunger is lit, need Termina's update to come out. There's a Gro Goroth sigil on my car and a pinecone pig sticker on my laptop. I also have a lucky coin I got off etsy I keep at my desk. Abella is best girl.

I get super autistic about weird horror.

As a game it sux. It basically boils down to running scared from everything until you die and then you repeat the process a hundred times until you beat the game. You need meta knowledge to enjoy the content without wasting your time. TLDR Trial & Error

Big fan. The first game is very harsh to new players, but can be figured out with enough trial and error (and a bit of help from someone who already knows what to do). Once you get to the end game, most of that is taken away and you can roam around mostly with impunity. The thing that I think it gets really, really right is its atmosphere. The dungeon just feels like this oppressive hellscape with horrible monsters lurking around every corner. Mahabre feels incredible and is really the aesthetic peak of the game. Big, big fan.

The second game improves a lot in the gameplay department. It's no longer basically a trial and error game for the first few hours, and so you're given a lot more leeway to roam around and discover things. It is a much bigger game in many ways, and it certainly feels a lot bigger, in both good and bad ways. There's a lot more to discover, and the world feels much bigger than the cramped dungeon, but it is not longer as tight with its aesthetics, and there really isn't anything that reaches the level of Mahabre from the first game.

I think both games really nail the notion of video game storytelling as being interaction with the game world. You learn so much about this world by reading books you pulled from rotting bookshelves and random people you meet. The characters and their stories are much more prominent in the second game, of course, in a (I think) positive development.

But I noticed about 6 months after discovering Fear and Hunger that almost every video I saw pop up about it was from someone who was a tranny or very trans adjacent, which has turned me off from it for about a year or two now.
Can't relate. I don't watch video essays about things that I care about, so I never have to worry what a tranny thinks about the things I enjoy.

First game is flat out awful. As @Stygian Enjoyer put it, the first half of the game is basically all trial & error since you can't rely on saving your progress because, except for two spots, you can't save your progress without literally flipping a coin. That's right, you need RNG to save your game, at least in the 1st half of the game. You'd think, in a better designed game, they would at least take that approach for the 2nd half of the game where the player would likely have a better understanding of the game's mechanics but no.

The second game is far more forgiving than the first in a number of ways though there are a limited amount of saves available to you, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Also, I'd say there's way less trial & error/memorization in this game compared to the previous one.

The creator should try to pitch it as a manga/anime series instead of locking it behind a rng gameplay centered RPG maker game that only attracts autistic trannies really. A lazy way to do survival horror, though it makes sense considering it's made only by one guy. The lore, aesthetics and characters is interesting enough for it to be bigger than what it is.

Some decent fan art

Originally in prototypes for Marina he was a female, then Miro flattened the chest and called it a day. The whole forced to be trans shit in media is all so tiresome and tasteless because it's fetish shit.

There is a reason I avoid video game essays made around anything Souls and Souls-fanmade related (or anything modern) and it's because it's all either troons or tranny chasers.

He's from Finland, I think that explains it all honestly.

I don't think the second game will have as much problems as the first but it looks like some of the new updates if to be believed might be a little less forgiving than before. Rest in peace to the Meat Grinder.

I hate this furry, biggest blight. However the playable tranny character was originally female, I think that was a deliberate choice by Miro to make it a man since he likes Anime, or something.

I think regardless over the over hype it was a very decent series of games made by one man. It's impressive the dedication and creativity that went into it. I'm glad he made it, flaws an all and if it was anything else I don't think it would have had the success it does now. I hope everyone takes a chance to make something even if it's not the best. :optimistic:

Fear and Hunger is a very strange game to me.

I can see the appeal, the game's difficulty is something similar to Noita I would say where the game gets easier the more you know about the mechanics.
The overall bleak and dark tone is something I can get behind as well, I also enjoy that there is basically no level up system per se.

But all the sex stuff honestly turned me off, the deaths where your character is raped or in one case pinned against the wall by a spindly many limbed fuck and just humiliated just veer too close to fetish territory for me. Its not the kind of horror I can really get behind.

Another thing that turns me off is all the essentially stolen ideas and characters? You could say that the creator is very blunt and open about what he is inspired by. Berserk is a very obvious inspiration with basically having 1:1 copies of Guts, Griffith and Casca as playable characters. There's a bunch of Souls series stuff too.
Like another poster pointed out the game has a lot of "theory video bait" with very vague shit all over to be oh so deep.

I like the European setting and I like the concept of New and Old Gods, I think its quite unique but the sex stuff is just too much of a turnoff for me, apparently the second game is slightly better about it? But it has a tranny character so...

Don't really have a conclusion for this post, I was interested in the game, watched plenty of videos about it but something about it just kept me away.

The first game is definitely rough around the edges, but I do think that Termina is pretty much an upgrade in almost every metric. Also you forgot to mention a good amount of Soul Calibur references too, the first game is set in 1590, the same year as SCIV (arguably the most famous SC game) and Miasma is literally just Soul Edge.
